them what they'd like to drink

The late Anthony Hogg who was usually on the money about both wine and cocktails wrote (in the 70s when he was already old) that at a smart lunch, rather than ask what people want when they arrive, just press a glass of chilled champagne into their hand.

Language / Dog Commands in Polish [49]

I just used to whistle and my doggie always came.

Hard to know why someone would want all those "commands" unless they're training police dogs.

News / Coronavirus in Poland - part 2 [599]

Poor elderly high risk patients

We shouldn't forget the 83 kids in American Samoa who died of measles after that Kennedy person and his 'foundation' started intentionally pushing vaccine scepticism there.

You seem to be confusing Marxism with Owenism, Social Democracy Trade Unionism. Easy perhaps if your understanding of life derives entirely from the internet.

As an employee, presumably you receive a wage and are in a Union. Perhaps one day, if you sacrifice your own interests in favour of your employer's, perhaps they'll let a tiny bit of their wealth trickle down to you.

revolutionary

Where did you pull that gem from, fat boy?

Everybody can have savings. Providing they don't spend their wage on pizza or Skype credit to make menacing phone calls that they thought were anonymous...

Perhaps you should wind down the rather pathetic schoolboy attempts at rhetoric; they just make you look foolish.

Food / Healthy polish food? [143]

My favourite is Botwinka, also very seasonal. I won't have Szczawiowa in the house though.

@Lyzko
Neither of those are especially healthy but they're both good in season.

still pays US taxes.

They're quite bizarre. I used to own some shares in a large American company and had to fill in tax forms for there, even though I've never lived there and in any case, they'd have no way of enforcing anything.

I sold them in the end, partly because I was annoyed at having to fill a foreign country's forms in and partly because of employment conditions and certain other ethical concerns about the company.

rare roast beef with mustard

Sunday lunch food.

Simpson's is still going though.

Tankards of ale are very old fashioned, however many pubs do a nice Sunday meal.

bangers & mash as a popular dish throughout the UK,

Not that popular nowadays.

I have never seen it before

It's used often. Has two meanings, the original and literal one a bit archaic nowadays, the metaphorical meaning is more usual now we don't use coal much.

Smut.

Frank Auerbach has just died aged 98. Perhaps the foremost British and European artist of the past few decades. He did this one in 1995, showing the road outside his studio.

Fluent

Is a misunderstood word. It's not a synonym for excellent. You can y fluent and make a lot of mistakes; immigrants to a country who learnt the lańguage around them rather than from a textbook are often very fluent but go against a lot of the principles of grammar.

Food / Best hypermarket to shop for foods in Poland? [50]

the scent of my grandad :) ......... It's all very Proustian, this talk of scents of the past.

I was visiting an Old People's Home and there was a decorative bottle of Heaven Scent talc next to the bog. It was as if my granny was in the room.

If you like those vintage British scents, have you ever tried Imperial Leather by Cussons?

I use Brut 33 sometimes. They still sell it and it's actually good quality. Nobody under a certain age remembers it, and for people older, it has nostalgia.

I'll tell you one brand of kitchen appliance

One good thi grin Poland is some of the 'cheaper' brands made for Eastern Europe. The quality is often very good and they tend to be robust. Plus the 'special' versions from well known brands for that market. I bought a Kenwood stand mixer/food processor, made in the U.K. but sold in Poland, Ukraine etc. Much cheaper than their other stuff, takes the same attachments and has lasted me for years.

EuroRTV are particularly good for those products and Media Markt often has some.

People who have millions won't be retiring in Poland, Mexico or Canada.
Maybe the French Riviera though.

There ar even higher taxes in France. And they still have to file returns if they live overseas.

News / Polish military contingent in Lebanon. [183]

Bright New World, translated into Polish in reverse order as Nowy Wspaniały Swiat.

Oddly enough, Nowy wspaniały świat is how Huxley's Brave New World is titled in its Polish translation.

Dreary and rather annoying like most Huxley (though I can see why it was popular in PL) except for Eyeless in Gaza, very worth reading.

Since when did men need perfumes??

Since they started showing some self-respect, a few centuries ago.

to soothe my skin.

Moisturising is more important; any will do, even the cheapest (though non-greasy ones are best), last thing at night.

News / How will Polish-American relations change if Trump is elected president again? [635]

I don't know enough about the origins of Germanic people but doubt they have Slavic roots.

One thing that used to be seen as a little embarrassing is that some of the major early archeological sites in PL were inhabited by Burgundian rather than proto-Slavic cultures.

White civilization and paternal language to all Whites

Why would skin colour matter?

Language / Dog Commands in Polish [49]

the dogs seem to figure out you talk about the same thing (it is especially true with the dog's name)

Very much so. It's the tones they hear, not so much the words, even though they seem to recognise them.

had the same problems but came out better....it's definitely bad government!

Maybe their economies are more adaptable; we came out well because we responded efficiently.

There always Spolem.

It's supposed to be a co-op though I've never figured out how to join and there aren't any posters in the shops about it. I once asked someone how to join and just got a blank look.

but frankly....it's abit like with the Dems in the US

Yes, Kamala Harris would have been good, as are the SPD in Germany.

They're both a bit too much towards the right wing however the do their job well and there's no reason that mild dissatisfaction with some policies should lead to du ping them in favour of fascists.
