News / PiS candidates are losing positions in EU Parliament. Will they keep power in Poland? [358]

anti- European PiS party in Poland are crying they are not getting important positions in EU Parliament after recent elections.

Getting back to the original idea. Another PiS candidate for the EU position is losing it.

Poland's nominee for agriculture commissioner, Janusz Wojciechowski, is set to face a second hearing after MEPs from the European Parliament's (EP) top political groups lambasted his "vague" performance on Tuesday (1 October).

@Philip 666

Of course, Phil. - you get a point.

So, Chemikiem has taken us to Wrocław and made me open the folder with photos:

What is this make and model which I used to drive a few decades ago?

The Golden Age came to its end at the beginning of the 17th century. Its final achievement was the occupation of Moscow by Polish troops which concluded with their defeat.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

Not sure why the other photo riddle thread was closed,

Simple - it got too big and started damaging the forum`s algorithm. But it wasn`t moved to Archive, it is still visible in my thread list.

Where can these figures be found, what are they, and who was the designer/sculptor?

Without googling: I remember this sad but beautiful monument from Wrocław, located in a small park. The theme is Katyń Massacre. As for the sculptor, I had to google him - Tchórzewski.

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

75 years ago insurgent Warsaw capitulated. See the film from the German newsreel.

After the capitulation and forced evacuation of the remaining population, Germans started to burn and blow up buildings which survived, one by one. That was pure malice and a personal revenge of Hitler on restive Poles.

Sigismund Bell, the largest one in Poland for many centuries, was hung up in Wawel Cathedral in 1521.

Do you know it is wrongly called Sigismund`s Bell?

Once we talked about idiom : from the great bell, meaning rare special events.

that raising the retirement age would ruin the country,

Lowering.
We shall see the results of it in a few years` time. ZUS (Social Security) increases its debt every year and the government has to cover it. One day it is going to turn out that the duvet is too short.

Could you perhaps provide an English translation of the following passage?

It is Lament No 8. Yes, it is a must on most school reading lists.

Check out that gutenberg site I provided:

Thou hast made all the house an empty thing,
Dear Ursula, by this thy vanishing.
Though we are here, 'tis yet a vacant place,
One little soul had filled so great a space.
For thou didst sing thy joyousness to all,
Running through every nook of house and hall.

[.....]

What year was this translation to English done?

That is a problem indeed coz the population is aging rapidly and such babcias and dziadkis will make the majority of voters in the future. They will vote for smart guys who promise more than others. PiS` today`s methods are only a prelude to what is going to happen.

What about the 1m electric cars?

Not one million till 2025, but 600.000 till 2030 - these are the latest changes.
Soon we will learn it is even fewer and later. Then we shall see one big zero. ):)

3. Golden Age

We briefly discussed Baptism and Kings/Queens before and now it is time to move to Golden Age which mostly took place in 16th century. Poland was doing well militarily (Moscow Duchy still too weak to pose a real danger), economically and culturally.

Jan Kochanowski`s poetry has been a great read till today, especially Laments written after the death of his little daughter, Urszulka.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laments_(Kochanowski)

Read their nice rendition into English here:

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

I have lived here for 30 years now - so don't require your permission to comment.

No, it wasn`t about a permission. I was just surprised you asked such a desperate question about pickled onions. Never mind.

You can buy pickled pigs feet in most large grocery stores

In Poland you can get only fresh feet called nóżki and use them for galareta/jelly dishes as maf already explained. But they contain little meat so recipes advise to add other kinds of pork, e.g, ham hock.

I disagree that the Church is supporting PiS

How would you have the foggiest idea since you're in Norway (or some other godforsaken shthole?)

Yes, Maf has summed you up well - you know little of contemporary Poland. It seems you don`t even read articles on Polish things. Too bad.

Check out:

And finally - conservative old Giertych warns Catholics not to vote for PiS coz it will entail the destruction of the Church.

News / PiS candidates are losing positions in EU Parliament. Will they keep power in Poland? [358]

So, the polls give PiS over 40%. They are bound to win the elections. Will they get enough votes to create a majority government? Or will they need to bribe the opposition MPs to join them?

On the other hand, will the opposition manage to get enough votes to outnumber PiS in the Parliament? If they do, will they be able to create the government?

Fascinating issues. I must admit I like this atmosphere of uncertainty.

Enjoy your "Polishness".

I really do. Therefore, I don`t visit British fora and complain that Brits don`t eat this or that. That would be so moronic. Do you get the point?

Don't you teach your students that there is a big wide world out there?

Yes, I do it. That is why, when they go to Britain, they won`t moan that Brits don`t eat this or that. :):) Do you get the point, Mr Expert on Polish Culture? hahaha

many (most?) Poles treat raw onions with suspicion, they can be used in small amounts in some salads

You are probably right, with one noble exception, namely me, who has eaten raw onion regularly and my liver is still doing well. It isn`t raw onion which is harmful, but fried one. Unfortunately, I also like it.

I'm also surprised that Polish people don't pickle eggs.

Admit now that you are mentioning them to make me puke again. :):)

I already talked about pickled eggs when linking to the film by that expat Polish chef. Pickled eggs are No 1 of most disgusting food in Britain on his list and he throws up the longest and heaviest of all after trying them.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

there is really no need for you to chip in with your

I will always chip in when people are at a loss about Polish things, like you. It is my job. Get used to it. :):)

chill out.

I am chilled out. It is you who seemed on the nervous breakdown because Poles don`t like pickled onions. Check out your own words.

I asked why Poles don't pickle onions. Maf answered my question

Yes, he did, but also without really referring to the Polish culture. So there I came and explained as it should be.

No. Those are not onions - they are shallots.

Aaa, you mean those small ones? Yes, indeed, I saw only them in shops.
What? So you expect Poles to pickle big onions??? Are you crazy??? :):) I think I will throw up now as I am eating Sunday dinner. How can Brits even take it into their mouths?

I have experienced plenty about Polish culture thank you very much.

No, the fact that you are making a big hallo about the lack of pickled big onions in Poland means you have experienced nothing. :))

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Now, why on earth have Poles never pickled onions?

It is funny you still don`t understand the Polish culture after so many years. Poles don`t need pickled onions coz they enjoy other pickled stuff, like cucumbers, peppers or mushrooms. Do Brits eat them? No, they prefer pickled onions. Very stupid of them, I must say. :):)

As for never in your post, never say never in the forum coz you are wrong. Pickled onions are available.

The only time I ever had pickled onions was when they were in with Polish pickled pigs feet.

Yes, they are good for decoration but eating them is a crazy idea. Yuk.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

The number of students and a number of available rooms do not change.

I hope you don`t use Maths at work coz if you count like that, you might bring about a little disaster to your surroundings. A few people have already explained to you that the number of students has doubled. Instead of 350.000, there are 700.000 high school students.

Why are you still so daft?

it is a fault of those who are responsible for it logistic.

And what can they do with the double intake but the same amount of classrooms, moron? Please be more civil when replying to other posters, this is not an off topic thread

Some schools hire extra rooms in neighbouring facilities. But it is not always possible.
