Western Civilization

... which was built (or at least saved and preserved) by the One-and-Only, Holy and Apostolic, Roman Catholic Church.

If you don't have any ideas for Christmas presents yet - here's one...

the most significant steps in its development were driven in Protestant countries

You can only speak of protestant countries since the 16th century. Western Civilisation was already in full swing by then, with formative traditions and influences of Greek and Roman antiquity saved for the world by Catholic monks and great university system also developed by the Catholic Church. Let me quote from the book I mentioned...

"Historians have marveled at the extent to which intellectual debate in those universities was free and unfettered. The exaltation of human reason and its capabilities, a commitment to rigorous and rational debate, a promotion of intellectual inquiry and scholarly exchange-all sponsored by the Church-provided the framework for the Scientific Revolution, which was unique to Western civilization."

... actually, nearly all historians of science in the last 50 years (most notably A.C. Crombie, David Lindberg, Edward Grant, Stanley Jaki, Thomas Goldstein, and J. L. Heilbron) came to the conclusion that the Scientific Revolution was indebted to the Church, and that's only one aspect of RCC's contribution to Western Civilisation and its material culture (e.g. farming, engineering and use of machinery all over Europe by the Cistercian monks).

However, let's not drag the thread off-topic too much - I was merely recommending a great book as a Christmas gift :)

I predict:

1. Victory of the opposition parties.
2. Forming of KO-PSL-P2050 ruling coalition.
3. Considerable amount of butthurt among PiS supporters.

*ekhm*

RC denomination's dominance since its founding in 1054

If you mean the Great Schism, that's when the Eastern Orthodox Church was founded by separating from the Catholic Church.

RCC is not a denomination - it is the Church. Denominations (probably about 20,000 of them but nobody is really able to count them exactly) are characteristic of protestantism - this vague and watered down form of Christianity created after the Reformation (which should more aptly be called Deformation).

No moderation any more

Really? That's a bit worrying.

Nothing but hatred and the same old topics constantly rehashed.

That's bound to happen on a board with limited member base. Maybe if the owner decided to migrate to a more modern and attractive software (vBulletin, XenForo or something similar), advertise and attract more posters, something would change for the better.

You are becoming a specialist on Polish politics, Bobi. I agree with all the above points - PiS is very likely to try all that but that's not the biggest threat to the new government.

The biggest threat to the new government is KO themselves. The reason they lost the elections 8 years ago and paved the way for Kaczynski and PiS is the deeply rooted contempt that they have for ordinary people. Contempt for simple folks, who still go to church, fly the white-and-red flag on 3rd May/11th November, eat their kiełbasa and bigos and aren't overly enthusiastic about sodomites marching on the streets. Normal people.

Even their own man, professor Marcin Matczak, who refused to accept professorial nomination from President Duda accusing him of breaking the Constitution, admits that...

wydarzenia.interia.pl/kraj/news-marcin-matczak-o-dzialaniach-opozycji-pis-szybko-wroci,nId,7200995

KO are their own greatest enemy. Hopefully PSL - their coalition partner - can restrain them a bit.

Meanwhile, Tusk accuses Orban of openly switching to Russian agenda...

polskieradio.pl/395/7785/Artykul/3296958,orb%C3%A1n-openly-switches-to-russian-agenda-donald-tusk-says

... will Polish-Hungarian brotherhood survive Orban? It probably will, seeing as it survived even Hungary's alliance with Hitler, but there are difficult times ahead.

Travel / What are the best countries to live in? [161]

And how does Poland rate with you?

I can't imagine raising my children anywhere else or living abroad permanently. I travelled a lot and lived in Ireland for 3 years but the more countries I visited the more I actually appreciated Poland, with her natural beauty, rich culture, Christian heart, and this elusive something that soothes my soul, when I smell morning air by a Kashubian lake on a rainy summer day, buy a serving of pierogi at a local agricultural fair or attend a Mass with my family.

As Pawian said...

I wouldn`t trade Poland for anything else. My country, my home, my castle etc.

As for the foreign countries I've been to, my best memories are from: Ireland, Italy and Russia. Oh, and of course Czechia is lovely as well, but I don't really consider them foreign. ;)

They're racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic

Yip, sounds exactly like what someone from KO might say about PiS supporters.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1400]

We Brits can eat twice the amount you could ever dream of.

I doubt it.

I can eat smalec by kilograms, drink a litre of vodka to burn it faster and then eat a kilogram of it again. All that preferably at 10 p.m. so that I have nice dreams at night. When I wake up, I take a healthy 100 grams of vodka on an empty stomach and eat kaszanka with some last week's bigos leftovers. Bigos contains cabbage, so I consider it a vegetarian diet.

Beat that, you British lightweight.

You've probably never eaten a whole sheep, have you...

I've eaten a whole wild boar though. Baked in bread dough in a huge bread furnace and then kept warm over a fire. De-li-cious!

But fair enough, perhaps I underestimated British eating powers. :)

one of the nicest things about a whole freshly killed sheep is eating the liver and lungs raw while the rest is being cooked

*smiles with approval*

I must say that I am surprised but also delighted by this newly found respect for our British friends and allies. It might be a good idea to join our inventions and eat raw sheep liver and lungs, generously covered with melted lard with the addition of a week-old bigos and washed down with first-class potato vodka. Long live the Polish-British alliance!

News / Ups and downs of the democratic government 2023-2027 in Poland [342]

They did ???? Incredible

Well, there was a reason why they alienated half of Poland and paved the way to power for Kaczynski and PiS.

Luckily, as you said, they have some reasonable coalition partners these days to control them.

Your analysis would seem to entail a certain measure of oversimplification, to put it mildly. There was more to it than just PO's reluctance to be more leftist and spend some money on social programs. The contempt towards ordinary people is what brought their downfall, and even people from their own camp admit that...

News / Polish PM Tusk- dictator or not? What Poles think? [421]

Let's rejoice indeed. But also let's keep this thread open and watch the developments in Polish politics in the NTE (New Tusk Era). :)

Especially in regards with...

- health
- education
- armed forces
- unemployment and wages
- taxes
- GDP
- infrastructural investments (maybe apart from second-hand wind turbines :D)

Pawian, as a Tusk enthusiast, can list all the new government's successes here. I, on the other hand, will take upon myself the sad duty of listing all the failures.

Should be fun :)

News / Grzegorz Braun extinguishes Hanukkah candles in Polish Parliament [358]

The notorious Konfederacja MP, Grzegorz Braun, used a fire extinguisher today to put down Hanukkah candles in Polish Parliament...

... the incident caused understandable uproar, especially after Braun said: "there can be no place for acts of tribal, wild, talmudic cult on the premises of Sejm", he also added that he was "restoring normality to Sejm by stopping the acts of satanic, racist triumphalism", and he called other members of parliament to a theological debate.

rp.pl/polityka/art39556401-grzegorz-braun-uzyl-w-sejmie-gasnicy-zgasil-swiece-na-menorze-chanukowej

In what other parliament than Polish could this be possible? No wonder Sejm's YT channel is watched by millions of people (yesterday's transmission had 4.1 million views). :)

History / Poland must get back Lwow, Wilno and Brest back [318]

wether I would be a hero of Russia or Poland is of little difference as it would be first step towards a United slavdom that would simultaneously unite the churches!

Moderators - I would like to bring to your attention the fact that Crow has just hacked Gruni's account.

News / Grzegorz Braun extinguishes Hanukkah candles in Polish Parliament [358]

Why should there be Hanukkah candles in the Sejm?

Well, Jewish culture and religion is a part of the Holiest Rzeczpospolita tradition and the Third Rzeczpospolita considers herself a rightful heir of this highest culmination of human civilisation.

is not Poland the Maiden of Christ?

She is indeed. She is also, simultaneously, the Christ of Nations, which to an untrained mind might introduce some difficulties of theological nature.

It is a vomit-inducing place

it gives mere stomach cramps

Yet, gentlemen, you are both still here. And you will be.

I tried to leave, as PF puts too much strain on my weak nerves sometimes, but failed miserably. This place is a trap.

That's why I worry about Crow - he couldn't have left just like that, something must have happened.

News / Grzegorz Braun extinguishes Hanukkah candles in Polish Parliament [358]

What exactly did he mean with that?

Beats me.

He sprayed a bystander trying to stop him in the face...

She wasn't just a bystander but a Jewish doctor, Magdalena Gudzińska-Adamczyk, who tried to stop Braun from desecrating a relgious symbol that is important to her...

onet.pl/informacje/onetwiadomosci/grzegorz-braun-zaatakowal-ja-gasnica-prysnal-mi-w-twarz/2txd99s,79cfc278

... it is so absurd that one is tempted to make a joke or two about it, but at the end of the day it was a lamentable incident and Braun should be punished for his idiocy.
