while 44% say they don't know Obama's religion and 11% say he is a Muslim.

That last number will probably grow after Madonna urged voters to vote the decent Muslim.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

milky is on your ignore list. [+]

What do you mean?

blogs.wsj.com/emergingeurope/2012/08/30/slowing-polish-economy-puts-pressure-on-central-bank-to-act/

WARSAW-Poland's economy is decelerating at a faster pace than expected due to both external and domestic factors, increasing pressure on the central bank to ease monetary policy a few months after it raised borrowing costs.

Weak second-quarter growth-that slowed to the lowest level since the third quarter of 2009-dashed the hopes of the European Union's largest economy of defying ongoing global economic turmoil.

According to Poland's national statistics office, gross domestic product expanded 2.4% in the second quarter, lower than the expectations of the central bank, the economy ministry and analysts, who had forecast 2.9% growth.

Of all the economies in the European Union, Poland's was the only one to avoid a recession in the wake of the global financial crisis in 2008-2009, and was one of the fastest-growing since then, showing surprising resilience to the most recent troubles of its main trading partner, the euro zone. However, these headwinds appear now to be affecting the Polish economy and the slowdown can't be pinned solely on external factors, with private consumption and investments both slowing in the second quarter, and domestic demand contracting.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Of course, sources differ.

But I wouldn`t call it vile - after all, recall what your Scottish/British compatriots eat with/in their beloved dish on great Scottish celebrations- do you ever call it vile in their presence?

The Polish ones are nice with bread, gherkins and vodka.

I prefer tinned sardines with vodka. Old Soviet secret services` advice for agents who participate in drinking parties - eat two tins of sardines and you can go, drink without limitations and still stay sober.

Yes, sprats! I love them. I rip off the head, bite of the belly (soft intestines, yuk) and then shred the whole fish with my teeth, millimeter after millimiter, leaving the tail.

I especially like those big ones, sardine size.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

Yes, but lowering taxes usually takes positive effect after a few years while the government needs money NOW.

It hasn't affected us at all. In fact my business is doing exceptionally well and my husband is having his best year yet.

That`s good. Hopefully, it will always be like that.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

True but that can't go on forever, especially when the only important decisions of the gov regarding economy is raising the taxes.

Do you suggest that by lowering taxes they would be able to kick the economy into a higher gear?

A crisis in 2014? Thanks for telling me, PF Delphic Oracle. It must be amazing to be able to see into the future!

No, nothing supernatural about it, it only takes a little intelligence, lol! :):):):)

Time to obey my nagging wife, "Haven't you had enough? Come to bed! Bloody forum!"

Your wife is a real monster. Mine has never said anything like that for 7 years.

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

it kinda connects

Read how Jews from the Nazi camp in Warsaw were saved by insurgents in 1944. Some of them joined Polish units and fought like mad.

After the first shots demolished the towers near the main entrance, foot soldiers entered into action. Within minutes small groups of Germans started to escape from the towers and to retreat to the administration building and further out beyond the wall of the compound in the direction of Pawiak. Platoon 'Felek' quickly flushed the remaining Germans out of the various areas of the camp. In the administration building they saw a most unusual scene. In the main hall there was a long table covered with a white tablecloth, a tureen filled with still warm soup, bottles of liquor and untouched plates. Only the turned over chairs testified to the hasty retreat of the Germans as an antique grandfather clock in the corner chimed eleven o'clock. The whole action took just 30 minutes of intense fighting. The fleeing black clad SS men were under Polish fire still some distance from the compound.

I hear a lot about a crisis in Poland these days. For me, as a foreigner who has made his home in Poland, I find the use of this word a little hyperbolic in the current circumstances.

Sorry, Orpheus. We are talking about the crisis in 2014, not now. Now we are experiencing a mere slow down.

From where I sit, well fed, not too badly off, half cut, to be honest, I can't see a crisis.

Lucky you. :):):)

Maybe I should buy a TV.

No!! The PF is enough. We will inform you faster than the evening news!

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

Your notion of "General Uprising of Jews and Poles" denies the basic facts.

My notion?????

Don`t be silly and read all posts that were posted earlier.

so if you did it together in 1943, it wouldn't be the same in your eyes? They were also Poles (Polish Jews). As I said, the chances were the same.

It was the desperate Uprising from the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto.

I hope, we'll be able to discuss constructively without any name calling.

Sorry, guys, if you want to discuss it, open a new thread about Warsaw Ghetto Rising 1943. I have nothing against and will gladly join you there,

But this thread is about Warsaw Rising 1944.

Don`t even try or you risk losing your posts in the bin. :):):):):):):)

Experts are warning that Polish economy is losing its impetus which so far has made Poland a green island in recession-stricken Europe.

It seems the global crisis which has evaded us so far is knocking on the door.

Poles have become very careful with the money they spend. I can see it in my clients who, to my surprise, turned into stubborn negotiators. It has never happened in my long teaching career. I am seriously considering lowering my prices in order to keep the amount of classes I have had so far.

PS. BTW, any idea how much does a maid in a 5-star hotel in Krakow make from basic salary and tips? I am negotiating a contract with a group of maids and neither would like to screw them nor be screwed myself.

wbj.pl/article-60170-polish-economy-slowing-down.html

Polish GDP grew by 2.4 percent in Q2 of 2012, accordign to figures released on Thursday by Poland's Central Statistics Office. The Ministry of Economy had forecasted a growth of 2.9 percent in Q2 of 2012. Marek Belka, the head of the National Bank of Poland had also recently predicted Q2 GDP growth at roughly 3 percent. The Polish economy grew 4.3 percent in 2011 before slowing to 3.5 percent y/y in Q1 2012.

polstock.pl/headline_details/polish_economy_slows_in_q2_to_ below_expectation_24_annual_rate/en/613

Poland's economy disappointed in the second quarter, slowing to a below-expectation 2.4% annual growth rate with domestic drivers nearly absent despite the Q2 culmination of Poland's Euro2012 preparations. Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski admitted the figures are "disappointing," but dared venture that Q3 growth will not slow down any further. A senior official at the Central Statistical Office (GUS), however, openly expressed fears that growth rates will fall further in Q3 and Q4.

newsroom.nordeamarkets.com/en/2012/08/30/poland-bitterly-disappoi nting-gdp-figures/

GDP growth in Q2 proved much weaker than expected, slowing down to 2.4% y/y from 3.5% in Q1 (our forecast was 2.8% and market consensus 2.9%). Domestic demand dropped 0.2% y/y after 2.7% rise in Q1. A part of this is due to destocking (change in inventories had negative contribution of 1.5%-point in Q2 after positive contribution of 0.8%-point in Q1), which is unlikely to be continued on a large scale in next quarters. However, key components of domestic demand bitterly disappointed, indicating that underlying trend in economic activity is weaker than expected.

Either way, 2014 and 2015 look like being yet more electoral disasters for PiS.

In crisis times, anything may happen.

"If Poland is in danger and starts coming apart I will not stand it. I'll get on with it and I will lead, no one will stop me" - said the former president.

Like Cincinnatus! Or even PiƂsudski! :):):):)

Cincinnatus was regarded by the Romans, especially the aristocratic patrician class, as one of the heroes of early Rome and as a model of Roman virtue and simplicity.[citation needed] He was a persistent opponent of the plebeians.[2] When his son was convicted and condemned to death, Cincinnatus was forced to live in humble circumstances, working on his own small farm, until an invasion caused him to be called to serve Rome as dictator, an office which he immediately resigned after completing his task of defeating the rivaling tribes of the Aequians, Sabines, and Volscians. He lived approximately around the time that Lucius Junius Brutus did.

Is it ok to speak polish very badly to someone in Poland

It is perfectly OK. Your interlocutor will be delighted that you try to speak Polish which is considered one of the hardest to learn languages in the world.

Are you just making a fool of yourself speaking Polish?

Never!!!

Is this film wrong on so many different levels?

It is intended as a little mocking but nevermind.

Right. Then, m the parliament comparison should be in another thread, Clash of cultures.

Most Labour MPs get along very well with the Tories privately

One day such relations will also happen in Poland, we just need to wait:

History / Polish military uniforms [57]

the name I was used was far more common at the time both amongst English and Normans (though whether anyone ever called him that to his face I couldn't say :) )

Yes, indeed, but:

1. We don't live in their times, we live1000 years later.

2. Saying Bastard suggests contempt. I think the patriotic British shouldn't treat their Founding Fathers so lightly.
