Genealogy / Help me find my cousins from Rybnik [25]

Local estate agents are next to hopeless IMO. I could elaborate if anyone is interested?

I am! Why don't you register and start a new thread? I'm sure the forum would find it very interesting. I know I would :)

Genealogy / Help me find my cousins from Rybnik [25]

I belonged to a polish American Catholic church my whole life.

We have similar histories bt I hate to disappoint you bt Rybnik is not my surname. It is, however, the name of a small town in the Poland's Upper Silesia province. My father's family is from there. You should look up your name!

News / History lessons no more in Poland (Tusk's change) [61]

In Poland Tusk's government implemented change in schools in Poland. Reducing number of history lessons to almost non existence.
What do you think ?

How does the saying go? "If you don't know where you've been, you won't know where you're going".

Life / Jerzy Kosinski - Polish author and liar [127]

And are you suggesting that no Pole during the six years of the war committed a single crime; no robberies, rape or informing for personal gain?

Of course those things went on. But some of the scenes he depicts are so outlandish and so beyond the pale, that one has to deduce that his aim, in those instances, was to sensationalize. He did it to the detriment of the Polish character as a whole. And for that the media did not take him to task (they glorified him).

News / Communist era 'newspeak' appeals the most to Poland PiS supporters (what a surprise) [89]

only remember soldiers in trucks driving there and here, and my family was scared

We were scared also.... Initially. Then it became much looser - the curfews that is. I remember plenty of times returning to my apartment at midnight, 1, 2am passing soldiers on the street! No one bothered me. Maybe it was a Wroclaw thing. I don't know.

better still talk to some Polish people (shock horror.. oh look, he is talking to the natives)

I was studying Medicine in Wroclaw during this time. I can tell you this much. The predominant opinion of the Polish students that I hung out with and their parents was that the General had no other choice. They all agreed that the alternative scenerios were not attractive ones.

you're showing everyone why PiS must be kept firmly in opposition.

I was in Poland during the last election (actually went to a polling station with my family and fed the ballot into the box). My cousin was so worried that PiS might win. He's a business owner. When PO won he was ecstatic! I'll never forget the look of sheer relief on is face. He told me that PiS would make it very hard for him to do business. I never asked him how PiS would do that.

Also interesting that Polonia so strongly supports PiS, presumably they also swallow 'newspeak' unquestioningly.

Here in New Jersey there is a Polsat news program that comes on "free TV" every night at 11 pm. There lead-off stories are usually chruch and/or Kaczynski-related and their interview piece is always with a member of PiS..........I'm unclear as to how the non-Polish speaking Polonia gets influenced.

News / Polish People STILL denied US Entry [96]

This visa thing was a very sensitive topic for my cousin. I was embarrased. When I asked him if he would come to visit me this summer he replied "Why? Your government won't give me a visa anyway"............He's got his own business and he's 50 years old. I think he'd get one.

Travel / Your best memory after visiting Poland [41]

It was the summer of '78 and the place was Kraków's Wisła. A group of us took a riverboat ride up-river. The destination: a monestary. The sky was a deep blue and the temp warm ,dry and very comfortable. We set off from the foot of Wawel Castle. One of the girls was playing guitar - Cat Stevens' "Father and Son" I recall. The water was placid. There was no river traffic to speak of. We were it! Five minutes into our trip cold Okocims(back then they were delicious) materialized and we pounced.

Forty-five minutes later we arrived at our destination. All I remember is that the monestary was well-protected by trees and very old. The other is the sound of a bird I never knew existed. I heretofore thought it was a mere fabrication - a bajka.

While waiting on the riverbank for the others I heard the call of a cukoo bird! That sound has been etched into my accoustic memory forever. It was a perfect moment: the sun, the QUIET, the beer and...."cukoo, cukoo".

I'd love to take my daughter there.

News / Polish prosecutor 'shoots self after news conference' [93]

But then military does try to discourage thinking.

Exactly! This was his way of falling on a live grenade to save his buddies. in his mind he's saving the military prosecutor's office from the civilians.

News / Polish prosecutor 'shoots self after news conference' [93]

I just heard the telephone statement he made to reporters from his hospital bed. He sounds way too coherent, way too in control; his thoughts very cogent for somebody who had ostensibly nothing to live for. Most survivors of a true suicide attempt are angry that they failed. He sounded as if he was very relaxed and content with himself.........That's just me.
