News / Polish President Lech Kaczynski and gov officials die in a plane crash in Russia [686]

However, gas and patriot missiles are an entirely different matter. For instance, just take a look at what's going on in the Ukraine. I predict Poland may have similar troubles ahead.

Not just Poland Olga. Very slowly Russia is turning the EU into Russian oil/gas addicts. No doubt about it.

The missile shield was the right idea, people didn't like it, Obama caved in but my prediction is that in post-Obama years that shield will happen. Maybe in Poland, maybe in Slovakia or Bulgaria but I think it will.

Kuro - I watched the video and looked into the articles, thanks for posting the video in particular it was an interesting perspective for sure. (My thought here are not necessarily in any chronological order)

Some things that really don't make any sense to me is the h1n1 "hero" status of Poland for not using it - I'm sorry but who cares? Poland lucked out because the spread of it was very limited however had it gone the other way everyone would've been blaming the Polish health ministry for the many deaths. In march of last year I caught the A-flu which the swine flu is based on. I was in Mexico just a week or so earlier and needless to say they did all kinds of tests on me. Despite being in pretty good shape those were some of the worst days of my life. I don't think there was one tiny part of my body that didn't hurt, ache or shivered. I recovered quickly because I took Tamiflu and because I'm in good health overall but not sure how long it'd take if I was older for example...

After this episodes I will NEVER go without being vaccinated again. Of course, I've been vaccinated for all kinds of weird diseases in the past because I travel all over the world...

Anyways, my point here is that Poland is a tiny country and no one really cares about them deciding not to use the vaccine. I think it was irresponsible and they should've let the people themselves decide but that's a different story. I see zero chance of this "controversy" being connected to the Smolensk accident.

The second part that surprised me was all the nonsense about the government refusing to spend money on fighting the recession, the Zloty getting strong, etc. C'mon, all states have disagreements, why would they even mention this here?

To think someone would want to kill all those people simply because the Zloty is too strong or too weak or because they haven't joined the Euro is just ludicrous.

Now, when I was watching those people say - not again, I don't want my grandchildren 70 years from now find out the real truth about the "new" Katyn just like we did about the "old" Katyn - that was understandable to me, I really connected with them there.

(By the way, very impressed with how well versed in English some people were.)

One "theory" really blew my mind. So all those people would've been kidnapped, and taken to Russia, then the airplane flew just with the crew all the way to Smolensk and because some lights are moved the pilot crashed into the trees.

For the sake of our discussion - wasn't this trip sort last minute thing? I don't think it was planned several months in advance (Tusk's visit I believe was). What kind of logistical effort would it take to kidnap that many people and take them to Russia without anyone ever noticing something wasn't right?

The shots we're hearing could very well have been warning shots to scare people off. If there was a major accident at a US air force base and some journalists or whoever got in there would be a very short period from the warning shot to the real shot if people didn't leave immediately.

I've said it all along that the Russians should've invited other agencies asap after this accident or the conspiracies would flourish for ever. There IS a reason for it no doubt. In the past the Russian regime excelled at lying and deceiving so it's no wonder people are so suspicious. The Soviet propaganda machine was simply enormous and overwhelming - dzisiaj Правда jutro Pravda, right? Heck to this day Poles will say that WWII started when Germany invaded Poland which is the Soviet version which of course became the norm. In reality the war started when Germany with the support of the Soviet Union invaded Poland (Molotov-Ribbentrop pact) and the Soviet Union invaded a few weeks after Nazi-Germany. Both of those countries started WWII - not just Germany yet the Soviet propaganda won.

My point is that yes, Russians knew then and know now how to manipulate media and that's why people don't trust them to this day. However, I still don't think this it was a conspiracy and if it was - it was a very good one.

Right after the accident they should've invited other safety agencies to review what happened there. It'd have been a great gesture by the Russian president to allow both Russian but also Polish soldiers to guard the site until the investigators arrived, even let them guard without weapons. It's very possible that Putin meant well when he took over the investigation but I don't think it was a smart move.

In a nutshell some of the comments on the video were very far-fetched but I sort of understand why.

Genealogy / Polish & Prussian/German town name cross-reference. [100]

I'll just answer the Russian question...

Prussians are definitely not part Russians - if anything they're Germans.

It's a simplified answer as the original Prussians no longer exist. They were Baltic people related to the Lithuanians and Latvians (NOT Russians).

The region is pretty much split between Poland and Russia today but has been it's own country for many years and the capital was Königsberg which today is called Kaliningrad (Królewiec i Polish). For a very long time Prussia was also part of Germany. Confusing enough? Welcome to European history... ;)

Prussia is the English term. In Polish it's called Prusy and in German it's called Preußen.

Genealogy / The last name is Krzywoszyja. Help? Am I Polish? [30]

Really? I've never heard that. I found this explanation online which corresponds to what I always heard:

"Not every Polish surname ends in "-ski". Siudek, for example, is Polish, but there's no "-ski" involved. Jankowicz is Polish as well. Lots of Polish surnames don't end in "-ski", but a lot of them to. It's very common.

It indicates where you're from, or "who" you're from - or at least it did, back in the olden days, when they were coming up with surnames. In Polish names, the "-ski" serves that purpose. It means "of", or "connected with," or "from". So, for example, the surname Piekarski means "of the baker (piekarz)". Lipinski means "one from the place of the lindens," as lipa means linden, lipiny means "place of the lindens", and add the "-ski" to the end, and it means "a person from..." or "a person somehow connected to the place with the linden trees."

Genealogy / The last name is Krzywoszyja. Help? Am I Polish? [30]

It's definitely a Polish last name. It means ~crooked neck (hope I got it right?).

As far as the "a" at the end - Polish names often have a male and a female version; for example Kowalski and Kowalska

In this case however it's simply because szyja (neck) ends with an a.

There are blond, light-skinned Poles and there are olive-skinned and dark-haired Poles. Throughout the history the Polish territory has been moved many times and also many people from other lands have settled in Poland in the past.

Your name definitely sounds Polish to us - congratulations and we're glad to have you here in our club. :)

News / Polish President Lech Kaczynski and gov officials die in a plane crash in Russia [686]

Am I right in saying they had to identify human remains through DNA? What's the temperature for a human body to be so badly burned that it is unrecognizable? What happens to plastic at very high temperatures? I guess you know what I am getting at.

I see, thanks for clarifying... Well, it's conceivable to speculate that if the airplane hit the trees (which it looks like it did) it's very possible that at one point it broke apart and certain parts could've fallen away from the fire... I've seen some gruesome ntsb investigation pictures and you just never know exactly how an airplane or the different parts will disintegrate...

News / RUSSIA TO MAKE PUBLIC THE KATYN FILES... [274]

Well, all good points. I believe that if you combine the time frame of the Russian empire with the Soviet empire then yes, much more than others.

I'd guess no, the modern Poles wouldn't like the kind of treatment you're talking about but the entire process of admitting war crimes is a fairly new phenomenon in Russia. Germany is still, to this day putting former Nazi officials on trial - something I agree with. I don't expect the 80 year olds to go to jail but I do want them to die knowing they died as war criminals. Has ANY soviet/russian soldier ever been put on trial for the atrocities they've committed? Yet you're expecting everyone to say, wow, Putin said "sorry about the 22,000, our bad... Let's be friends now, ok?"

Well, if I remember it correctly it was Putin who was the first official Russian ever bowing before the polish victims of Katyn.

Did that escape somehow your attention? *seriously puzzled*

Well, Yeltsin made the first admission. Putin attended the commemoration and yes it was appreciated.

I disagree with some of the vehemently anti-Russian posts here but at the same token I'm not going to be jumping for joy simply because after 70 years Russia finally admitted to the Katyn massacre... It's a slow process and people need to know they can rely on Russia being their true friend who'll disagree with them on occasion but will not be turning off the gas supplies, etc. to earn political points. In a way, the Russian governments have been their own worst enemies because had they played their cards right they'd have had some very loyal friends surrounding them but instead they've created mistrust no matter which direction they're looking at.

I agree with most of your post here except the "Georgia was a part of plan of former US administration for Russia isolation" comment.

In my view the plan was to de-isolate Georgia from the Russian isolation that was already going on. It was about making Europe less dependent on the Russian supply lines. So not really to an effort to isolate Russia but to lessen Europe's dependence on Russian oil/gas which Russia likes to use for political gains.

I guess instead of a "US" puppet in Ukraine as you called it there's now a Russian puppet there but the pendulum will swing again, and again...

His praising? It certainly goes well beyond that.

What does it say? Don't want to subscribe...

I don't think I use reflexes when I think about Russia, I think of history. It's good to be cautious, especially when it comes to dealing with a country that has been brutal toward Poland (and other nations) so many times. When I say country I'm talking about the regime of course.

At the same token, it's good to be able to forgive and to move on. In my view, the process of forgiveness has been severely stalled by Putin but will eventually resume once he's gone, and one day he will be.

News / Polish President Lech Kaczynski and gov officials die in a plane crash in Russia [686]

Well, if that visibility was as great as 8 km they'd never gotten this close to the ground because they'd have seen the trees and other obstacles. When we're in visual conditions if we see things that do not correspond to our instruments we don't just keep descending simply because the instruments tell us to. If it makes no sense we go around.

To me the visibility in the video was a mile or less but that means nothing Olga. There could be fog literally 500 yards away and we wouldn't be able to recognize it unless you were coming in/from that direction.

I'll tell you a pilot secret. Before the actual approach starts we don't really care (I'm exaggerating to make a point) what the visibility is as long as it's legal for us to start the approach. As long as the conditions are legal for the approach we can start it and then if it suddenly drops to zero we can still continue all the way to the minimums and if we still don't see the runway we go missed (go-around). Occasionally, you'll hear things like "Delta xyz, runway 36 visibility is 1200 rvr, say intentions." "Uhm, we need 1800rvr for this approach." "Roger, uhm, the current visibility just improved, it's now 1800rvr, you're clear for the approach..." ;)

At that point the approach can be initiated and we descend to our minimums and go missed if no runway is in sight (this example was for a precision approach, slightly different for non-prec. approach). I don't want to give you the wrong impression but what I'm trying to emphasize is that it's the actual approach that matters, not the "legal" part before it.

In this case they were lower than they should've been (from what I've seen so far) - so the question isn't really why they started the approach, it's actually somewhat irrelevant. The question is why were they so low?

So far the possible reasons I've seen was incorrect altimeter setting (MANY ways to screw that up), instrument errors, situational disorientation, engine loss close to the ground, numerous engine flame-outs due to bird strikes, etc, etc. We'll have to see what they find out.

Skysoulmate:
Yep, it does--thanks. I was wondering if you've heard this, and what you make of it:
I know it's only a 24 second excerpt, but I'd be interested to hear your take on it.

Very interesting. Did the controller say 8km and haze? If so, they definitely had plenty of visibility to attempt the approach but from what I've seen from the video the visibility was much less than that... However, isn't "dimka" fog? The textual translation says haze but in aviation terminology there's a huge difference between haze and fog. Either way, if he said the visibility was 8km (which is surprising based on the video) they're definitely legal to attempt the approach.

The 744 must be the altimeter setting which Russians sometimes will give you in millimeters of mercury. Don't have my manuals but an online calculator shows 744 mm Hg to be equivalent to 1031.9 hPa which in turn is 30.48 inches of mercury. Is that right? Wow that's some pretty high pressure we're talking about...

It's very brief but basically it sounds like they were "legal" for the approach and the altimeter setting was pretty high but that's based on the atmospheric pressure...

It's so eery to hear this pilot's voice. :(

The comments for this video are just sad. ...they killed them because Poland was against the EU, against Russia, against H1N1 vaccine, against the Jews, and on and on...

Polish stick with Germans. You’re going to be better off.

Well, both Nazi-Germany and the Soviet Union invaded Poland. Germany is a full democracy and as a nation it has paid a tremendous price for atrocites committed by the Nazis. Russia is now finally and barely acknowledging some of the crimes committed by their Soviet henchmen.

That's why, if they have to chose a side, they should stick with Germany.

Guys, your image of Russia looks for me like you take it from comics for simplicity level.

Jed - I actually do like and respect the Russian people, I really do. However, for a society to become truly democratic it has to clean itself from the dirt of the past. That process started with Gorbachev, was sped up by Yeltsin and then was pretty much abolished by Putin. To me, Nashi is a much milder, gentler and more politically correct form of PutinJugend.

Putin once said “Whoever does not miss the Soviet Union has no heart. Whoever wants it back has no brain” and then he basically turned the Soviet mentality into the Russian nationalism.

I know that Russia will eventually become a true democracy but as long ad Putin is in power that process has been significantly delayed, even stalled.

I don't like to see ethnic cleansing results.

I see, thanks. My view is not very popular but I feel the same way about Wrocław, but also Lwów. Those are beautiful and great cities but in my view the German population should not have been expelled from Wrocław and neither should've the Polish population been expelled from Lwów.

Both cities would benefit from their diverse population.

Are you saying that Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia together started WWII? Yeah come to think of it. I think you're right.

Absolutely!

Stalin outsmarted Hitler by invading a few weeks later and portrayed that invasion as protection from the German invasion. An invasion he and Hitler agreed to in the Molotov-Ribbentrop treaty. Each time I hear someone say WWII started when Germany invaded Poland I always correct them by saying No, it started when Poland was invaded by Germany AND Russia.

Poles need to wake up and start to recognize their own past. Poland and Russia should be friends and will be friends but enough of this Russian perpetuated version of history...

Ironically I learned all this this while studying history in Sweden... Go figure... lol

Russia basically gave Nazi Germany the green light to start WWII.

I agree with your post with one exception. Russia did not give Nazi Germany the green light to start WWII.

Instead, Russia along with Nazi Germany did in fact start WWII by dividing Poland and the Baltic States amongst themselves.

Havok - that's only part of the reason. The political officers were educated and they did in fact keep very detailed records. Instead it's more about the fact the truth has been supressed for so long. Russians have heard so many glorious things about their military that what they're finding out now us simply shocking and many refuse to believe it. Then you have the new Putinesque type of brain-wash organizations such as Nashi that focus on positive aspects and supress the negative parts of their history. Patriotism turned into blind nationalism.

I visited Kaliningrad region last year and I didn't like what I found there even now. But what can we do - practical things?

Could you elaborate please?

News / RUSSIA TO MAKE PUBLIC THE KATYN FILES... [274]

BB, Hitler started WWII. Stalin merely reacted later and joined the war to tan Nazi hide.

You're obviously subscribing to the Russian version (and unfortunately due to peoples ignorance often the West's version) of history.

Stalin reneged on the molotov-ribbentrop (sp?) secret portion of the pact with the Nazi Germany where they divided Poland and the Baltic states amongst themselves. His ultimate goal was to get back all the territories Russia lost during and after the revolution. Germany attacked one week after the pact was signed on Sept 1, 1939. Instead of attacking Poland on Sept 1 as agreed to they attacked Poland a few weeks later on Sept 17th portraying themselves as protector's from the German invasion.

Fast forward to today - for the entire time Poland was occupied and later under the Russian brain-wash the Polish population was forced to teach their children about the German invasion and the Soviet "rescue action". You know, Katyń never happened, oh yeah ut happened but it was the Germans who did it, 70 years later (well technically when Yeltsin came to power), ooops, that was the Russians after all. Yet Katyń was just a small part of the Soviet atrocities committed against Poland and made "visible" due to the size of the murders in one place alone.

Today Poland is a free country yet people like you seem to know more about all kinds of anti-American conspiracies, such as 9/11 then you know about your own country being attacked by Germany and Russia in coordination spelled out in the secret portion of the molotov-ribbentrop agreement.

So yes, Stalin was a much worse tyrant and murderer because overall more people died under his regime than under Hitler's. Stalin came to power in 1924 and his murderous campain starter soon therafter. Hitler came to power (ironically in democratic elections) in 1933 and was dead by 1945. Stalin on the other hand continued leading a murderous regime until 1953.

All in all both were horrible and murderous thugs but Hitler was in power shorter time and he also focused on killing non-Germans whereas Stalin kept killing anyone disagreeing with him, Russian or not. There is no pro-Hitler movement in Germany today (except a tiny group of brain-washed rasists) but there are millions of Russians who still think Stalin was a good person.

Moreover, many people still believe in his/soviet version of the history, shockingly to me many of them are Polish, like you Seanus. So in my view, yes, without a doubt Stalin was much worst than Hitler was. Hitler was a Stalin in the making but he never reached his "full potential" (big sarcasm smiley if I had one).

So, the fact that Polish investigators have only had limited access to the evidence, all under Russian "supervision", and that Poland is still not in possession of the black boxes, is completely irrelevant? Were you aware that Polish authorites were only informed this previous week, by Russian investigators, of a fourth black box? Ever heard of "throw the dog a bone"? This would would well-describe this latest maneuvre.

Seanus - I'm finding myself defending the Russians again. In aircraft accidents the country where the accident happened normally keeps all black (orange) boxes, flight deck recorders, etc. I was surprised to hear Poland got one of the boxes and I assume it was a Russian gesture of good-will however, like I said it's very unusual...

News / Polish President Lech Kaczynski and gov officials die in a plane crash in Russia [686]

I did Olga and maybe I should've explained it a little better. To blame it on an NDB station being in an unusual location would be equivalent to saying, I can't believe the cars are driving on the left side of the road here, it's ALWAYS on the right side everywhere else. There's a reason why we use charts and approach plates for each flight no matter how familiar we are with the airport - we don't EVER want to get too familiar to something. It's better to verify with the actual charts/plates.

To quote this article:

"...Jeśli pilot o tym nie wiedział i orientował się na standardową odległość, a w konsekwencji wybrał standardową trajektorię podejścia do lądowania, mógł znaleźć się na wysokości kilku metrów nad ziemią już w odległości 1,5 - 2 km od lotniska..."

How could they not know? That's why we always use charts. I've been to JFK and Shanghai airports hundreds of times and I know the localizer and other frequencies by heart but I still pull out the charts. This was a non-precision approach - even more reason to use charts. If you use them then the "standard" position of an NDB becomes irrelevant - you simply use what you see on the chart and verify it with what you receive from the station (your bearing).

I see the point they're trying to make but I doubt it. ...and IF that would be the actual reason it'd reflect very poorly on the pilots because in a nutshell it means they would've flown based on "past recollections and standard assumptions" and not actual charts. Sorry, that doesn't sound logical at all. Those were professional pilots, I'll wait for the official findings.

PS.
Hope my explanation makes more sense now.

I'm sorry Olga but I don't buy that theory - there's no "standard" NDB distance. Often it's pretty close, especially on military fields but some NDBs are located right on the field, others a mile, two or more away from it. In a nutshell a small beacon station is built somewhere near a field, preferably aligned with the runway (but not always), it's measured, calibrated and then the approach is built based on the actual location and charts are printed. Often it's simply about the topography (a hill is better than a valley, etc.) and land ownership. Let's be suspicious without becoming paranoid.

Could be many things but I still see no signs of a conspiracy Olga.

I hope this "you don't kick on someone who's lying on the ground" philosophy does not prevent the government from releasing the recorders' report.

I hope so too as I do want the full truth so others (pilots in my case) can learn from it.

Love / Are Polish men shy and take things slow? [118]

hi
is it true that polish men are really shy and like to take things really slow?

I hate to generalize because we're all different, however some of us are. I certainly know that I am. After my divorce I got to see a counselor, or a few of them, and to my surprise I was told by all of them that I'm very shy... Divorce didn't have anything to do with it but to "heal" you sort of have to figure out who you are and I was surprised how cluless I actually was - I viewed myself as pretty outgoing but was way off...

Polish guys are great! My boyfriend is the best person, he is my pole. I have never met so warm soul, so great heart, like him. (I'm not polish girl and I dont live in Poland, so I think i can say something on this subject).

Dear spring,

Not sure if you're being facetious here but if you're serious would you please spread the word on this thread? There's lots of spanking and public castrations going on there, you could be our friend... ;)

...I personally thionk the pilot was pressered by flying all thses people. if they would of listen to the Russian tower and landed somewhere else they all would of been alive today.its was human error...

LAGirl - it's possible you are correct however it's much too early to tell. I'll have to defend my aviator brothers here since they cannot defend themselves anymore. We shouldn't be speculating and putting the blame on the pilots until the official investigation is complete. I realize I'm being biased here but you don't kick on someone who's lying on the ground or blame a raped woman for wearing a short skirt... We don't know all the facts and the pilots aren't here to defend themselves. They're innocent until proven guilty.

As for as "if they only listened to the tower" comment. I've flown in the military and in the civilian world and there've been very few occations the tower controller "told us" to go around and each time it was because of a blocked runway. I've never been told by a controller not to land somewhere due to weather. If we're "legal" to go we always give it a try and if we don't see the runway we simply go missed (go-around) and either try again or go somewhere else.

The tower controller is not the person who decides if we should land or not. Heck, from his/her angle the visibility could be zero yet from our angle just 500 meters down the runway we might see the runway just fine. Therefore if the required weather conditions existed (don't know their ops-specs) it'd be absolutely normal and expected of them to give it a try. Why they came this low I'm not sure but will let the professionals determine it for us.

For now, this was a tragedy that hasn't been explained yet but the pilots are still innocent...

Just my biased penny on the subject.

History / The great mistakes of Poland's history? [216]

The great mistakes of our history ?

Not sure if it's been mentioned already but in my view the inclusion of the Liberum Vetoprovision in the Polish-Lithuanian Constitution made governance almost impossible.

Although a great idea in theory, in reality it doomed Poland as a country and the Russian, the Prussian and Austrian empires used it to their advantage promptly.

...the Russians make fun of the Ukrainiansbut in the end they love each other....

Not so sure about that - Russians in Ukraine - yes. Ukrainians in Ukraine - definitely not.
