Life / Feeling ashamed of my Polish heritage. [237]

Tymoteusz
Very well said.
I live in America, but I was born in South America, after my grandparents struggled a lot to find a safe place for my parents. If it wasn't for the war, and other calamities of destiny we wouldn't be discussing this here.

I don't speak a word of polish yet, (although I'm learning). And I have never been in poland before. But with God as my witness I'm so proud to be of polish descendant!!

The collective spirit of the poles and their believes are the first reasons why I'm so proud of my last name.
I wish I could move to Poland one day and return the family blood to its original place.

UK, Ireland / Polish immigrants in the UK - victims or criminals?! [243]

This happens everywhere.
I think that all immigrants in all countries will sooner or later feel uncomfortable with the treatment they receive in their new home.
For example, I live in the U.S. and being latino is a problem here.
Indeed, there are a few bad apples, but because of those few bad apples, then all latinos are the focus of a new Anti-immigration wave. Like "hate" agains all hispanic regardless their nationality.

Specially if you live in Texas, where all the red-necks show their xenophobia and their ignorance on everything they do.

You see, when the native habitants of a country have a false sense of superiority, then, this is how they act. By attacking immigrants from inferior countries (Inferior, according to them).

For example, americans think they own the world, therefore, they demand that all undocumented immigrants be deported and kicked out of the U.S. However, they don't understand that emigrating to the US by legal means is next to impossible. Nonetheless, they want to close the borders and seal it off, so that no one would come and steal their land. They forget that this is a nation that was made and forged by immigrants.

In the U.K. something similar is going on. They believe that the U.K is superior to other countries and therefore, their collective ego dictates that they should reject other countries and its citizens.

A newspaper showing some news where a pole is committing a crime is just an excuse to fuel their hate.

The hate starts with the very reporter who writes the news. The nationality of the criminal doesn't really matter. There are criminals in every country. But the fact that they want to state the nationality of a criminal is what shows you that, to them. It matters.

It's called ignorance, insecurity and low self stem. You should just ignore them and live your live with your head up.

yes but mostly legal ones and it is possible to immigrate to usa lagally.. most of the people here got here legally, ok?

Back in those days... Even Bin Laden would've been able to come to the U.S. legally. There was no immigration enforcement. Ok?

not really.. no issues here

Yeah right!

Life / Smoking vs. Grilling on Balconies / High Rises in Poland [66]

I agree with all the first replies.
Being concerned about your neighbors is a good think and I'm sure you are appreciated among them.
But smoke from a grill shouldn't bother anyone. (Unless they are broke and hungry). But if Poland is a free country, then, I'm sure poles would be a opened to watching one of its neighbors have some fun grilling a nice and juicy T-bone.

Just make sure you don't burn the place down....

I understand now. I was thinking that you needed a streaming service, but it turns out that you need a DVD rental place. Unfortunately I'm not in great and beautiful Poland yet and won't be able to recommend one.

But I'm sure you will be able to find a decent movie rental company out there.
Good Luck!

Life / Internet access and cost in Krakow! Please help. [20]

3G internet has a limit here in the U.S. (and anywhere for that matter).
2 GB per month for 25$ using AT&T.
But home Internet is virtually unlimited in almost all countries. I would imagine it is the same in Poland. unless you are using the old and pre-historic dial-up connection.

Life / My experience in Poland 15 years ago as an American trying to live and work there. [167]

I think he was just high and felt he wanted to write about what he felt at the time, but for some reason, I liked reading it.

The thing is... There is a little bit of him in everyone of us. Specially if you are trying to fit in in some distant land.

I wish his experience was a pleasant one, but it sounds like he was bored of the "Back-then-Poland" and who can blame him.

P.S.: He shouldn't have laugh about the woman who felt down the bus. That was the only thing I didn't like about his "memoir". Even a soul-less person would feel bad.
