History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Geographically: A little bit of both along with Northern European and Baltic.

Politically: there is only Western and Eastern. And again I'd say a little of both. Poland was basically the front lines of the Cold War and both the West and Soviets fought for influence in the country.

An older generation of Polonia in North America enjoyed buying all sorts of tat with the word to advertise their Polish pride to others.

A relative of ours from Chicago has that sign.

Halva is popular all over Eastern Europe, Turkey, like yehudi said would be a good guess.

The Balkans are full of foods that originated in the Levant, I'm sure a few have made it to other parts of Central/Eastern Europe.

Becareful when you walk down the Szewska Street. Me and my friend was caught by 2 Russian gilrs, and ended up in a bar called Hard Candy and when we came out our bill was up to 1200 zl for 5-6 Drinks.. If they want more foreigners in Krakow then the Police have to take some action and close bars like this.. I know there are plenty of other bars like this in Krakow.. Now i know not go somewhere i where i get invited from the street...

sounds like the same scam the Russians in Latvia(Riga) run against foreigners. I hope no one used a credit card or bank card in this place.

I was in Czech Republic once and couldnt believe how cheap the beer was. A single man could get himself in trouble in that country..... :)

Yep the most famous BoHunk from my neck of the woods is Joe Namath and his family, notably his father.

My father grew up in "Hunky Alley" in New Brighton, PA and it was a tough little neighborhood. Like most old ethnic hard working neighborhoods, the blacks have taken it over now .

"Bohunk" is an American slang term

I eat really strange things, but I refuse to eat pig head.

Not even the cheek meat? That is the finest meat on the animal.

I've seen fistfights happen over who gets that meat at pig roasts.

Italians make a style bacon out of it. Southern USA does too, Pork Jowl Bacon.

To stay on topic, where I live Head Cheese is still pretty popular with the older folks. Probably will be very hard to find in 25 years.

Oh yeah, I wont eat head cheese either, my grandpa loved it and i'd run when he tried to make me try it. I agree with the jellied thing, it seems to be pretty popular though in Germany, Poland, Russia, etc. I once saw a pork chop that was covered in jelly and had half a hard boiled egg in it. The only type of meat jelly I will consume is stock for soup and obviously that has to be heated up and is no longer jellied. Another thing old timers like that I wont touch is liverwurst...my grandpa would take me out for a burger and he would get his liverwurst and onion sandwich and the smell would throw my stomach for a loop, I usually had to take my burger home.

Yeah the cheek meat is good, and I've been known to eat some brains just to gross all the kids out at pig roasts(party where you roast a pig and drink alcohol basically). I once went to a graduation party some Greek-Americans threw and they roasted a whole lamb or maybe a goat, I liked the way they eat the brain, with lemon and ouzo/raki.

At pig roasts, I will volunteer to help prepare the pig after it is done roasting, that is who usually gets that cheek meat and other goodies.

USA, Canada / Where to buy Polish kielbasa online in the USA? [19]

I really dont know about the wedding sausage. Not sure if I have tried it, my father-in-law(100% Polish) shops there at the actual store, so I figured I would post the link up for anyone looking for some Polish foods in the US. I can tell you the pierogi and pyzy are really good. I've got the Tyrolian sausage also and it is great. The kids liked the hot dogs, we grilled some up this summer at a party.
