Life / Things that annoy you in Poland. [133]

Yet the Polish state seems happy to allow it to continue - when they could cut the death rate dramatically by putting unmarked police cars out there with cameras. A few instant-bans handed out for dangerous driving (let's say - 7 days in the first instance) would soon change driving habits.

I am of the same opinion

well I have to apologise you for the mistake I have made
I don't know why it somehow stuck to my mind that the number of car accidents victims is over 10000 - I don't follow such things closely - so I though I am making an educated guess - seems like it was not well educated

In 2006 the figure was lower than 6000 so I guess it is not much different now
I had some doubts about the 10 000 figure that's why I checked it out
Anyway I was absolutely sure that the figure is still like a town vanishing

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

for being able to spend a whole day in a forest wether biking or hiking (I actually live in a forest ;) )
some people mention here and in other threads that Polish people are down-to-earth - I really like that - but it is changing especially in the cities where life is more media-influenced and more westernised - this goes down to the fact my generations weren't raised on commercial broadcast and there were no media hypes of any kind - I get a feeling todays youths are shaped by the media hype and commercial broadcast

as far as I can remember I had hard time trying to buy some carrot juices or mixed carrot juices in England - and the only pure fruit juice I can remember were orange juice and apple juice - orange juice was very good, never bought apple juice in England as I rarely buy any apple juice (save for the tymbark apples and mint bottled juice)

the variety is most important word here

- abundance of varieties of juices and waters

yes - this is what Britain is surprisingly short of (fruit juices - can't drink stuff like Powerade or Lucozade on daily basis)
you can find huge variety of fruit juices in Poland

History / Polish military in 1939 in pictures. [107]

Do tell us more.

there were a couple of Polish pilots who joined the USAAF and fought around Pacific. Did that happen after the end of war in Europe or sooner I can't remember. I'll try to do some search on that.

Witold Urbanowicz, joined Flying Tigers in China to fight the Japanese and had two confirmed air victories there (and a couple of others claimed)

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

Also, what other languages might Poles be likely to speak

older generations often do speak some German (it was the language of science back in the interbellum) seems however these generations are soon to pass

all children were taught Russian since the 50's up until 1989 (so was I) and some people know it fairly well (I can say my ability to speak Russian is moderate but I guess I can understand much more)

knowledge of French is really limited in Poland

As you say that most German forces had advanced between 40km and 60km into Poland, you must therefore agree that the German forces had not been held at the border. If they'd been held at the border, they wouldn't have even advanced 4 to 6km!

well, true enough

Krasnobród. I was there last month.

I actually have no knowledge of that skirmish (including when and where) - but if it's true what OziDan says (that it happenned within a couple of days from the start of the war) it couldn't have been Krasnobród because it's deep into Poland (well - was then) in Lublin area - if there was some cavalry battle around Krasnobród I bet it happenned no earlier than 10th or perhaps even 12th of September

23 września 1939 miała tu miejsce szarża 25 Pułku Ułanów Wielkopolskich podpułkownika Stachlewskiego

this is from Wikipedia entry on Krasnobród
aaa
Guderian troops weren't there (his troops operated further north)

Language / Polish words difficult to translate into English [66]

As in: "Coorvah, I woke up, coorvah, took a shower, coorvah, had a cup of coffee, coorvah, drove to work, coorvah, then came back, coorvah, had some dinner, coorvah, watched a game, coorvah, an went to bed, coorvah."

I think the best way to translate "coorvah" is: "comma".

yeah, that was my theory once upon a time ;)

upbringing" or rearing as in rearing of children

- this is not exact match translation (at least rearing definitely isn't)

one difficult word to translate is życzliwość - no nearly exact match transaltion in English

does umpteen really mean more than 10 and less than 20 ? I had an impression it means some not certain figure but not a very big one (not several at the same time) - well my impression could just prove wrong

News / Do Poles in Poland really feel betrayed because there won't be any US Shield? [288]

Of course they do, they would be silly not to. You hold onto all your cards just in case.

you are mixing approaches like hell, man - are you democratic minded or empire minded - there are plenty of people like you around I notice - many of them really admire Russia

quote=MarcinD]
And anyway, as messed up as it may sound Poland's role as "the bullied" living in between Russia/Germany has now been taken by the Lativa's, Lithuania's and of course Georgia ect.
- just for the moment - btw Poland may be viewed by Germany as their field of influence - co-opted by Russians -

Poland is much in the Russia's way to have Ukraine, and other former republic back in their sphere of influence that is way Russia needs to be able to pressure Poland - see current difficulties with long term gas trading agreement and the determination to build the Nord Stream thing - Europe just needs Russian gas - that's ok - but Russians do demand conditions: it should not run through Polish soil - and what does Europe - conforms - we can hardly count on solidarity from Germany, France or Italy

You don't really believe they will nuke Poland any time soon, don't you?

so what was the threats of those Iskanders at the Polish border for??? to show a goodwill? - I just don't see any offensive measures Poland or America take against Russia for quite some time now

or maybe you think the shield was a threat to Russia - any evidence??

yes it was a threat to Russia's imperial ambitions - nothing else

are imperial ambitions essential to the Russian nation survival - guess not

...Tbilisi, Georgia - Tens of thousands of Georgians protested peacefully in front of the country's Parliament Thursday to demand the resignation of Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili. ...

yeah I think he should go - only I fear Russian agents will again rule the country - it was not very beneficial to the country before - see the Roses Revolution - well Russians can have it different way now perhaps - will see

News / Do Poles in Poland really feel betrayed because there won't be any US Shield? [288]

I haven't heard many Poles who wanted this shield anyway. They want some peacefulness after 70 years of tensions.

peace can have its price - wonder if those Poles are ready to pay that price - that poeple don't understand what is going around them is no news simply

It was entering foreign territory in order to restore public order and security. The UN does it all the time, albeit not effectively in most cases.

oh man - it was just a useful pretext - don't you think Russians had no chance to antagonize Georgians and Ossetians in the first place?? who did provide weapons for Ossetians to rise against Georgian state in the early 90's - Martians?? who did back them up? I firmly believed Russians deliberately fuelled the conflict. was Caucasus a void before Georgia become independent (if only nominally for some time because being run by Russian agents - see Shevardnadze)

Russia abandons plans to deploy missiles near Poland

it does not really matter - they have some of their strategic nuclear weapons aimed at some Polish locations for sure - an empty gesture

News / Do Poles in Poland really feel betrayed because there won't be any US Shield? [288]

they did invade Georgia - they did destroy plenty of infrastructure there including parts of Tbilisi airstrip - what is this if not an invasion? they were in the Sukhumi port to destroy its facilities, including the times of when they were supposed to leave - they were as near as some 40 km from Tbilisi - Putin has great deal against Georgia being independant from Russia and a corridor to tranport crude or gas from Caspian fields -

if you compare America in Iraq and Russians in Georgia it's pretty much unjustified - Americans are there for the will of the Iraqi government - at the moment the withdrawal (though perhaps not so much as before) would mean chaos and perhaps civil war in Iraq - it was irresponsible to invade Iraq - but it would be equally irresponsible to leave it now just like that

then you've got Russians in Georgia (some couple of weeks occupation to allow destroying of infrastracture and looting by Ossetian militias)

international humanitarian commisions were never allowed into Ossetia with the claims by the Russians that the Georgians purposedly killed some 1000 of Ossetians - maybe it was true - but we will never for sure know cause Russians never allowed international observers in

I am not making a hero of Saakashvili - perhaps it is even justified to call him a war criminal - but so is Putin - violence is not the way to go - and actually Georgians should have let the Ossetians alone - Russia did not act to defend Ossetians but to destroy as much of Georgian potential as possible - not least in order to give the example to other post soviet countries in the area (Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan)

Russians are going to territories that strive for independence only where it suits them (it is their vital interest to destabilise Georgia so as to remain in the monopolist position of a gas provider to Europe (even if it is transit gas from Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan)

the same way you can say that Putin has nothing against Poland - he just doesn't like Poland to get in his way of building imperial Russia based on gas provider monopoly - that's why he needs to have ways of go round Poland with his pipelines so that Poland can be effectively blackmailed energetically into subservience

by the way the shield would be no counter-measure against Russian nuclear strategic forces - because of the nature of the shield - look for the technicalities to see why - Russians then threateden with deploying some rockets next to Polish border - it's just using a pretext - what Russia would lose in case of strict American-Polish cooperation is the potential to blackmail Poland into subservience and I believe it is one of their major politcal goals for the near future - though they need to deal with Ukraine first of course (next couple of years can see dramatic changes in the Ukraine)

BB - is South Ossetia part of Russia??? WTF were Russians doing on a territory of some other's state? Normaleweise one could state that Russians were an occupying force on its neighbour soil ? Don't you agree? If Polish troops were stationing in Hoyerswerda what would you think of that?

what I believe Russians new pretty early of what Georgians are up to - they were well prepared to counter them within some 16 hours (and I talk of land troops)

what they did is exactly what Americans did with the Pearl Harbour

News / Do Poles in Poland really feel betrayed because there won't be any US Shield? [288]

it doesn't matter PP - America simply butchered much of sympathy toward it here I think these days - and every Polish politician in charge will from now on be very careful with dealing with America - disillusionedness disenchantment etc

the lie of the Georgian War of Aug 2008.

sorry - what lie - did Georgia attack Russia? did not Russians invade Georgia? did they not target Georgian infrastructure? did they not destroy the port of Sukhumi?

what I believe Sean is that Russians could easily avoid Georgian attack on Ossetia - it was however in their interest to have a pretext to cruch Georgians - as an example to others as well (say Azerbaijan) - as a postcommunist country Georgia is sort of riddled with KGB spies (there are no ex-KGB spies for the most part)

quote=Seanus]I see Putin agreeing to come to Poland and enter talks.
again what talks??? about the Pilava strait shipping to Elbląg - this is so minor I can't find less of an issue in Polish-Russian relations

and God forbid, I am not a Russia's Katyń basher - in my view it is irrelevant to current issues

again - one can always enter talks without any intention of finding reasonable compromise - this does not mean a thing - just looks nice

I see Putin backing off Poland after the missile shield deal fell through.

I think you should inform yourself better sometimes Sean, you should read some Polish commentators more often - I personally advise you Rafał A. Ziemkiewicz in Rzeczpospolita online issue or interia.pl portal

Gumishu, Kaczyński didn't help with his inflammatory rhetoric time after time. The man lives in the past. I'm not saying that Tusk should now accept an olive branch but tone it down a little.

I basically don't agree with you - that Kaczyńskis live in the past - with all of their flaws this is not true - btw what kind of olive branch do you mean - do you see any from Russia???

and I don't really get what you mean by imflamatory rhetoric - calling things their name should be imflamatory in your eyes?

Maybe the US have just come to their senses and realised a missile shield in Poland is pretty much obselete when it comes to defending the US from Russian missiles.

the shield was never meant to be a defence against Russian missiles - for thechnical reasons - but you simply need to know these things to be able to judge

I think if America opened itself for Poles to work there now - as several European countries already did there would not be much fuss about it - cause destinations will be split - I don't actually understand what they fear for - or maybe it is not as good an idea now in the times of crisis

News / Do Poles in Poland really feel betrayed because there won't be any US Shield? [288]

In the rest of the article they say they can only give the amount of deported Poles, without the relation to Polish populace in USA, this basically means that you deny Visas based on pure prejudice.

this is just basic knowlegde that Poles do overstay - My uncle stayed some 4 years in NY after having travelled there on a tourist visa (or rather family invitation but it's quite irrelevant)

They were playing on sentiments which Kaczyński aroused and which have been inculcated into many Poles, that Russia needs to be paid back.

I some how do not see any validity to what you state here - what do you mean paid back - Russia is playing aggressive towards Poland (if you don't know that I'd say you don't know enough) - Germany is playing along with Russia (allying itself with Russia) - Poles see little to no support from the EU (mainly because of countries like Germany, France and Italy) (or NATO) in our dealings with Russia - it is pretty obvious these countries follow their egoistic agendas - so fearing increasing pressure from Russia (pressure on Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Latvia, Lithuania is indirect pressure on Poland) Poland seeks some ally - America seemed to be a good candidate - but political realities change - I think America has lost much credibility around here backing off from the shield, unless it has some other ideas how to be present militarily in Central Europe and the shield was dropped for technicalities and/or financial issues - in short Poland does not have enough trust for Europe to defend its interest (or defend it militarily) against Russia - the situation here starts to resemble the one in 1939

Levandovski - I'm betting that you're Jewish. "Levan" = "Levin" ?; and "Levin" is derived from "Levi".

knock on your forehaed little bear :)

Lewandowski is most propably from a place name (say Lewanda/Lewandy which in turn comes from 'lawenda' (lavender) (being a corrupted form but these were quite common in folk speech)

you should consider Portnoy name origins as in Phillip Roth :P

News / Do Poles in Poland really feel betrayed because there won't be any US Shield? [288]

I am absolutely for American military presence in Poland and I was absolutely for the shield - now I don't think America is any reliable partner for Poland in foreseeable future - and the visa question is irrelevant here - America seems now to be ready to sacrifice Central Europe for God know what's sake - war in Afghanistan?? Russia's cooperation to deter Iran from developing nukes? War in Afghanistan is already lost - it was completetly unnecessary in the first place - the Afghans don't seem to desire what we were supposed to give them. Iran - Iran is in no shape of building nukes in a couple of next years. (exagerating threats seems to be what American intelligence were doing in case of Iraq - Iran maybe not much different - just seems there are people there who want to stir as much as possible) - defending Israel from Iran - why should America attack Iran do defend Israel? - to antagonise muslims even more???

Russia is potentially the biggest threat - with it's economy based on faint foundations - with its active antagonising policies toward nations formerly in the Eastern block (not all nations) - what's it gonna be if Russian economy fails and the government seeks to turn away the nations attention by initiating a military confilict with say Ukraine or Estonia - that they probe the west attitudes is clear for me in Georgian conflict
