History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

And its based on ancient roman city layout, roman not holy roman empire.

Sokrates is right about this you are wrong Pawain and it is you who are being the troll here by starting this ridiculous thread that is only meant to provoke. The Germans called their empire "Holy Roman" because they knew where they'd gotten their knowledge for civic building from: Rome, not some blasted mud-hut tribal German precedent.

History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

good Germans helped Poles to get baptised although bad Germans tried to prevent it.

Pawain you provide this superficial account of the German role in Poland's Christianization and you accuse other posters in this thread of being simpletons! Look in the mirror.

History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

Pavilec, Poland should've received even more "treasures" from the Germans. Germany started the war and enslaved and murdered millions of Poles. Your harping on Silesian artifacts and the lack of Polish "emotional connection" to them is laughably petty. Do you have any self respect as a Czech, and if so how do you reconcile it with your apologetics for the legacy of the brutal German oppressors of your people, or are you just a craven Polonophobic Nazi jackboot licker?

History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

The very notion of Poles "owing" anything to Germans because a German carved an alterpiece and some Polish cities were organized around a "German" legal model is ridiculous. The sculptor was paid for his service and the Romans taught the Germans about civic organization.

Jonah, if you are an English teacher then there is a school out there employing you that has made a serious mistake. Look at all the mistakes that follow your vocational claim.

Law / Getting Married in Poland without a visa? [23]

Midas, how does your rant about illegal immigrants receiving social welfare services answer the OP's question, which asks if she can marry sans visa?

Food / What exactly is Polish Bread? [90]

For Easter my grandmother bakes bread in a two piece copper lamb-shaped mold. Is this a widespread custom in Poland today?

Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

They don't - it's only Polish Americans that have problems with it.

You are wrong Delphiandomine. Other Americans have a problem with it too because the word "Polack" in America is an ethnic slur and polite genteel people wince when they hear it from the mouths of the low-brow morons that still use it. There are even shameful people that still use it on this forum when referring to Polish-Americans, people such as yourself.

History / 'Battle of Britain' won thanks to Polish aces !! [158]

It is true that Hitler regarded Britain as a fellow Germanic Empire that he wasn't particularly interested in making war upon, but I doubt that if the Nazis had won, and all the Roma and Jews were dead, and all the Slavs were slaves, that the British would be content with life under totalitarianism.

News / What Polish diaspora need and expect from Poland, from Poles in Poland? [43]

F-Stop diaspora literally means dispersal of seeds. I will grant it is a bit phallocentric, but it is still an apt word to describe Polonia. Did you know that after the USA the largest group of Polonia in any country is in Brazil? Just imagine how many cool, laid-back, samba dancing Polonians we never hear from here because this is an English language forum rather than a Portugese one.

History / Kashubians are nation in Poland? [124]

Did alot of Kashubs emigrate to Canada? I was reading a study of national vampire legends and the Polish ones documented were gotten from elderly Kashubian-Canadians living in a community somewhere in the Great White North.

Genealogy / Polish looks? [1410]

An overly pointy chin is aesthetically unappealing. Just look at the American actress Reese Witherspork. One wonders if she is going to puncture either side of a tin can's top with her chin and pour out its content.

Please, discuss POLISH looks.

O.K. Wroclaw so it is merely the flat back of the head that you believe distinguishes Polish head shape.

Genealogy / Polish looks? [1410]

like i said, it's all been said before and can be found in the threads.

I asked you to describe the distinctive Polish head shape you claimed exists in post #937. Do you really expect me to read 31 pages of this thread and to somehow know which description of the distinctive Polish head-shape is the one you ascribe to? Do you provide this description in a post made under you name in this thread?

So Wroclaw you cannot fully describe this distinctive Polish head shape you posit? Does its distinction consist soley in a "flat back"?

Life / New Polish generation prefers black culture? [145]

Which culture?
Hip Hop, Thug or "Black?"

If you would read the entire thread you would see that some weeks ago I made it clear that in my opinion it is surely hip-hop that is the black culture that Polish youth prefer, but that being said hip-hop has thuggish expressions and I am sure that some Polish youth find them to their taste. Honestly who hasn't fantasized about brutally dispatching one's enemies and gaining wealth by nefarious methods? Thuggish hip-hop has its charms.

Life / New Polish generation prefers black culture? [145]

Foriegner and Lyzko both of you are stereotyping the black culture that Polish youth prefer as being angry and unindividualistic. Surely youthful hi-hop has angry expressions as is to be expected from any youthful art, regardless of the color of its orignators, but hip hop is far from promoting conformism. To the contrary hip-hop in music, as well as in other artistic outlets, encourages its practitioners to develope their own distinct styles. Lyzko do you really believe neither Langston Hughes nor Paul Robeson ever expressed rage in their books and songs? If so I suggest you revisit their work and be disabused of your misapprehension.

It is Russian women that more often have flat round faces, as a general in Dostoevsky's The Idiot remarked. Polish women tend to be more dolychocephallic.

USA, Canada / Polka Parade Television Show [43]

Beckski, what I have written regarding banda music being a form of polka is true, and upon further investigation it appears that it was actually Polish and German immigration into the Mexican state of Sinaloa, where banda originated, that explains how this Mexican polka music came to be, instead of the explanation I gave above. The following is from the Wikipedia article on banda:

Most Banda music is very clearly a dialect of polka and will seem familiar and appealing to fans of polka or traditional German and Polish music.

Banda is among the the most popular genres of music on the radio in California and thus the polka music is indeed thriving in our golden state and elsewhere in America.

History / Kashubians are nation in Poland? [124]

So what is he then? A German-born person of Slavic ancestry who identifies SOLELY with both his German mother tongue and the land of his upbringing!

Gunter Grass has a German father and a Kashubian mother. His wikipedia biography identifies his mother as Kashubian/Polish. If you would read his works you would see that judging by many of his main characters, which may be assumed to be projections of himself, he does not identify himself "SOLEY" with Germany and the German language, because these characters' ethnic mixture of both German and Kashubian is stressed. Oscar Matzerath, Grass's most famous character, was definitely more sympathetic towards his Kashubian side as is evinced by the love he shows for his Kashubian granny in both The Tin Drum and The Rat, and the hatred he shows towards his Nazi German father.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

this surname which appears maybe Baltic

Thats what I think it is supposed to be. It is the surname of Donny the friend of the Polish-American characters Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski and Walter Sobchak in the Cohen brothers' comedy film which pays tribute to the attitudinal diversity of Polonia in California titled The Big Lebowski. I suppose they had Donny be a Lithuanian in reference to the Polish-Lithuanian alliance of years gone by, thus also making their battle with the German nihilists, in which Donny loses his life, a sort of Battle of Grunewald in an LA bowling alley parking lot.
