Life / Polish film and serial riddles [137]

Yeap!!!

The Saragossa Manuscript (Polish: Rękopis znaleziony w Saragossie, "The Manuscript found in Zaragoza") is a 1965 Polish film directed by Wojciech Has, based on the 1815 novel The Manuscript Found in Saragossa by Jan Potocki. Set primarily in Spain, it tells a frame story containing gothic, picaresque and erotic elements. In a deserted house during the Napoleonic Wars, two officers from opposing sides find a manuscript, which tells the tale of the Spanish officer's grandfather, Alphonso van Worden (Zbigniew Cybulski).

The film was a relative success in Poland and other parts of communist eastern Europe upon its release, winning the Golden Wolf at the 1965 Bucharest Film Festival. It later also achieved a level of critical success in the United States, when filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola rediscovered it and encouraged its propagation.

News / Dirty deeds of foreign guys in Poland [98]

There are links between torturing animals and serial killers

Exactly.

Two Germans broke into a restaurant, drank the alcohol they found, next they stole a tractor and raided the nearby area. Chased through the fields and caught. Funny.

Thanks for the pictures of the monument with Stalin's name removed, it makes me feel better. I used to feel that it was some kind of vendetta against the people of Szczedrzyk.

How could you think so if so many German memorials were preserved as I see from your link. Their number is really impressive.

Here is a website with other monuments dedicated to the German soldiers from Upper Silesia.

In another thread there is a mention of German military cemetery.

The controvercy was justified. We don`t need murderers` names in public area. E.g., Stalin name was carved out from Polish monuments 50 years ago.

And a new proposition for the rest of bearded philosophers:

Poland monument

PS. Nice German monument, btw.

Very nice. You can almost shake hands with him! :):):):)

Warsaw.

Nike, a monument to Warsaw heroes, a symbol engraved in a few generations` minds.

Such a bare breasted statue would be impossible in politically correct America or Britian.

Krakow goes first:

A monument to a faithful dog called Jock near Wawel Castle:

The story of a dog named Dzok is considered by some to be even one of the legends in Krakow. It tells the story of a dog - a black half-breed, whose owner died tragically of a heart attack in the near Rondo Grunwaldzkie. The dog was waiting for his master. Fed with the residents of Krakow, aroused surprise and sympathy. After about a year of waiting, let himself go out to the new owner, Maria Müller, the wife of Władysław Müller. The woman died in 1998, and the animal escaped and loitering in railway premises were killed under the wheels of a moving train.

One more, in a different climate

Aaah, another cult film!

Hydrozagadka (Polish: Hydro-puzzle) is a Polish superhero comedy film. During a summer heat wave, all the water in Warsaw is puzzlingly disappearing. Scientists secretly call upon As (Ace), a superhero who passes his days living as a mild-mannered engineer, to try to solve the mystery. The movie was ostensibly created as a Communist parody of the American ideals glorified in Superman and other superhero films, however Polish audiences instead felt the film humorously parodied aspects of Polish life under Communist rule, such as the many slogans for a "better life."[1]

Hydrozagadka premiered on April 30, 1971 on Polish television.[2]

Kutz, Sól ziemi czarnej. Pure deduction, never saw it.

Wonderful film, my cult one.

So many hateful comments on youtube.

Salt of the Black Earth (Polish: Sól ziemi czarnej) is a Polish historical film taking part during the Second Silesian Uprising.[1] It was directed by Kazimierz Kutz and released in 1970.[2][3] The film was selected as the Polish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 43rd Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.[4]

Here`s a scene at 3:00 about a young Silesian insurgent who observes the Polish landscape through a German telescope. I always cry when I watch it.

or this one about a Polish officer from Krakow who dies in combat after illegal crossing the border to aid Silesian insurgents, at 3:00.

History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

Thanks for input. I see you haven`t changed your views.

In 1917 Germans sent Lenin and his few accolades to tsarist Russia on a mission to ignite a bolshevik revolution and overthrow the Russian government. Lenin was successful in provoking the revolt which brought about incredible chaos in Russia. Thanks to it, one of major enemies of Poland was destabilised to such an extent that, together with Germany`s and Austria`s collapse, Poland was able to regain freedom.

Why did the Germans send Lenin back to Russia?

They sent Lenin back to Russia hoping that he would foment further revolutionary activity in Russia so that Russia would withdraw from fighting Germany in World War I. The February Revolution of 1917 had already taken place while Lenin was in Switzerland. Despite this revolution overthrowing the Tsar, the Provisional Government put in place of the Tsar was still committed to fighting Germany in the war. The Germans knew that most Russians wanted to end their involvement in the war, so the German High Command knew Lenin wanted Russia out of the war, so it sent Lenin back to Russia hoping he would lead another rebellion, take control and end Russia's hostilities with Germany. Lenin led the October Bolshevik Revolution and entered into the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with the Central Powers ending Russia's involvement in the war.

Looks like Czterdziestolatek, the part where Karwowski is going through the mid-life crisis and playing the guitar.

Yes!! 40 year old - my fav comedy series ever! Very intelligent humour.

Ok, two for you, one easy and one not so easy:

The first one is lieutenant Borewicz from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/07_zg%C5%82o%C5%9B_si%C4%99

And the other displays young Zamachowski. It is his first film from 1982 - Wielka majówka. Nice rock music soundtrack by Maanam - Zamachowski was enthralled with Kora!

Life / "Hej Sokoly" - song research [11]

hey I'm looking for as much possible information on this song as possible, I'm doing a project for a music theory class of mine,

Tell you one thing - whenever we go on holidays and are staying near a disco or club, this fekking song is always a number one. When Poles hear it, they virtually go crazy and drą mordy like hell and smash the disco into small pieces.

That is why whenever I hear it I go mad.

History / What Was Happening in Poland around 1905? [73]

What Was Happening in Poland around 1905?

Revolution, strikes, unrest, street fight.

The Revolution in the Kingdom of Poland (1905-1907) was a major part of the Russian Revolution of 1905 in Russian-partitioned Poland (see Congress Poland and Privislinsky Krai). One of the major events of that period was the insurrection in £ódź in June 1905. Throughout that period, many smaller manifestations, demonstrations and armed struggles between the peasants and workers on one side, and the government on the other, would take place. The demands of the demonstrators would include both the improvement of the workers living conditions, and political freedoms, particularly related to increased autonomy for Poland.

Genealogy / Bies ancestry [10]

Anyone ever heard of this Polish last name? Where did such families reside? What are some associations with the name?

In my childhood, my parents forced us (their kids) to go to the theatre with them. It was horrible. I remember we went to see the most boring plays, among them Biesy by Dostojewski.

Shyt, I am clever!:):):)

Or not?? :):):) I only googled: Polish black and white film, Satan, Heaven, Hell, angel. That`s all.

Congratulations ) I very much recommend watching it when you have a chance.

That is extremely interesting, I thought I knew every film made in Poland, at least by the title. Somehow, that one escaped me. I can`t believe it.

You've won the right to post the next one :)

OK, let`s continue the topic of Satan and angels.

News / Dirty deeds of foreign guys in Poland [98]

So far, so good.

The response of British true patriots is as it has been expected. Thanks, guys, for not disappointing me. :):):):)

An excellent Polish proverb comes to mind: Uderz w stół, a nożyce się odezwą. Strike the table and the scissors will resound.

Sorry, Delph, but the popular myth in conservative Krakow is that British stag party tourists are the biggest problem of all. :):):):)

Not only in Krakow.

In all worst-tourist rankings the British occupy the first places. Nations who host the British consider them loud, arrogant, sloven, always drunk and mean. Additionally, they don`t know any foreign languages, so they can`t communicate and commit multiple cultural blunders.
