Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

That's absolutely disgusting!

Yes, when my parents ate it and tried to feed it to me when a small boy, I was ready to puke at the very sight. But after decades, we usually tend to recreate our parents` ways and so did I. I like it because I have a sweet tooth.

I come from Malopolska but I never had it ?????

Yes, I should have been more exact. It is a Krakow dish. Even more exactly, from one district only. :):) Another riddle. I am obsessed. :)

This is an expert level - you won't guess it ;)

Yes, let`s help Chemikiem because this slang can be difficult indeed. It is one of hundreds expressions which mean completely drunk. Its obscurity comes from the fact that a German made fighter plane became associated with heavy drinking.

This one is ironic:I can see a forest of arms/hands.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Exactly, That is why I decided to limit my daily intake of pork from 1 kg to 0.5 kg. :)

Doug, you mentioned fish dishes in Poland and Britain before. What do you think of this? It is Christmas sweet carp, Lesser Poland delicacy: :):)

I find that Polish beef lacks flavour maybe because the meat isn't hung/aged

Quite possible, but remember Poles seldom buy and cook beef today, probably for financial reasons, it is much more expensive than pork, let alone chicken. But it is not a problem as I add so many spices and other stuff that I can hardly detect any flavour.

I think the main fun in eating it is not flavour but an exciting feeling of relishing on our primordial heritage.:)

This is true. I remember someone complining about British bread.

Certain Polish guy`s video about the worst British food mentions bread. I always laugh when I watch it because , well , see for yourself. Crazy and exaggerated but funny comments nevertheless.

youtube.com/watch?v=wxrxwSCB31U

but I don't fancy raw minced steak even if it has got spices etc in it. Raw egg is just a no no for me. Next!

Actually, the true tatar should be shredded, not minced. But nobody has time for it today. As for eggs (YOLKS only), they vanish in the mass of meat because the whole stuff is mixed thoroughly.

History / Unforgettable quotes about Poland and Poles from Polish and world`s history and culture [99]

I won`t wait for the 17th September 1939 anniversary of the Soviet invasion in fear of forgetting about this quote:

Soviet Foreign and Prime Minister Molotov said:

It became apparent that all that was needed was an initial attack of the German Army and, after that, the attack of the Soviet [Army]; in order to leave nothing of [Poland,] this monstrous bastard of the Treaty of Versailles ...

Wow, once this was my fav thread - Polish food is my hobby.

I looked through all pages here - the vast majority of old posters are gone, only jon357 and rozumiemnic are still with us.

That is why I think we can start anew. Even if we discuss sth again, it shouldn`t be a problem.

Most of the first 9 pages have been deprived of their photo links, but photos have stayed in posts from page 10 plus.

We never talked about raw beef tatar steak here. It has been mentioned by Rich in another thread.

https://polishforums.com/travel/poland-photo-riddles-25380/66/#msg1675257

I could eat tatar every day. It would kill me before my scheduled day of departure, though, as nobody ever accused Polish food of prolonging life.

I wouldn`t be able to eat it every day because I usually make a 2 pounder with double add-ons of everything around it.

What do you think of it? Doesn`t it look tasty? .

Yes, although this being taken advantage of is practiced much later than one showed compassion. So, you are entitled to deal roughly with sb but let him/her off the hook and later they lash back at you with all their might.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

I think it is one of the fields which is hard to judge...

Yes, exactly, we have come back to our previous discussion about performance related pay.
https://polishforums.com/study/poland-various-education-school-issues-84668/#msg1681392

But, as I don`t fear being asessed as the one of poor performance, I can still face a little challenge. Teachers of the world: India, Nigeria, Argentina, the USA, Russia - unite and come here to stand up to me in a fair international competition for a better teacher. :):)

As you know I've been consistently calling you out on this.

No, the problem is you have been consistently lying as it was pointed to you many times in other threads. :):)

You know next to nothing not only about real Poland but also about Polonia, hence that famous slip up of yours in the first posts in this thread when you placed rabbies and Zionists at the tables of Polonia charity event. Lies intermingled with ignorance. :)

hahaha Thanks, I still have fun whenever I imagine the situation. Tell it to Am Polonia and they will tear you apart alive. :):)

Based on the American experience, which, admittedly, may be different, the American version of that oath has their, instead of the.

Their means teachers` or students`?, because you are ambiguous.

Would these same eager and idealistic teacher's still believe in these "values" themselves

I have nothing against. Let the free market decide - if a better teacher replaces a bad one, it is OK. I can take this challenge and have always done so - I have never felt bothered by the arrival of non-Polish teachers at the schools where I worked.

Besides, why Marxist creed? I suppose similar regulations of teachers` duties are in most civilised countries.

there's a particular mess with Polish and Maths classes.

Yes, we should thank PiS for that mess. New curricula for high school have just appeared, the requirements are one level higher than before, those neobolsheviks really think that students have become smarter under their rule? :)

Teacher`s career is divided into 4 levels of promotion: trainee, nominated, contract, certified. The whole path takes about 15 years.

Teachers take an oath when they become nominated. It takes place in the local council or town hall.

The Teacher`s Charter states among others:

Teachers should educate and raise the youth in accordance with the love of the Motherland, the abidance with the Constitution, the atmosphere of freedom of conscience and respect for every person.

Teachers should develop in students moral and civil values in accordance with the ideas of democracy, peace and friendship between people of different nationalities, races and beliefs.

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

I found the house`s exact location in Google maps and went there to have a closer look, after which I liked it even more.

Today, when I see those pics, I can`t believe everything looks so different now. The vegetation in the front and side garden have been replanted.and they have grown a lot, the house has been replastered and repainted.

Do you know what convinced me? A dead bird of prey which was lying next to the fence.

Not only that. Also, 3 giant walnut trees next to the house. I have always had a weakness for walnuts, they are my fav autumn produce. When we had eventually bought that farm ,the first trees which I ordered for the orchard were 12 walnuts.

History / Unforgettable quotes about Poland and Poles from Polish and world`s history and culture [99]

Still communist times:
Cardinal Wyszyński, the one who successfully defended the Church against communist pressure, commented on Polish resistance to becoming Soviet like: You will never win Poles` approval using a threat. Use heart, instead. Of course, communists were not able to follow that advice, that is why they lost.:)

History / Unforgettable quotes about Poland and Poles from Polish and world`s history and culture [99]

Ordinary soldiers and some low rank officers were decent guys, just average Poles (compulsory service at the time). It was those top shots in the headquarters who ordered to mercilessly crush down the opposition, even shooting at them. They didn`t fear Poles` or West`s hostile reaction to their dirty deeds. The only thing they feared were Soviets who might have them deposed from their posts within hours if they hadn`t carried out Kremlin`s orders. And the order was clear - put a stop to the Solidarity disease which could spread all over Eastern block. .

Double goatseye! :)

When discussing certain phrases with students, we always try to trace their origin. E..g, window=wind eye. That goat`s corner probably meant the enclosure where goats were kept, with only one exit.

Who is a fat fish? .

History / Unforgettable quotes about Poland and Poles from Polish and world`s history and culture [99]

many of them blamed the excessive patriotism of the II RP in ethnic Polish circles for the war

Yes, this or still another thing - communists deliberately decided to reject everything what Second Republic was built on because they were trying to construct a completely new system. Bełza`s poem had been very popular before the war so it was to be forgotten in new times. However, communists came to reason and after the stalinist period, the poem was restored. I learnt it at school in the second half of 20th century.

Talking about communism - two other famous quotes from the period:
Let`s talk like a Pole with a Pole - Lech Wałęsa commented on his negotiations with the communist government in 1980 about creating Solidarity..

During first Solidarity of 1981, monuments to massacred workers were erected in various places in Poland. The motto at the time was: Never let a Pole shoot at another Pole again. The motto was soon broken during martial law.

I think you quite often don't know how to take him.

Please, don`t take me yet, I still would like to post a few interesting things in the forum. :)

E..g, Władysław Bełza wrote this patriotic poem for kids in pre-war times. It is commonly believed pre WW2, but no, WW1.

Boy`s version
Who are you?
A Polish child. (or lad)
What's your emblem?
The eagle in white.

I just learnt from this PL wiki that communists banned it in 1950s. Unbelievable.

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katechizm_polskiego_dziecka

There is a version for girls, too. Sorry, no rhyme.

Who are you?
A Polish girl.
What`s your emblem?
White lily.

To upchuck, a round trip lunch, puke, technicolor yawn....

Yes. :):) I recalled another saying from my uni times which comments on the person doing it: he/she is talking to the tigers. :):)

If someone is stuffed?

Loaded? with dough, of course. :)

Anger and resentment has become all-consuming?

Yes! I am not sure about all consuming, but if it means that sb has had enough and reacted in a certain way, after a long period of enduring a situation, then it is the right meaning.

To drive sb into a goat`s corner.

but well... most PE teachers are more interested in their coffee and doing nothing :/

I sometimes joke to my fellow PE teachers that compared to us, "real combat" teachers, they just lazy around - throw a ball and tell students: Here, have a little game and then sit on that wooden gym bench and relax. They always get a little annoyed hearing it. But that`s banter because I can see they work really hard and care about their job So, delph, your school must be unlucky as far as PE staff is concerned.

I don't think it should be graded at all, to be honest. It seems desperately unfair when physical characteristics are different,

This suggestion seems reasonable, indeed.

All negative posts about Poles from you Pawian.

No, if you look through the whole thread again, you will see it is not true.

OK, here`s sth to flatter your hurt ego :)

Norman Davies, a British Polish historian, once said in an interview there was a British saying in the past: When you go to the jungle, take a Polish person with you. I don`t want to write a Pole so that it won` t sound ambiguous.
