History / Modern myths and legends about communist past in Poland [250]

Communist countries focused on heavy industry. It was necessary to produce armament, especially tanks. Poland produced and exported a lot of tanks to Arab countries, later on they were blown up by Israelis or allies in Kuwait. The problem was the tanks were Soviet, we produced them on license. Communist Poland was able to manufacture big things on her own as long as they weren`t too advanced. In case of high technology, we had to import components or even whole technological lines.

Engineers were able to design simple Polish cars (Syrena, Mikrus) but only till the end of 1950s. Later on, all cars produced in Poland were Fiats (or their imitations) from Italy. The technological progress in car production in the world was too fast for communists to catch up with.

History / Modern myths and legends about communist past in Poland [250]

Another myth:
In communism Poland had its own national industry. Poles designed and produced Polish cars. They also produced various advanced products e..g, ships, machinery, electronics. Industry was supplied with many inventions which were purely Polish.

Today, most industry is owned by foreign capital which only assembles things in factories located in Poland.

Life / The climate for gardening in Poland [340]

Fortunately, fruit native to Poland is deliciously sweet. We grow 4 colours of raspberries - do you know which one is the sweetest?

The skies, especially sunsets, are amazing because their atmosphere is brought out by the complete silence in the surroundings (I don`t count crickets).

Life / Do you know these characters from Polish movies? [223]

Łyżko
You forgot cause there was none. :)): Łapicki didn`t play in Kanał.

It is the film "Wesele" directed by Andrzej Wajda where Daniel Olbrychski plays Pan Młody,

Yes, a great film based on an outstanding drama, so full of Polish soul in it. :):)

And Polish soul is also in this one:

Life / Do you know these characters from Polish movies? [223]

And I'm truly disappointed no one got mine. :P

The one about Kwinto? Chemikiem guessed it.

worth pointing out that my clue as to who the actor is and whom he plays

Well, you were close but still not guessed correctly. So, Olbrychski, Wyspiański, what does it tell you?

but which one? (the actress is a favortie of mine though that's not much of a hint....)

Good you reminded us about post 88, almost missed it. She wasn`t a character but presented the initial credits live in a very expressive way.

youtu.be/P5eoBykBqdI

, but the guy (Daniel Olbrychski) looks like playing Stanisław Wyspiański

So now it is easy to guess the title and his role.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Chemikiem, do you remember another thread and a photo in it? I said luncheon meat and you replied:

Awful stuff :(

hahaha

I also said I like it. Probably I used the wrong name because luncheon meat looks awful, like some disgusting substance, meat wholly ground with fat and sth else. (like sb says in a Polish film - dog meat ground with the kennel). The one in the photos is more like canned pork, it is not ground to the end, you can see nice chunks in it.

That was the end of vacation and I decided to regain some weight which I had lost due to intensive swimming practice in the sea, lakes and pools.

News / PiS candidates are losing positions in EU Parliament. Will they keep power in Poland? [358]

There are rumours suggesting that PSL might one day join/ally with PiS. Now they are enemies because PiS is doing their best to attract rural voters, and PiS-controlled state media accuse PSL of all kinds of dirty machinations but in politics everything is possible. There are some politicians in PSL who are currently in the second line but would like to move forward. For them an alliance with PiS is a purely political issue, not personal. PSL is known for taking part in different coalitions, they were very flexible in the past, boys for hire, sort of, as long as they got enough positions.

That is why I wouldn`t mind if they didn`t get to the Parliament at all. They have been on the verge of the election threshold for months and it is quite possible they won`t make it.

Some experts like the idea of 3 opposition blocks: centre right, centre left and left and suggest they might try to win the elections because everything is possible in politics.

Before, with united opposition, some voters could feel lost and decided to skip participating in Euro elections. Now, the 3 blocks offer a clear choice which shouldn`t scare off anyone really interested in removing PiS from power.

History / Polish treasures in Sweden? [18]

Also are there any attempts by the Polish authorities to recover these national treasures

No, there`s no way and no Polish government has ever tried to. The reason is simple: when Sweden attacked and occupied Polish territory, it wasn`t solely Poland but the Commonwealth - Poland united with Lithuania. Formally, today`s Poland has no right to represent the Commonwealth in court. Also, Tacitus is right about aristocratic or royal property.

some of which are now in Swedish museums.

A Swede tried to explain it to me. It doesn`t matter in which museum they are - Polish or Swedish. What matters is that they didn`t disappear or get destroyed during all wars, risings and occupations which happened in Poland during next 300 years after the Swedish Deluge. They have been preserved as the heritage of European culture and that matters most.

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

Wait till she starts breeding, these buggers do the lawn.I suggest grill it while the meat is tender.

Breeding is possible when there is a male rabbit but I am not going to get one. The lawn is not like a typical British lawn after 200 years` care. ):) Currently I pay more attention to trees and bushes, grass is less important especially that weeds are abundant in the area around my place. I tried to strive for a nice lawn at the beginning but realised after 2, 3 years I will never be able to keep it clean.

What happened to your farm house in the true countryside of Poland ?

Jonny, using Past Simple tense by you is illogical. I mentioned it many times here that we treat that property as a summer house. When the summer ends, we come back to the city. As the summer hasn`t finished yet, we are staying in the summer house, so how sth could have happened to it?

Do you get it or not? :):)

Life / The climate for gardening in Poland [340]

Yesterday we picked the only nectarine that grew on a young tree. It looked delicious but was less sweet than ripe nectarines from the shop. I had the same impression last year after trying our melons and watermelons. It occured to me such exotic fruit can grow in Polish climate but will never be as sweet as imported. I suspect keeping them under foil in a primitive green house or at least a tunnel would improve the situation. I must think about it next year, especially that I have practically finished more important works in and around the house.

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

Apart from the rabbits

This one miniature rabbit that we have is a bit wild and she loves escaping. A few days ago she learnt how to jump over 1 meter high fence in her enclosure (which I made last year). She escaped a few times within an hour and I didn`t know how. I finally made the fence higher in one corner and it worked. Kids had fun catching her, though

Wild but so cute. In off-season months she lives with us in our apartment.

One might ask why we don`t let her hop free around the garden but keep her in the enclosure instead. Firstly, the garden is too big - if she dug a hole in a nook under a tree or bush, I wouldn`t find her for a week. Secondly, the village cats visit us every day. I have nothing against it but I saw them in action killing young hares in the area, so if the rabbit was free, they might treat is a prey. But when kept in her own place, they sort of know it is a farm animal and stay away. Thirdly, the enclosure is big enough for the rabbit to run her races inside, so the open garden is really the last option to be considered.

USA, Canada / Poles Living in the Chicago Area [343]

Chicago is becoming just like Detroit only in slow motion which imo is even worse. No wonder all the poles left.

Hmm, some Polish Ams must have stayed, it is impossible all left.
But, where did they leave? To another city or just Chicago suburbs? If the latter, it is not leaving, just changing the address in the same city.

They obviously asked you for a reason junkie

Yes, in those times I looked like a big junkie. Today, with gray hair and half of it lost, I look like an old junkie. Do you think it is my fault? :):)

Don`t shame yourself man, and this venerable forum, with your vulgarities.

Crow, that is a perfect reply. Respect, he asked for that. I would also be scared if I were you. hahaha

News / Degenerate "rainbow" eyesore to disappear from Saviour Square (Plac Zbawiciela) in Warsaw [297]

Because 54% is ready to tolerate sodomites that silently fcuking in their apartments. Public actions is another matter,

Do gays make love under the rainbow so that you can`t stand the view? :):)

I clearly said that the majority of Poles are AGAINST EXPANDING GAY RIGHTS

Yes, but we are talking about a fekking rainbow in this thread! :) Tolerance towards homosexualism also includes acceptance of such symbols.

Again, majority of Poles are against pride parades

Quote a source, please. And preferably not the one from 2008. And an independent one, not from a rightist site.:):)

News / Degenerate "rainbow" eyesore to disappear from Saviour Square (Plac Zbawiciela) in Warsaw [297]

Polls and surveys show that majority of Poles are against gay rights - all show majority of Poles are against gay marriage, gay adoption,

And that`s a perfect example of another communist method, namely manipulation. On the surface you are right, but getting deeper, you are not.
Why are you packing all rights into one basket?
Let`s start with the basic one - the right to come out with your preferences without being threatened with violent contempt.

54% Poles believe homosexualism should be tolerated. 24% think it shouldn`t.
niezalezna.pl/279573-polacy-a-homoseksualizm-najnowszy-sondaz

I hope you know what majority means.

In this way it is obvious that the rainbow in Warsaw, which is the topic of this thread,, and which you want to get rid of, is supported by 54%.

Gay rights like marriage and adoption can be discussed in another thread. Now let`s focus on the rainbow.

Well, after knowing that 54% Poles think homosexualism should be tolerated, will you leave the rainbow in peace??? :):)

A 2008 study revealed In 2011, according t

Be serious. Digging up data from 11 years ago? I consciously reject poll results from 2017 as too antiquated when I quote such sources. The views of Poles are changing on our eyes and two, three years is maximum we can rely on.

News / Degenerate "rainbow" eyesore to disappear from Saviour Square (Plac Zbawiciela) in Warsaw [297]

Did you mean tyranny of minorities, that started to look like communist or nazi ideological tyranny?

No, I was talking about methods, not the nature of the system in general. One of communists` methods was supressing independent thinking by imposing restrictions or total ban on freedom of speech, religion, convictions etc etc . That`s what antigay movements want to do today.

But as I said, it is futile. Poland isn` t on the moon that we can isolate ourselves from the rest of Europe or world. Poles have been looking up to the West for centuries and are quickly adopting Western solutions. It is unpreventable that one day the 20th or 30th Parade in Białystok will pass unnoticed by most people as they won`t consider it worth discussing at all, except for those directly interested.

Simply speaking - you can`t eat a cake and have it. Poland rejected communism and adopted democracy for a reason - no more restrictions on any kind of freedom.

Again, polls and surveys show that the majority of Poles are against gay rights.

We debated it several times and you always repeat that false info. What for?

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

Thousands of students in big cities have been rejected by schools which they wanted to attend.

The government blames local councils for the situation, claiming they support the opposition and don`t want to solve the issue. Yet, in cities where PiS rules the mess is the same or even worse.

Parents have lost touch with their children, parents are too "busy" and leave their children to their own devices

Of course, but not all. A lot of parents care about their children`s education.

Language / Puns and language games in Polish adverts [33]

Let`s end bison topics and switch to other animals.

Do you remember a famous slogan from the times when beer ads were banned?

Mariola ma oczy piwne, Mariola o kocim spojrzeniu -

Mariola has light brown eyes/ vs beer eyes
Mariola with feline eyes/ vs Okocim - one of beer producers.

USA, Canada / Historic(al) Americans and their ties with Poland/Poles [78]

Not annoyed at all, I enjoy railing against leftists.

Yes, some leftists can be really nasty. :)

Yes, Mikulski, Demo senator of Polish origin. It means that not all Polish Americans are pro republican.

Who`s that?

Hint - this is one of American presidents.
