Life / Expats in small towns in Poland? [7]

Do you think small towns in Poland have better future than in Germany

They're growing in facilities etc and perhaps they will have a better future. There is still a lack of infrastructure like good train services and planning laws are weak with horrible stuccoed bungalows built on the edges of towns which just grow and grow like boring suburbs and often built individually by the owner which usually looks worse, however once that's eventually sorted, I'd say yes, they can be a very nice place to live and are improving.

Iran is not that bad when it comes to women

In terms of rights, it's in the bottom 10% of countries worldwide.

Some restrictions of what you migjhs wear in public are meed in Europe too.

Why?

though in the US pork chops are not usually pounded

Ours are always on the bone with a lot of fat and are fried or grilled. A lot less popular than they used to be and I'm not sure why. In PL I'd not translate it (but almost never speak a word of English there unless it's with someone from abroad who's lived there for years and doesn't need translations).

convenient than cows or sheep that either need land to graze on or preserved silage or roughage

Yes, that and the fact that marginal land (think Wuthering Heights or the valley in the photo in Random Chat) is only really suitable for sheep and a small farmer there wouldn't have had much to feed many pigs or chickens with.

Pork schnitzel?

Yes. Perhaps "breaded pork schnitzel".

cows and sheep were killed for meat less often since cows give milk and you get wool from sheep, so you need them alive, while pigs couldn't be used for anything else than meat

I'd guess the same. That and topography, since different land is suitable for different things. Poland has always had plenty of chicken and pork since both suit the type of land and rural economy well.

I suppose it's memories and fond times. I'm never really happy with the word chop as a translation of kotlet. Pork steaks is a bit better but not perfect, and you can say schnitzel in English. It's comfort food, and the first thing I eat when I come back to PL.

In the U.K., they have a tradition of doing a large joint of meat on Sundays, with the meat appearing in different forms (like pies) later in the week. Because a leg or other cut of pork (always but always with apple sauce) was always cheaper than lamb or beef, it was traditionally less favoured.

We used to have gammon joints sometimes, a sort of brined pork that's a reddish colour.

A person who hasn't had either of those all their life is likely to not like them

Plus they've had it dinned into them in religious lessons that it's bad in various ways, as strongly as Mormons are told that coffee is bad and as strongly as evangelical Protestants are told that praying before religious statues is bad.

I remember the first time I had lamb... I kind of wanted to spit it out because of the aftertaste

When I first arrived in PL years ago (and was missing lamb, a staple meat where I come from and entirely normal, whereas pork is seen as the poorest and least favoured choice for a Sunday dinner).

I went to dinner with a friend of a friend. Hardly unsophisticated since he worked at the Warsaw office of the BBC. He'd been to Greece on holiday and had cooked Moussaka. The first thing he said, even before his guests had taken their shoes off was: "it's lamb, but don't worry, I've cooked it for so long that you won't taste anything at all".

jack., so everyone else must live to your way of life.

Who said that?

This is a discussion forum where people give opinions, make suggestions, answer questions

. You're free to agree, disagree or say something between those, just as others are free to disagree with you.

You must be a real snowflake if you can't handle people disagreeing with you.

what about when you want to leave the city?

Get a train.

Or do a big shop?

Order it or get an Uber. Or get some exercise by walking.

We almost never use ours and I'd be happier without it. Especially since the public transport is excellent, driving standards in PL are extremely poor and because parking can be a hassle.

in Warsaw

In the Powiaty which include a lot of villages and smaller towns.

In the city nobody needs one unless they live in an out of the way suburb, far from metro, rail or tram.

@Ron2
Are you suggesting that healthcare was free there before President Obama? Or that there isn't a significant section of the population there who favour the same sort of universal healthcare that developed countries have.

a Nobel price for "her fight against the oppression of women in Iran."

Are you suggesting that the oppression of women in Iran is a frivolous thing? She sounds a pretty strong person of she's a public figure fighting that.

the US that has a crucial vote on who gets the price

That's simply untrue and hard to know why you made it up.

The Nobel Peace Prize is Norwegian and nothing to do with America. None of the Nobel Committee that deal with that prize are from outside Scandinavia.

socialism

Communism. It's best not to mix up two different things.

the Oscars and the Nobel Prize that prove that these rewards are 100% politicised / fake

The first are prestigious and the second are highly prestigious.

It's good that "beauty contests" are dying out though.

poor

What you actually mean is that the Conservative Party wasted all the tax revenue by giving crazy tax breaks to their supporters in the Home Countoes and spent nothing on infrastructure.

Economically, the country's in a far better place than France and Germany and the currency is strong.

Food / What's more popular in Poland beer or vodka? [59]

political islam

Qutbism and Deoband? No. A bit but not entirely. It isn't a modern word; in fact it's very general and means any sort of soft covering.

The discussions about modest clothing have been around since the days of the Prophet. Cultural conservatives from Pakistan etc can say and do what they like. A certain amount of basic modesty (not that much) is recommended for both men and women however the Hadithi vary and leave a lot to choice. Unfortunately inadequate and reactionary men across the world are always paranoid that someone better will steal 'their' women.

but again... some carry it to ridiculously weird lengths

Unfortunately, people in societies where alcohol is uncommon (regardless of that society's religion) aren't used to holding their booze and often behave like teenagers in an Amsterdam coffee shop, going for the strongest stuff they can find which they can't handle.

and hijab is also for males? never

Hijab just means a soft cover. It can be a chair cover or over a milk jug or a tarpaulin the back of a lorry.

About Muslims and alcohol, it really does depend on who you listen to. Many drink (all the Quran says about alcohol (and drugs) is that you shouldn't pray while intoxicated) and although alcohol is often seen as slightly less respectable than hashish, plenty of people in the Arab world do like a drink.

according to you?

According to me?????

Looks like you forgot about adultery, theft, bearing false witness and a few other things that are haram like not attending Mass on ob days.

Did you think that the word "haram" only relates to food items? Perhaps you also think that the word "hijab" is only about female outerwear.

4000zl net which I'm not sure is enough to live off

It's about the median wage in Warsaw in total, out of which people pay for accommodation, bills etc. After expenses, you won't be rich but you won't be poor either.

Not sure if you have a car, but you may not need it to save on the costs.

In Warsaw, nobody needs one since the public transport is excellent. I agree with you, the OP should go for it.

Feedback / Who deserves to inherit Polish Forums? [344]

I'm not sure if it's a problem with the forum or with my phone or what... 🤔 Has anyone else experienced it?

Yes, though only recently and not only here.

I use an apple phone and it's the same. I suspect it's to do with mobile phone software not really having much to do nowadays with the type of software forums use.

I don't know how many people use mobile, but I would hazard a guess that it may be the majority.

Among regular posters (most of whom are far from Generation Z or even Milennials) I'd guess no.

Some posters tend to make short posts (Lenka, Amiga500, etc) which suggests a phone however most probably don't.

alcohol is haram

Not necessarily. It depends on your own interpretation and which "fiqh" you follow.

And of course there are many things that are haram for Polish Catholics however millions of them still do those things.
