Travel / What is the weather like in Poland where you are now? [211]

They say that it is extremely difficult to make reliable forecasts longer than 3 days.

It seems not only 3 days are too difficult. Even the day forecast can be unreliable.

I wrote:

No showers at all, it was a scorcher all day. We went on a trip 20 km out of Krakow and took umbrellas, in vain.

Now I am looking at the forecast service, they withdrew the former graph and replaced it with a more optimistic one. No rains today afternoon! :):):::):)

complete sh1te..........................

hmm, I think we still need to give it more tests.

but the sun is coming back for the last hour or so........(Lublin)

That is what the service says: clouds and sun in the morning, clear sky later on. Sunday - nice morning, rains later on.

23 degrees and balmy :) :)

And a little cloudy?:

Most forecast services online are too general or unreliable.

However, it seems I found a good one. I tested it a few times and it really works. E..g, yesterday in Krakow it was hot and sunny in the morning but the service predicted rains in the afternoon, so, instead of going to the lake for a picnic, we went to the park. And it started raining, indeed, at midday. The same with our trip to Wrocław last week- the first day was great so we went to the zoo, on the second we did some sightseeing in the city first and then went to the Aqua Park to avoid getting wet by heavy rain. :):):)

The service is a bit complicated: you have to find your city/town/village in the voivodship:

meteoprog.pl/pl/catalog/Poland

After you locate your area, you get forecast for 5 days, divided into 3 times of day plus night, which is quite useful.

meteoprog.pl/pl/weather/Krakow

Clicking Pogoda na 6-10 dni, or Prognoza długoterminowa in the bar above the first map, you can get long-term forecast.

So, let`s test how reliable it is. Where are you now?

In Krakow it is hot and sunny, but showers are expected in the afternoon, with a nice evening later on.
Sunday 10th - the same.
On Monday 11th - nice morning and rainy afternoon and evening. +17...+19°C +17...+26°C +22...+27°C +19...+23°C

In Wrocław it is warm and sunny and no rains today, only clouds in the evening.
Sunday - the same but showers in the afternoon.
Monday - rains throughout the whole day, temperature +17...+19°C +18...+21°C +20...+24°C +15...+23°C

meteoprog.pl/pl/weather/Wroclaw

In Warsaw - did it rain at night today?
Saturday 9th will be hot and sunny with a spotless sky.
Sunday 10th - still hot, with a sunny morning but rains later on.
Monday - rainy morning and afternoon, with clear evening. Temp: warm: +16...+18°C +17...+24°C +22...+24°C +18...+23°C

meteoprog.pl/pl/weather/Warszawa

Gdańsk:
Saturday 9th - warm and sunny all day. +14...+16°C +15...+22°C +21...+23°C +15...+22°C
Sunday 10th - still warm but rains till evening. +15...+16°C +15...+23°C +19...+23°C +16...+20°C
Moday 11th - clouds in the morning, rainy afternoon and clear evening. +14...+17°C +14...+17°C +16...+20°C +12...+20°C

etc etc

You can write about the weather in your place.

Language / Why is the Polish language so difficult? [309]

Anyway, I am driving myself crazy with this Polish language. It is going to be the death of me.

Someone wise, in another thread, said: The Polish language is a nightmare at the beginning, but gradually becomes easy to learn. English is the opposite.

after you finished college, how did you stay legal?

I stayed legally for a month or so and the rest of my stay was illegal. :):):) I worked hard and after a year I came back to Poland and bought my own apartment in Krakow at the age of 24. :):):)

History / Polish visas granted after 1989 [14]

1. Had you already been accepted to study at an American university when you applied for your visa?

Yes, my mother who was staying in US at the time had arranged all formalities and I had the nesessary papers to present to the clerk. That is why I got the F-1 student visa.

2. How much time did the visa grant you?
I don`t remember well but I could stay as long as my college education required. In case of leaving the college, the visa time expired after a month or two.

May I ask two more questions, and then I won't bother you! :-)

You don`t bother me. It is a pleasure to answer your questions. :):):)

Thanks for your reply. Was your experience easy and do you remember how long it took to receive the visa? Thank you again!

It wasn`t easy because I had been turned down a year before, when I was applying for a tourist visa. After a consulate clerk looked through my index book and saw grades which weren`t too good, :):):) he probably thought I was planning to stay in US for a longer time to improve my bad English.

The second time was more successful because my grades were much better!

The waiting time was short - people learnt about their visas on the day of the appointment.

History / Polish visas granted after 1989 [14]

In spring 1990, as a uni student, I applied for a student visa at the American Consulate in Krakow. I received it and went to US to study at a college in New York.

I don`t know what the application process for an American visa looks like currently. But I think it is more or less the same it was 20 years ago.

There's a very palatable new Polish porter called Belfast.

Hey, man are you crazy ? What is your problem ? What's wrong with Warschau ?

Nothing. It is a nice city and for the comfort of tourists, many important facilities are described in foreign languages:

But, when I saw the roads I got it what they meant :D All roads were under construction. Driving from Kraków to Warschau was one of the worst memory in my life.

There was war in Poland. Don`t you know about it?

I hardly believe it. Each red-haired woman I know wears makeup. Why should yours differ?

Hey, when I say so, it must be true. What is wrong with you?

She sometimes brays like a donkey. I don't know if that's a sign to me or.... :)

If it sounds like a female donkey, it is OK. Stop worrying.

Mine wants to boil her broad beans soft, while I prefer al dente. So I always have to take out my share from the pot while hers continues to boil. Funny.

Work / The level of English of Polish teachers of English. What do you think of it? [101]

the level of English of Polish teachers of English. What do you think of it?

Aluzju poniał.

Here you are.

My English is terrible and I am perfectly aware of it. My greatest deficiency is idiomatic and colloquial expressions, as well as collocations. I need to frequently look them up.

However, I am good at vocabulary - whenever students inquire me about new words, I don`t need to use a dictionary to satisfy their curiosity (they love playing such games with me, btw). Also my spelling is OK. Grammar, too, I suppose.

Fortunately, Polish teachers of English work with textbooks in class. A good textbook and a clever teacher (despite certain deficiencies) are still able to provide a quality course for students.

One sad observation of mine. I noticed my English has been getting progressively worse over the years. When I peruse the posts which I made on various forums a few years ago, I am amazed at the complexity and richness of the language I used then. As if another person had written them. I can`t believe it was really me.

Now it is all gone - I am aging. :(:(:( Is it home-made wine which I gulp every day in large quantities?

please for god's sake, pay attention to the forum you choose when creating a new topic. cleaning up after people is no fun.

Do you mean you don`t enjoy Clean Day campaigns?

Strange. My students love it.

caught her having sex with her husband in their bedroom. Why is that?

You are asking strange questions. I am not sure what to answer.

Probably:

1. They had sex because the TV was out of order.

2. They used the bedroom because the bathroom was still uncleaned.

3. The husband because the wife was absent.

???

I really don`t know.

Your wife pawian will remain beautiful for very long time, not destroying her face with make-up.

Exactly, Antek. I can see other women in her age who have obsessively put on make-up since 15. And they all look 5-8 years older. It is incredible how make-up damages the skin. And how women are unaware of it.

History / Poland: Her heroes and her traitors [239]

I saw some websites that tried to soften Bogusław Radziwiłł's image somehow. I suspect that his own "Autobiografia" has a lot to offer, even though he tries to show himself there in the best possible light. For your convenience I translated few paragraphs below.

Wow, did they already call it Autobiography then? Diary was more popular, I suppose.

Great you dug it up. Thanks for taking the effort to translate.

Another lie by you Pawian (you're quoting text with intent here) both Bogusław and Radziwill defended polish interests in multiple wars and battles.

Only when it suited them. They betrayed the Commonwealth when it suited them, too.

Love / What strange/unnerving/funny things do your Polish wives do? [153]

Dear guys, after reading your answers, I can say that Polish wives differ substantially and any stereotypes based on nationality are out of question.

they will take something from the fridge , smell it , and then pass it to anyone else nearby for them to smell also...

Mine doesn`t.

Needless to say, she ate half of it.

Mine doesn`t. A few days ago I had delicatessen like fish eggs and red wine and she didn`t want to try them.

Another thing? Well, she always lets the toilet paper run down to zero.

Mine doesn`t.

Mine hides stuff.

Mine doesn`t.

Conversely, mine is obsessed with with having mountains of the stuff in the toilet. We can run out of Milk (like this morning for example) so no milk for my coffee but i have about 60 toilet rolls stacked up in my toilet so the pupa is well catered for.

Not mine.

..when we first started living together I thought "No-one can spend that long stood in the shower......surely??"

Not mine.I think my wife is quite unusual about make-up. She doesn`t use any facial stuff. Only deodorants and perfume. And I like it a lot. I prefer seeing her natural. Her freckles and red hair are enough to make her pretty.

She could look beautiful if made-up. She once tried it, in 1990s, it was my birthday and she made me a present and looked gorgeous, like a model. But I didn`t approve of it because I was so concentrated on natural looks. Since then she never used face make-up.

I think it is great.

History / Poland: Her heroes and her traitors [239]

What about Bogusław Radziwiłł? Was he anything like Sienkiewicz's portrayal of him in The Deluge? With a super effeminate powdered head attached to a herculean body his incongrousness made him the quintessential Baroque villian in my opinion.

Yes, a good example:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogus%C5%82aw_Radziwi%C5%82%C5%82
Together with his cousin Janusz Radziwiłł in 1654 during The Deluge, or Swedish invasion of Poland, Bogusław Radziwiłł began negotiations with King Charles X Gustav of Sweden aimed at breaking the Commonwealth and the Polish-Lithuanian union. They signed a treaty according to which the Swedish-Lithuanian union was founded and the Radziwiłłs were to rule over two duchies carved up from the lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (this was also confirmed in another treaty, the treaty of Radnot).

History / Poland: Her heroes and her traitors [239]

If you spent five seconds to think Pawian, you would be more entitled to saying "Teaching history is my vocation!"

If you spent about 60 seconds to think (I am giving you more time because I don`t know your mental powers yet, but judging but this post, they are not too high. :):):):):) , you wouldn`t draw too hasty conclusions, dear Antek.

EPIC FAIL

Don`t be silly. I didn`t make any epic fail.

Did you really read what Warszawski wrote?:

In the original thread:
warszawski wrote:
Bzibzioh: Pałac w Wilanowie (Wilanów Palace)
The palace they will not give back to the rightful owners...

If you did your googling during your 60 seconds, you would know that the last righful owner of Wilanów Palace was Ksawery Branicki, the greatgrandson of one of the greatest Polish traitors, Franciszek Ksawery Branicki:

Count Franciszek Ksawery Branicki (1730, Barwałd Górny - 1819) was a Polish nobleman of the Korczak coat of arms, magnate and one of the leaders of the Targowica Confederation. Opponent of the reforms of the Great Sejm (1788-1792), supporter of the Targowica Confederation. Sentenced to death in absentia by the Supreme Criminal Court during the Kościuszko Uprising (1794).

So, when I answered Warszawski,

Quite right so. Those facking noblemen once betrayed Poland to Russia and today they deserve nothing but a kick in the butt!

I had the right to do it.

Here is the list of greatest Targowica traitors:

Stanisław Szczęsny Potocki: Marshal (head) of the Confederation. Sentenced to death, but never apprehended. Instead, on September 29, 1794, his portrait was hanged (see illustration). In 1795 he was rewarded by Catherine the Great with the Russian Order of Alexander Nevsky and the rank of Général en chef.

Other magnate members:

Franciszek Ksawery Branicki: Sentenced to death during the Kościuszko Uprising but never apprehended. Emigrated to Russia, died at Biała Cerkiew, 1819.
Szymon Marcin Kossakowski: Hanged April 25, 1794, in Vilnius during the Kościuszko Uprising.
Józef Kazimierz Kossakowski: Bishop. Hanged May 9, 1794, in Vilna during the Kościuszko Uprising.
Ignacy Jakub Massalski: Bishop. Hanged June 28, 1794, in Warsaw during the Kościuszko Uprising.
Seweryn Rzewuski.Sentenced to death in absentia by the Supreme Criminal Court during the Kościuszko Uprising (1794).

Where is the art, Pawian and who is the rightful owner?

Let me repeat: the last owner came from Branicki family. Members of this family once participated in destroying Poland. Kick in the butt!!!

Cannot you see where Pawian did his failure? ;-)))))))))))))

No, I can`t. But I can see your pathetic and futile attempts. :):):) Cheap!

Pawian has gone from historian to incompetent propagandist, in a single post, good to have you onboard Antek.

Good to have you on board, Warszawski and Antek. I just love teaching history to flaming ignorants and prove them wrong! :):):):):):)

Pawian, nature has a natural way of healing wounds...

I hope it will also work for you. :):):)

Today we can call them for traitors. But if we gonna see it from their perspective we will have to try to understand why they did it.

I am sorry but it is relativism which I cannot accept. Besides, if some of the traitors were actually hanged during Kosciuszko Insurection, it means their contemporaries judged them very negatively.

pawian:
Instead, on September 29, 1794, his portrait was hanged.
That is.......so.......polish! :)
Gotta love you guys! :):):)

Certainly, death penalty in effigy isn`t a Polish invention:
