Life / Poland: worst teeth in the world? [98]

Look, I'm not being awkward teflcat and I have no expereince of Polish dentists myself but so far, we have:

True, Poles' teeth are not great, and there's a good reason for that. Either you can go to a Health Service dentist, who may or may not give you an anaesthetic, or you can go private. As I said, I paid 1000PLN for treatment and was happy to pay it, but for many people here that would seem an astronomical sum of money to pay 'just for teeth'.

The skill of Polish dentists is on a par with anything I've seen (felt) in the UK and elsewhere, but the prices for private dentistry are much lower here.

As others have said, it's up to the patient to look after their teeth. The poor old dentist just does the crash repairs.

Life / Poland: worst teeth in the world? [98]

Yes, it's possible but no evidence so far on this thread.

How could it be measured? I can offer only anecdotal evidence from my own experience. My dentist told me that in the summertime most of her patients are foreigners from Germany and Sweden. Health tourism is a fast-growing sector in PL. A while ago I helped a Kraków company with their brochure. They offer package holidays including operations and other medical procedures.

Well, you say they are good but then seem to go on to illustrate that they are cheap - not the same thing.

Why can't they be both good and cheap?

Life / Poland: worst teeth in the world? [98]

Funny. I hear the opposite regularly

In my experience Polish dentists are very good. A couple of years ago I needed to have a broken front tooth capped. My dentist suggested having both front teeth done, which made sense. After about ten long (well, they seemed long) sessions I paid 1000PLN for two porcelain caps and all the work. How much would that have been elsewhere?

A friend's husband was quoted 2000GBP for some dental work in the UK. He came here and had a good job done for 400PLN.

UK, Ireland / Polish immigrants in the UK - victims or criminals?! [243]

I am heading for PL soon and I promise to give "westerners" the same treatment they give you, if I only come across any of them. And I don't give a flying phuck how big or whatever they are since they are on my territory.

Your territory? I thought you were American. Anyway, how are you going to give us a hard time?

Work / Planning a move to Wroclaw (a company offers me a Gross salary of 4000 Polish Zloty) [23]

My company is offering me an opportunity to relocate and work in Wroclaw. They are offering me a Gross salary of 4000 Polish Zloty. I am married with a new born child.

You'd struggle on 4K gross. Your company seems not to have any realistic idea of what people need to live on here in Poland. Sure, there are families who live on less, but who wants to live in poverty? If I were you, I'd ask for 6k minimum or no go. Even on that income you'd hardly have a lavish lifestyle. Poland is not a cheap country anymore.

Life / Do you collect mushrooms in your country? Poles in Poland do. [79]

A giant fungus of the species Armillaria solidipes (honey mushrooms) in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon was found to span 8.9 km2 (2,200 acres),[4] which would make it the largest organism by area. Whether or not this is an actual individual organism, however, is disputed: some tests have indicated that they have the same genetic makeup,[5] but unless its mycelia are fully connected, it is a clonal colony of numerous smaller individuals. Becksi. Do you mean the tall thing near the right-hand corner of the building? What is it?

Real Estate / Building a house in Poland need advice from anyone that has built [100]

Check out Unibud. They offer a comprehensive service. Pretty impressive actually. You might be able to find their promo vid in English (I did the voiceover-my first one so mock ye not). The company offers a 30-year guarantee and can knock up a house faster than you can say knife. Personally though, what with the weather here and all, traditional building methods are best unless you need something really fast (and have a lot of money to spend-Unibud houses don't come cheap).

Pawian. Wow, I have never picked so many noble mushrooms on one day! ::):) Were they clean?

Most of them. We took the pic because it was an exceptionally good day!

Teffle. Incidentally, the other three of the safe four are, I think, morel, puffball and chanterelle.

Be careful when looking for morels (Morchella esculenta). There is a similar-looking one, Turban Fungus (Gyromitra esculenta) which can be fatal. Both are pretty much the same colour and have a similar stem, but The Turban Fungus looks a bit like a brain, while the morel is more honeycomb-like.

Pawian. Strange but I have never seen wild oyster mushrooms.

Look out for poplars at the side of the road which were felled a few years ago. Boczniak spread all over the stump and can be found at any time of the year.

Eurola: I never heard of anybody dying,
here in the states yes but in PL that is very common where folk croak from eating the ones that they shouldn't have. every year they make the news in the fall, when the PL mushroom picking season is.

According to a spokesman for the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate Jan Bondar, 80 people were treated in hospital last year for serious mushroom poisoning. Seven people died. Source: thenews.pl

In the autumn (fall, if you prefer) literally tens of thousands of people go mushrooming in a single day. Seven deaths is a very small number when you consider that each incident of poisoning probably affects several family members. When you consider the huge number of active mushroomers in Poland, the casualty rate is in fact astonishingly low, and is itself a tribute to Poles' knowledge of nature.

Species name - lejkowiec - funnel mushroom. Local name is cholewka - boot mushroom.

Would that be Lejkowiec dęty/Craterellus cornucopioides? Unfortunately, they don't grow (or don't grow in abundance) round our way (Podlasie). My wife says they need a chalky soil. Where are you?

Boczniak (Pleurotus ostreatus) are seldom picked around her; there just isn't a local tradition for collecting them. As a result, we are able to find lots of them, usually growing on the sawn stumps of poplars. Once we took three kilos from one stump. People buy them in the shops for quite a lot but don't think to just stop by the side of the road and pick them. These Oyster mushrooms fetch a very good price in western Europe. I wonder how they cultivate them there.

It has been another poor season for Chanterelles (Cantharellus cibarius) in our region. I'm looking forward to zielonki (Tricholoma equestre) season. For me they make the most wonderful soup as they keep a little al dente texture and have a lovely flavour. Now I'm salivating like a bloodhound.

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

no,she was still alive in this pic.

Oh, that was sooooo nasty. Funny, though.

I can't speak for women in all the world, but compared with English girls, who are nothing but dogs. The Polish women beat them hands down in every way possible

Are you serious, or just seriously deranged?

UK, Ireland / Why Poles will never belong in England [283]

duckey!) LOL

What strange expressions you use. I won't make a list as I'd be here for hours. Google if you need reminding that Britain has been punching above its weight for a thousand years, and the lists of scientists, writers, engineers, explorers, artists, etc, etc, etc, all from a small island, are very long.

UK, Ireland / Why Poles will never belong in England [283]

The funny thing is that this nasty little tick thinks he is superior because he was born in England. So was I and I am happy to come from one of the most mixed population groups in the world. I'd love some of these supremacist little-Englanders to have their genes tested. They'd find out how ethnically mixed they are.

Some of the other posters are just as bad. This ENGLISHMAN creature is not typical of the people of England, who are amazingly tolerant and good-humoured. Lyzko, you surpass yourself every day. You really don't want a list of great Britons, do you?

Since when has a guest been able to create a thread? That's just rolling out the red carpet for trolls. Weren't they welcome enough already?

News / Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash [859]

Some would believe it was all the fault of the Russians whatever evidence were produced. It's a question of "I want this to be true; therefore it is true". Something to do with"faith" I suppose. The President's putting on the pressure wasn't the only factor, but it was a significant one.

Feedback / I love this forum - It's so Polish: tolerant, inconsistent, amusing [252]

Nomad. For example, I wrote the word "monarchy" once or twice on serious British forums, bammm, it didn't take a day or two for them to ban..

Once or twice? Come come, Nomad, I bet you banged on about the monarchy ad nauseum just like you do here. I was a life-long republican before I started reading your stuff. Now there's a thought. Is Nomad a subtle monarchist agent-provocateur?

Food / What's your favorite Polish coffee? [73]

Pip quoted. LavaAzza is good

It certainly is but the price is insane. Kristine doesn't need to bring any equipment when she comes here; it's not that bad! Kronung is as good at it gets for a reasonable price.
