News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

Another day brings another splendid example of nepotism and corruption from within PiS.

This time, it concerns the supervisory board of PGE.

Janina Goss, who borrowed Jaroslaw Kaczynski 200 thousand. zł, is now a member of the supervisory board of the largest energy company - PGE

Her qualifications to sit on the supervisory board are minimal, as...

This will be her first contact with a large energy company. Janina Goss has spent over 20 years working for the Cooperative Grocers "Społem" as a legal advisor.

wyborcza.biz/biznes/1,147744,19702614,przyjaciolka-domu-kaczynskich-weszla-do-rady-nadzorczej-pge.html?disableRedirects=true#ixzz41fPgvpq2

The level of blatant nepotism is unbelievable here.

Meanwhile, ordinary Poles have seen the price of their shopping rise by over 4% this year alone. They certainly aren't benefiting from positions on the supervisory board of large companies!

History / Cars made in Poland - during communist and post-communist times [23]

The cinckiarz profession I think was technically illegal but kind of accepted by authorities.

It wasn't accepted by them, it was controlled by them. Anyone operating a clearly illegal money exchanging business would have been shut down within seconds if they weren't SB men - it was a good way to monitor the flow of cash, and if someone was seen to be exchanging large amounts, then they were instantly suspicious.

How can a car be called 'Polish' if the most important part was not engineered in Poland?

That's not really relevant, because even Mercedes are using Renault engines these days for some cars. Engines have become such highly specialised things that it's just not possible for niche manufacturers to make their own. Aston Martin are using Mercedes engines too, I believe.

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

Latest news :

Poland is under intensifying pressure to reverse course on what critics see as government overreach following last year's parliamentary election, with a commission of the Council of Europe saying Monday it will look into new legislation that regulates police surveillance of correspondence.

wsj.com/articles/poland-faces-increasing-pressure-over-controversial-changes-1456751710

The Council of Europe is who the Venice Commission belongs to. This pretty much ensures that the EU will follow their lead, leaving PiS pretty much isolated.

Still my favourite political banner of all time.

Funny how PiS are so desperate to use power against the opposition, isn't it?

Pack your things Delph, you are living on the first train tomorrow ;)

Poor goofy. He's absolutely desperate to use instruments of repression against the political opposition, just like in the old Communist days.

Poor Duda-cat, doesn't he like his feelings being offended?

Delphi defender of the downtrodden white collar criminals. What a surprise.

Which criminals? I thought you were supposed to be anti-Communist Ironside, so calling someone a criminal before they've been convicted in a fair trial is...well...

Could you explain to the members why PiS made that cat Duda pardon the criminal Kamiński, but then went after members of the opposition?

you mean fighting crime that was completely covered up during the 8 years of the PO-PSL ?

What crime? We all know that this is just the usual Communist harassment by PiS of the political opposition.

You're blinded by hatred, but if you genuinely knew your history, you'd know that Communist parties in Europe used such agencies to routinely abuse, harass and insult the opposition. We now see the same in 2016 in Russia and Poland.

News / The dossier of TW "Bolek" - Poland's IPN assisted by police enters the home of the late general Kiszczak [306]

Interview with Bishop Pieronek

tokfm.pl/Tokfm/1,103454,19696444,bp-pieronek-o-teczkach-bolka-nachalne-oskarzenie-obrzucanie.html#MTstream

I can speak, but personally, not as a church. I am a trained lawyer and I am sensitive to the fact that the law should be preserved always and everywhere. Lech Walesa was tried and acquitted, it is a legal act and you have to stick to it.

He goes on to explain that if new materials have come to light, then Wałęsa should have the ability to review them before they were released to the public. He also then makes it clear that people throwing stones at Wałęsa now should be looking at their own conscience.

The silence of the Church on this issue is quite remarkable. Wałęsa is a known and devout Catholic who practices what he preaches (even if it gets him into trouble) - and many of the people throwing stones are people known to have only discovered the Church in 1989 or later. Some of them are ex-PZPR members that openly carried out the will of the Communist regime - yet they've got the nerve to abuse and insult Wałęsa today.

The harassment of the opposition continues in Poland.

thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/242603,Anticorruption-police-search-former-ministers-house

It's pretty clear that members of the opposition should now take great care to protect themselves against the authorities, as the CBA has returned to their 2005-2007 role in abusing and harassing opposition members. We can expect further assaults on the opposition to follow. PiS are hell bent on returning to the days of the 6am knock on the door by the secret police.

Polonius, it's all in the Vienna Commission report. It couldn't be clearer - PiS have threatened democracy and the rule of law with their actions.

No amount of crude PZPR-style propaganda attacking the opposition will change that. It's quite remarkable that this government seems to be spending more time attacking the opposition than anything else.

The triple combination of the attacks on Wałęsa, the KOD march yesterday and the opinion of the Vienna Commission will do nothing but erode confidence further in this government. Good.

All PiS have to do is to respect the ruling of the Constitutional Tribunal. It's very easy, and every day that PiS don't do it is a day spent pushing Poland further towards Russia.

Then again, I suspect it's entirely the plan. PiS = PZPRbis, and with it comes close ties to Russia at the expense of European relations.

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

The draft report by the Venice Commission has been published in full :

static.presspublica.pl/red/rp/pdf/kraj/komisjawenecka.pdf

The most important conclusion is here.

However, as long as the situation of constitutional crisis related to the Constitutional Tribunal remains unsettled [...], not only is the rule of law in danger, but so is democracy and human rights.

The report contains considerable criticism of the government's arguments, particularly the way that PiS have attempted to portray judges as being political and belonging to political camps. Furthermore, it expresses alarm over the way that the government has been making defamatory statements about judges on the Constitutional Tribunal.

If PiS refuse to accept the opinion of the Venice Commission, then the pressure can only increase from the EU. Stopping agricultural payments should do the trick.

Just to provide an English language news source about the Venice Commission's opinion:

politico.eu/article/poland-kaczynski-szydlo-tribunal-constitution-crisis/

"I want a return to normalcy. There is an attack on the rule of law in Poland," said Beata, a Warsaw translator. "I see the attack on the Constitutional Tribunal as an attack on the state."

Putin must be loving every second of this. PiS are tearing Poland apart, and with it, leaving behind a weak, debt-ridden corrupt mess that will fall victim easily to Russian imperialism.

In further proof of PiS moving heavily away from Washington and heading towards Moscow, here is an excellent editorial by the Boston Herald.

We don't care that documents seized from the files of a dead apparatchik appear to prove that Lech Walesa worked for Poland's secret police. Walesa remains a hero.

bostonherald.com/opinion/editorials/2016/02/editorial_lech_walesa_a_hero_still

PiS (or more accurately, Kaczyński) seem to have completely forgotten that any attempt to smear Wałęsa internationally is going to result in everyone thinking that the Polish government is a complete joke. The Americans in particular regard him as being a symbol of the free world - and the irony of the PZPR-riddled PiS going after Wałęsa won't be lost on them.

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

I love Poland now, when the worst party ever is gone, when their freakish supporters go out on the street to whine, it's the moment when I enjoy visiting my homeland the most.

It's times like these that we wonder why you're staying away if you're so content with the political situation.

One can only assume that "love of the homeland" comes a distinct second to "selling out one's soul for cash".

It would strengthen it, as it would be clear to everyone that if you want EU money, you play by their rules. It would certainly change minds on Brexit, as the UK is a huge supporter of money being used sensibly instead of propping up tinpot regimes.

they can kiss our ass.we have Szydlo as prime minister not some swedish puff...yeaaaaaaaa bring it on

Hahahaha. You don't get it, do you? The government is openly relying on the EU providing Poland with half a trillion złoty in funding. If that funding gets cut off, the PiS government falls within weeks.

it will work..have some faith

It won't work. Germany, Italy and others are already furious, and post-Brexit referendum, Cameron will have no use for Poland.

More to the point, countries such as the Czech Republic and Slovakia stand to gain bigtime by Poland losing out, hence they have no reason to support Poland.

Even better, just spotted this on the Prime Minister's twitter feed - twitter.com/PremierRP

The opinion of the Venice Commission is not binding.

Given that the European Union has strongly indicated that the Venice Commission's report will influence the actions in Brussels, it's safe to say that Szydło is heading straight into open conflict with the EU. Starting a fight rarely works if you're holding your hand out for cash at the same time.

But that's not all.

We need to talk about changes in the pension system. To lower the retirement age will not solve the problem.

HAHAHAHA. What happened to the promise to lower the retirement age in the first 100 days, Pani BS?

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

Well, well, well. Another great example of the "good, change" comes from the Venice Commission, which appears to have been rather more critical than PiS would have liked.

The Constitutional Court has been blocked, which violates the fundamental values of democracy. The government can not block the judgments of the Constitutional Tribunal" - said in a very critical draft opinion of the Venice Commission to the changes made by PiS.

wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/1,114871,19688822,trybunal-konstytucyjny-zostal-zablokowany-gazeta-wyborcza.html

It should be remembered that it was PiS that invited the Venice Commission to come to Poland, and that the EU has also made it clear that they will rely on the judgement of the Venice Commission before proceeding.

There's a great English language link here : thenews.pl/1/10/Artykul/242508,Venice-Commission-warns-that-democracy-in-Poland-at-peril-in-draft-opinion

The draft report said that "as long as the situation of constitutional crisis related to the Constitutional Tribunal remains unsettled and as long as the Constitutional Tribunal cannot carry out its work, not only is the rule of law in danger, but so is democracy and human rights."

I agree with you, but Poland ceased to be a country adhering to the rule of law after Duda refused to swear in the new TK judges despite being ordered to do so. From that moment on, it became the rule of Party.

Indeed, an honest citizen should support and cooperate with the police in whatever way is needed.

So you completely support the actions of the last government, then?

As for getting rid of 'scam artists', why was someone under investigation for corruption appointed to lead the police?

Ordinary citizens should be very afraid only if their doing something illegal and have something on their conscience.

A wonderful piece of doublespeak there. Who decides what might be illegal? Why, the prosecutor. Who controls the prosecutors? The Minister of Justice. Therefore, ordinary citizens should be very afraid of any action that allows the government to subject them to any sort of interrogation they want, provided physical violence and murder isn't involved.

Crime-fighting is a top PiS priortiy, and more power to them.

Hahaha. They couldn't care less about crime, as witnessed by the way that they appointed a new police chief that was already under investigation for corruption.

What they do care about is making sure that political enemies are destroyed.

correction"every criminal should be very afraid"

You think it's acceptable to subject people to everything short of physical violence?

Good luck. Hope it doesn't happen to your family.
