Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

Hi I'm living in the Trojmiasto area and was just wondering if anybody knew of any decent place to get British products ?

I know Marks and Spencer has quite a decent range of things at quite good prices, and I know about the WAY OVER-PRICED shop in Galeria Baltycka in Gdansk.

It's not somwthing I'm craving but you know, it's always nice to know :)

Thanks for your response :) I'm not looking for / or in desperate need of anything in particular, just that it would be nice to have a few more things to remind me of home every once and a while.

For anyone interested he are a few British traditional dishes. NOT FISH AND CHIPS lol

thanks :)

Merged: I found back bacon in Poland!

For anyone who's interested, you can buy back bacon (British/Canadian/Danish style bacon) in Tesco. I found it in the Tesco in Chełm, Gdańsk and it's called "Boczek Klasyczny".

There is one problem though, it's paper thin! But has decent flavour to it. Just made myself a Bacon and cheddar cheese french bread baguette...............Drooooool.

Peace out

You can get cheddar cheese here.

Is that the cathedral city one? I like it a lot, I've tried the Irish one they have but I've got to say I didn't like it very much, had a strange smell and was a little wet to the touch......

Biedronka had "seriously strong/mild " cheddar for a while but they seem to have stopped selling it. A bit too salty for me that one. I LOVED THE LIDL ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! so good I was eating it like chocolate. Yeah I saw Tescos own cheddar but wasn't sure whether to chance it or not. How was the taste? How mature ?

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

Just made a lovely Sunday roast with homemade Yorkshire puds, rosemary, thyme and garlic roast potatoes and a big jug of onion gravy! Choice of meat? Roast chicken with garlic and herb butter rubbed under the skin, it came out golden :p For dessert I bought something similar to custard from Ikea called vanilla sauce and a home made shortcrust pastry apple pie. I could have had bigos but ...................................................................... ..........................................

Life / Do Polish people have a good ear for music? [90]

Hi I was just wondering whether or not you think Polish people have a good ear for music? I'm not talking about music school kids who are "trained" but more like the average Joe who just picks up a guitar/any other instrument and teaches him/herself to play/sing etc..........

Life / Do Polish people have a good ear for music? [90]

I ask because I really don't like what I'm hearing on radio and TV here. I don't get it. I have watched many unsigned bands/singers here in trojmiasto who blew me away but it seems that they are never given the chance on a bigger stage. Seems that only mainstream is accepted on radio/TV? A lot of people will come back at me and name a lot of old school Polish bands/singers but that's been done, give me something new. Are there any new, young bands FAMOUS in Poland? It happens all the time in UK and US, there are BANDS everywhere.

WE WAN'T NEW POLISH BANDS ON POLISH RADIO AND TV . THERE'S ONLY SO MUCH DODA/EDYTA GORNIAK/FEEL ONE CAN TAKE.

I do love a great pop record but come on...............

A great band from Gdansk called Trup Trupa SHOULD be on their way to the top but I'm afraid that as it's Poland it won't happen.

I'm not having a go, just asking for your thoughts, for and against :)

a.k.

You listen to wrong radiostations obviously.

There is possibly one or two MAX that are decent. Trojka ( I think that's it ) and sometimes Eska Rock. Not a lot of choice now is it? Could you give me a few worth listening to?

Lets face it, the ear bleeding arse we have to listen to in the UK on "Pop" radio (god im getting old) is hardly the best of British is it?

You're totally right, but we have so many other stations playing great music, and stations dedicated to different genres. I'm afraid this is going to start in to a comparison between UK and Poland which is not what I'm trying to do. I know about the UK, I'm trying to find out about Poland and Polish music :)

In your question.

I think you'll find that my question was asking YOU what YOU thought and not that I assumed something

(Hi I was just wondering whether or not you think Polish people have a good ear for music?)

Technically this thread has nothing to do with Poland so I guess it's bye bye ..........

Funny how there is someone else posting champions league football fixtures/results which also has nothing to do with Poland but nothing is said. Double standards ?

teflcat: As a musician I'd say that Poles sing in tune more than most Brits.

Seriously? Interesting.

I'm a musician too BTW

I'm also a musician, and just going by the singers ( if you can call them that ) on that program ( VOP ) I'd have to strongly disagree "that Poles sing in tune more than most Brits". But what do I know.................

Life / Automobiles vs. Pedestrians in Poland [77]

It's shocking here isn't it!

Drivers in Poland both love the rules but at the same time don't obey the rules. They will happily knock you over if they have the right of the road and love I mean LOVE letting other drivers know when they're breaking the rules but have no problem breaking the rules themselves.

I could give endless examples and if asked I will.

I'd love to hear anyone defend the drivers in this country. I've heard there are worse countries for driving in Europe but Poland has to be in the top 5.

I particularly like the highly developed custom of flashing warnings that traffic cops are near.

Yeah I love that too :) A bit of solidarity to other rule breakers

Food / Origin of the pierogi [118]

Oh but they can be baked. It's a different kind of dough though, made with yeast.

The baked pierogi (with yeast ) is basically like a British Pasty. Oh how I miss pasty shops........... beats a zapiekanka any day ;)

Life / Are Polish roads really this bad? [237]

sorry but I have to agree with DriveSafe!! anyone defending Polish drivers are either Polish or idiots! I sometimes wonder how they passed their tests in the first place. Don't agree that its the lack of enforcement's fault too. what, because there are no police knocking around you can drive like a total f ing pr**k?! I feel so strongly about it as I have to walk /drive these streets with my daughter. the other day a car drives up to us does a handbrake turn then drives in the opposite direction. This is one of very many situations ive encountered. Also have to agree with poor DIM lighting. Street signs ARE a joke. Too many, Ive seen upto 7 signs on one post in places. Soon there will be sign posts warning you that in 20m there will be a sign.

UK, Ireland / Why are Polish people, especially women, so disrespectful toward the English? [437]

Can't say that in the 5 years I've been here any woman has been disrespectful to me in anyway . Apart from the wife/mother-in-law/zus women/woman in biedronka/

I've only had a few isolated incidents with Polish guys shouting "KUR*A ANGLI" as they walk past because they can hear me speaking English.

I'm offended that she didn't actually physically BASH the bible.
In England when you call someone a bible basher it means they are very religious. The irony lol

One of my students told me that here in Poland you can get an on the spot fine for causing offence :- calling someone fat/ugly/ calling Jesus a raving homosexual in the street........ any truth to this?

(Just a quick edit there before the lovable grammar police go in for the kill, and when I say lovable I mean I'd absolutely love to volley them in the plumbs) >:o

Well I assume it would be insulting to Catholics callings Jesus a homosexual, that was my point, not calling someone a homo but calling Jesus one.

yeah they twist and change religion to suit themselves. If there was such a person as Jesus and he was actually the son of God I'd love to know how different the actual events and RULES were/are. Religious people annoy me, no, people who preach annoy me. THEY OFFEND ME lol
