History / What should Russia and Poland do to become if not friends, then at least not enemies? [945]

Various russophiles and supporters of russia: But mafketis! Your unwavering and extreme russophobia is neither rational nor productive, it might even make some people take russia's side....

russia: You know what? We need to revive a nazi slogan.... unironically!

News / Poles say a big YES to our European Union [996]

Europe could easily absorb a few million refugees per year

So... you think that if Europe buckles down and just starts treating migrants well.... that will stop the flow?

Do you have any remote idea how many people live in Africa and how many want out?

Germany's disastrous energy policies are crippling industry and you want to bring in how many people who will always be dependent upon welfare/petty crime?

subsidiary protection which makes up most of the asylum applications and is also enshrined in European law

Time to change European law.... as it's clearly not fit for purpose.

the practical obstacles are nearly unsolvable

Only to people who don't want a solution.

How many millions of people with no chance of contributing to the economy can Germany afford? 10? 20?

Work / How can I found job for Hebrew speakers in Poland? [46]

Were you not listening to the priest?

Not really I was kind of just outside the door waiting for it to end... but it may have been around a holiday (the church was very packed) and it was another person (paying attention) by the door that briskly shook my hand before I could do anything about it (beyond muttering something intelligent like... 'okay...')

As a non-believer when I attend mass as a guest I generally keep my head level with the rest of the people. I stand up when they do (but don't cross myself or say anything) and I sit when they do (and don't kneel I just remain sitting).

I follow the same basic rule when I've been in churches in Malta (where I don't understand anything the priest is saying).

Deciding if one qualifies or not is a big problem

It's not really.... asylum has very specific criteria which almost none of the arrivals come close to fulfilling and it doesn't take long to figure that out. Asylum is provided to those fleeing 'individualized' persecution from a government (to start with).

Establish processing centers in Africa and make it clear any found at see will be returned to Africa.

Very doable and would be supported by a solid majority in every European country but either there's no political will or the EU (those in charge of it) want to the flow to continue for their own reasons....

What should be done, still sticking to democratic solutions???

The EU needs to stop the flow which is almost entirely filled with people who do not qualify for asylum and who are not refugees.

This is a strong majority position in (almost?) all EU countries.

most people shook hands

I was once in a country church near Sandomierz (where people were singing spontaneously before the service began) and it was just head nods....

in Silesia

German influence?

don't shake hands, well in Warsaw anyway. Maybe it's different in other parts of Poland

I've been to masses in different parts of Poland (for various reasons, I'm not a Catholic or even Christian) and the norm is nodding with maybe a (very) faint smile. If one person offers their hand others will take it but it's not common.

The first time I was in a Catholic church in the US (I'd gone to meet a person after the mass and arrived while it was still going on) a perfect stranger turned to me to shake hands and said 'peace be with you' (or something similar) and I had noooo idea what was going on.....

rather drink their own urine than criticize their "democratically elected legal representatives"

Is that really worse than "word rather die in a senseless foreign war than protest against the Tsar!"

neither of them speaks Latin on a daily basis.

IINM Latin is the official language of the Vatican and they do produce and do some things in Latin.... (like the official announcement Habemus papam) though the daily working language is unsurprisingly... Italian.

"Fauda" is very popular, apparently, for example.

I was interested but the version I found the dialogue in Arabic wasn't translated...

There was an interesting sci fiction series (forget the name something about the earth shaking) kind of similar to Fringe that had a lot more of daily israeli life.

Shows about orthodox jews in Israel are a genre now... Shtisel is supposedt to be good but I don't know how much is Hebrew and how much is in Yiddish...

Is it a living language or a dead one like Latin.

There's more than one Hebrew...

Simplifying a bit....

Biblical Hebrew is used in various Jewish religious contexts but not spoken freely on a daily basis and has no native speakers that I know of.

Israeli Hebrew is the language of the modern state of Israel. The idea of reviving Hebrew as an everyday lingua franca for Jews comes from the late 19th century.

The result while highly successful as a language is often not much like earlier versions of the language. The most semitic parts of the language are no longer productive and large parts of the language are basically relexified Yiddish (yiddish constructions with Hebrew words).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Hebrew

I thought they spoke Yiddish?

In the modern world the biggest concentration of Yiddish speakers is in NE America (the greater NYC area). Some conservative Jews in Israel continued to use it as much as possible as they thought Hebrew was too sacred to use to buy tomatoes in the market (as it were) though I think that has weakened in recent years.

Try to find Israeli tv shows with subtitles on netflix (or similar).

My favorite so far was Losing Alice, which starts out a bit like All About Eve but then goes in very different directions....

Anyone wanna discuss the 'black' character in Alternatywy 4? That was pretty cringe.... (as was the basketball interlude toward the end of Miś my least favorite part of the movie though IIRC they at least got a real black person)

That's certainly one take on racism

If tasteful darkening makeup to pay homage to a performer is bad, then what is a biological man putting on a dress and calling himself a woman?

Womanhood is not a costume and I find Eddie Izzard, for example, far more offensive than the Polish singer (who never claimed to be black).

a bit of caution about how whites depict them

Agreed and my considered judgement is that there's nothing wrong with the performance in question in Poland.... (unaddressed raceplay fetishes in the UK and US might make it problematic there).

It's very weird and infantile to expect people in foreign countries with very different histories to care about localized trauma.... I'm reminded of an article about VOA in the 1970s when the policy was that the programs should be the same in every edition with the result (among lots of other absurdities) that Latin Americans and Eastern Europeans were subjected to lots of stories about Northern Ireland, which they didn't care about at all...

wasn't smeared with white makeup though, was she.

Actually she did use makeup to lighten her skin tone when singing white characters (subtley....she didn't slather it on with a trawl or anything) and this is obvious when comparing concert or off-stage vs performance picture (or comparing pictures of her singing Tosca or Dalila).

The Polish performer in question wasn't doing minstrel show stuff or anything (and how embarrassing that that lasted into the 1970s in the UK! it was dead in the US by the 1950s).

In general it looked okay, that's not my kind of tv show but it was an homage and not ridicule.... (though raceplay fetishists will disagree).

Blackface?

Dont' play dumb, it doesn't become you.

African Americans specifically have had an amazing and creative musical tradition

So a show about popular music isn't supposed to acknowledge that?

white people pretending to be black. It has a bad backstory

Do tell....

Either choose a white singer to impersonate or get a black

What a dreary reality the woke live in.... everybody stay in a tiny, tiny, tiny box...

Or impersonate white singers.

And totally neglect one of the most creative musical legacies in popular culture history? Isn't _that_ kind of...... racis?

An Afghan American on twitter (since banned) pointed out that racialized wokeness is all about unacknowledged raceplay fetishes.... the more unaddressed the fetish the more unhinged the person becomes about racial issues....

explain your capitalization rules?

Neither the countries (russia and belarusia) nor most individuals from them deserve capitalization....

I do captialize Kamil Galeev and Denis Zakharov so some are worthy.

Fat chance of that in London.

That doesn't sound.... good. Give me a big city where you can find peace and quite and leafy areas over a paved over hellscape of urban shade.

Belorussian girl

The correct term is belarusian (even the belarusian russian-language station in my cable line up before the war called itself belarus' (in cyrillic of course)

I have no idea about the political convictions (if any) of the player in question but when you play for a pariah state... you need to be prepared to be treated like a pariah.

I think they should have used a flag, but it should be the real Belarusian flag (white-red-white) rather than the soviet abomination that lukashenka revived....

"knock yourself out" is never used in the English language in the way it's presented in that Urban Dictionary?

Without looking at Urban dictionary (valuable at times though there's some very weird stuff there)....

"knock yourself out" means 'go for it' (śmiało?) but also has a second part that isn't spoken, the second part of the meaning is "I think it's a dumb idea" and/or "leave me out of it"

My proposition for a Polish swear word

real word to be retooled for swearing: cążki (Uciekł mi autobus.... cążki!)

second choice: halama, name but it sounds vaguely ominous... (Mogę dwpaść? Lepiej nie... halama u mnie)

I thought of a made-up word.... lutra

Słyszałeś? Magda ma nowego chłopaka

To czwarty w tym roku... co za lutra!

But apparently it already exists....

What about piedziele / ja pierdzielę?

Where does it slot in?
