Love / How do Polish men feel about gender equality? [780]

Women tend to take on average lower paid jobs than men - especially in non educated positions. A female secretary, social worker, day care center worker, assistant, waitress, etc. will make less money than a male welder, construction worker, plumber, etc. In the same positions, women get paid around the same though.. a waitress makes the same as a waiter. All the women working in customer service, sales, accounting, etc all make the same wages as the men - they all start at the same salary for said position and increases marginally based on experience, aptitude, etc. Of course a woman in PR, HR, or in a secratarial position is going to make less than a regional sales manager, financial analyst, programmer (most people in IT are overwhelmingly men - it doesnt mean average salaries are like way higher for male programmer than female though) A female lawyer and male lawyer will make roughly the same as well. The whole 'wage discrimination' thing for the most part is bs...

Where it does exist though quite a lot is in asia and its more based on race. There's stories of black English teachers from US going to S Korea or China and being told straight up we wanted a white American/brit to teach English, not a black one...

News / Tusk turning his back to idea about Intermarium (New Commonwealth), seeing only EU as future for Poland [124]

Poland weren't offered a loan. They asked for it - back in 2009 and were granted a credit facility

Which they took as a safety measure since they had no clue how the 2008-2009 world crisis would fold out. They didn't pull out a PENNY hence owe NOTHING for it. They were offered the loan again to which they said NO THANKS IMF SHARKS!

It's actually props to PO too for running the country pretty decently back then. This is a Polish victory, not just a PiS one.

rt.com/business/406827-poland-rejects-imf-cash
reuters.com/article/us-poland-economy-imf/poland-to-quit-9-2-billion-precautionary-imf-credit-line-finance-ministry-idUSKBN1CJ0SK

They never said anything about EU funds - stop exaggerating.

They will get increasingly authoritarian and less interested in keeping Jo Public happy and then the intention to Polexit the EU will be announced.

If they insist on Poland lowering our safety standards and making poles work to feed foreigners who refuse to assimilate and live off benefits and having to deal with terror attacks and all sorts of other awful crimes and problems, polexit is preferable. Most Poles don't want to leave the EU. We love it as an economic union. But we don't want political interference in our home affairs and be told how to certain things in sensitive areas of Poland and its economy, politics, etc. We don't mind 99% of EU directives and apply them faithfully.

Language / Polish language would look better written in Cyrillic Script? [212]

@Wulkan

Exactly. Meaning cross cultural ties between the tribes and fiefdoms of pre 966 Poland and the years say plus or minus 100-200 year (kievan rus was founded before poland actually). Amber was exported from the baltic areas esp northern pl in a line running from early Russian settlement up north, through the 3 lil Baltic states, into Poland and southward onto the Kievan rus and then southward to Rome's new civilization and the Byzantine. If any sort of Cyrillic was used in Poland it would've been most likely in like a religious book, treaty, or some icon of Catholicism

@Wulkan

The ones who would remain and started speaking proto-Slavic languages in the future, yes I'd consider them Slavs, Sarmations, etc each of whom carved out its little territory, languages changed, etc. Were talking mainly about post collapse of ancient Rome - 2k years ago, outward spread 200-300 ad during turmoils, sacks by Goths, Visigoths, Franks, perhaps even some Slavs and East Prussian trubes, years ago, Romes gradual rebuild with Christianity (you have to remember the from the spread of Christianity even till like 100-200 ad it wasn't all that accepted. Israel was a Roman colony afterall back in Jesus' time. 1k years ago being baptism and 'formal' Poland. Not tens of thousands of years ago when people lived in Africa, caves, much in Sumer, Egypt, Iran Turkey etc. and those areas later on, etc.

There was no Poles in 833 - 907.

Not true. Poland wasn't baptized and turned into a confederation of kingdoms of sorts under the banner of Christianity till 966. There were plenty of Polish (Lechtic) tribes and usch before that. Quite a few resisted Catholicism and remained pagan. Naturally, due to the Kievan Rus' proximity and the amber trail there would've been cross culture contact with the Orthodox neighbors to the south and east.

Not that I bothered to look up hence my use of the word 'may'
Every pole knows that the Latin text has been used since the founding of the nation. If some lil group of Orthodox decided to use their native Cyrillic in one instance or othrr im not saying it never happen (like that wiki link posted earlier) but it would've been a tiny tiny minority.

The only polish that may have been written in cyrillic would perhaps by a small Orthodox community. If you go back 500 years to say the Commonwealth years the vast majority of texts, books, legal treaties, wood cuts, etc will be in Latin text. Poland has always looked westward and towards Rome not the east and Orthodoxy, save for maybe a small orthodox population.

Life / Price of cigarettes in Poland? [192]

Life / Price of cigarettes in Poland? [192]

a pack of Marlboro will cost me there than in Poland

Depends where in Chicago. In downtown, you can pay as much as $15. Anything in Cook County where ohare is located (the county in which Chicago lies along with numerous suburbs surrounding it) is going to be around the $13-$16 mark, actually I don't even think $13 would be enough but $14-$15 yes. Idk as I never buy cigs in cook county due to their price. If I run out at work I'll just bum one or two or even buy a cheap cigar to hold me over till I can get back home. No sense in paying 2x 3x as much for a product because of a stupid county line.

From Ohare you can take a 20 or so minute drive north of the airport in Lake County and cigs there are around $6-$7 depending on what you smoke, where you buy it, etc. You can also go west of the airport to get out of cook county, but not east or south - pretty much anything east of south within an hour's drive of the airport is all cook county... or as we like to call it crook county due to our democrat politicians constantly going to prison. As long as you're not buying cigs in cook county meaning you're buying in mchenry, lake, kendall, etc. you'll pay $6, $6.50, maybe a bit over $7 if you like Newport menthols which tend to be the most expensive

There are certain websites you can also order cigs for around $30 a carton online which comes out to $3 a pack. A lot of these websites I noticed are hosted in Sweden. Idk what the legality is behind it but generally if you order something illegal/untaxed they'll simply just confiscate it esp if its just a few cartons of cigs... but if you got like a kilo of coke in mail from Columbia and they find it (which honestly there's a good chance they wont due to the sheer amount of mail) they'll most likely deliver it as normal only to have a swat team arrest you as soon as its delivered and you take it in the house. On the other hand, it is unconstitutional for mail to be opened (4th amendment against unlawful search and seizure) of mail going from one state/city/etc in us to another... without a warrant anyway.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

I should've clarified yes it's if you make below a certain amount. I don't think though the 500 plus program has an income maximum for 2nd child and beyond though does it?

@Roger5

Welfare and child payments for extra children are two different things. Unlike the US system, Poland encourages that families stay together while the US system pretty much makes it so the father isn't present in the home. Also, unlike the US system, if someone is on welfare/unemployment in PL they actually have to look for work and it is checked up on unlike the bogus us system.

There's a famous story of a Japanese woman in UK was threatened with deportation despite being married to a Polish man. Anyway, in it she describes how they wanted her to pay back over 5k pounds in child support from the government... and this is despite that her husband is working

At least someone gets it...

Hopefully the program of 500 zl a kid encourages birth rates. If you have 3 kids, you get not only 1,500 zl (not a small sum by PL standards esp in the east) but also like a big stipend for an apartment.

Thankfully Poles were wise enough to at least take in people from a similar culture, religion, etc to address the labor shortage, aging population, and so on. We've taken in essentially just as many migrants (over 1 million) as Germany yet we've had no terror attacks - people being blown up, mowed down with vans, shot up with AKs, etc.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

I believe in God and the 10 commandments. There's several examples in the bible against using 'anti-contraceptives' of sorts (an example includes jacking off before 'laying' with your wife). If I was in a situation though where I got a girl pregnant I didn't intend to marry idk what I'd do. I'd respect her decision would prefer to keep the child and even put it up for adoption if we're both unready to get married and take care of the kid. Luckily, I've never had to make such a decision.

Abortion is apparently the largest killer of black babies. There's quite a few billboards on the eways around my area advertising this.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

Ah okay, I thought it was just a one time payment and that's it. That's how I read your earlier post. If the state is going to help the child out more so that they're not aborted prior to birth I can see that being a positive then. But a single $1k payment with no further support would hardly make it worth it..

Generally, I'm pro-women's rights as far as the politics of abortion are concerned. Nonetheless, I feel that it's way overused. If abortion is expanded in PL, I just hope that people aren't going to use it as a crutch. I don't want women, or even men for that matter, to think why use a condom if I can just get an abortion if I'm going to get pregnant.

Nonetheless, the parties that often push for things like abortion, gay rights, etc. often due it because of a grander idea of population control. Of course there's going to be people in those groups who generally care about this cause or that. I'm all for gay people at least being protected and having access to medicine, jobs, etc. without being discriminated. My bother is more that many gays are way too open about something that should be left in the bedroom. I like doing certain kinky things with my girlfriend, but I'm not going to marching dressed like a sex doll or latex or leather costume demanding greater recognition for people with this or that fetish. Sex is left for the bedroom.. and this pushing of a pro-gay agenda which 1%, and at most 5% people participate in, shouldn't constantly bombard young children. Now in the US and even parts of EU in many schools esp if the teacher is liberal will teach very young children, even 7 8 years old whatever about homosexuality. One such indicident was rather famous in Canada as the kindergarten/1st grade teacher openly admitted she was pushing a pro-gay agenda on 7 year olds... That's what I'm against. Idc who someone marries, but leave the type of sex you have for the bedroom not the classroom. Also, don't force it down peoples' throats. If someone wants to live according to principles where they believe marriage is between man and woman, respect our values and opinion - just as we respect your values and opinions.

@Chemikiem

That's pretty bogus IMO. 4K pln payment to take care of a child with disabilities is nothing. I think that abortion has been overused in the West, but nonetheless I look at it as a necessary evil. There's a lot of situations where condoms break or things happen and imo a child is generally better off being raised in a family that planned ahead.

Is the morning after pill legal in Poland? Is it over the counter (or basically like with pharmacists' permission) like in US?

News / Poland's deputy minister Szmit resigns due to fatal road accident statistics... [11]

@Roger5

I had several similar experiences, both driving and being a passenger. My cousin who I hang out with the most is studying to be a vet, is a vegetarian and a huge animal lover. One time we hit a wild dog and he insisted on taking it with us. He nursed it back to health and the dog still lives with him. He's partially blind though and the accident messed up his stomach or digestive tract and he can't really poop on his own. My cousin will literally put on gloves and like pull the poop from out of him... now that's devotion to animals lol.. and that's just one of 8 or so that are at his house. They even have their own area in like the basement where he puts them in at night or when it rains.

One time in the the mid/late 90s' I was driving with my aunt and her husband in a little Fiat Cinquento that were very popular back then. We were driving through super thick fog and super slow. Well, as we were driving the usual route from wroclaw to the suburbs and towns around it, there was a bicyclist who was clearly in the cars' lanes. We hit him but fortunately he just got some scratches and refused any medical help. It could have ended way way worse though.

Idk I don't think I can ever get use to like driving in Poland. There's just way too much going on at once and my nerves and adrenaline run like crazy especially when driving around Wroclaw, Gdansk, etc. It's not so bad in the smaller towns but still you have to constantly like monitor the roads and make sure nothing suddenly pops out - especially around blind corners and turns.

One merely could look at the sides of the roads and count the crosses to realize how unsafe driving in PL is.

The driving is flat out scary in some parts of Poland. I have a car there I use whenever I come visit (primarily for road trips) but I still prefer to take cabs especially in the city or have my cousin drive. Driving outside of the cities isn't as scary if you're driving slow but the roads can still be bad and you never know when some dog, tractor, or something else is going to pop up driving through the wioski.

Law / Polish Husband Left me for another Woman / Abandoning his Wife [7]

It sounds like you're pretty much screwed... Imo I'd go back to Korea if I were you and get the divorce taken care of there. You won't be able to do that in PL, UK, etc. if you're marriage certificate is from Korea and you never did the proper paperwork there. Your English is excellent and you can easily get a job teaching English there or if you have another skill/education in something else focus on that. Most important thing imo is to just move on and forget about him. Take it as a tough learning experience...Be thankful you guys don't have kids - then it'd be a big problem. I'm sure you'll find a guy that will respect and cherish you in the future.

@Harry

A couple of halal joints doesnt mean poland has a large muslim population. Compared to the overall population there are very very few. Warsaw as the capital will have more than the other cities. Nonetheless the number is still far smaller than other w euro cities like paris London brussels. You'll never see dozens upon dozens of dudes w huge beards or ninja women like you would in western eu. I'd say there probably isn't more than 100k Muslim residents/citizens in Poland - 30k lipkas 30k 40k Chechens, rest from north Africa/middle east. Most of the Muslims in Poland are well assimilated and don't cause problems. You don't see Muslims establishing sharia courts, massacring locals, walking w signs calling for sharia and death to those who insult Islam like in w Europe.

That is correct. Average people are making like $250 $300 or so a month in Minsk. A person making over $1k a month would be considered wealthy in Belarus while in Poland such a salary would be on the low/lower middle end in the cities. In the rural parts people may make as little $100-$200 a month.

It's really not all that much cheaper than Poland. Like if you shop at the markets for food it'll be slightly cheaper than Poland or roughly the same price (much cheaper than Germany though for things like food, drink, etc.) but many imports are even more expensive than PL, Germany, etc. From what I understood from speaking with one of the locals is that they live in their commie style bloki rent fee although who actually owns the flat is murky. Anyway they pay like a small tax to the government each month for living there. I think this is a vestige leftover from when USSR broke up and things were privatized. I can't really recall because you'd have to take like several millions rubles on just a trip to the supermarket or mall and again this was like 2 years ago when I went.

Downtown Minsk itself is very clean, safe, homogenous with cops patrolling on every corner and has tons of modern amenities like any western city - shopping malls, luxury cars, western goods, theaters, sports arenas, etc. However, go a bit outside of minsk and everything is gray and poverty stricken.

@Alltimegreat1

No, none just about everyone was local with the exception of a handful of central asians, poles, Russians and some french italians that came to trade. This was around the time Russia took over Crimea and was sanctioned. Im willing to bet now its mainly just locals n a few russians and central asians. Back then European goods were brought to Belarus by truck convoys, relabeled as Belarussian goods, and resold to Russia at a 300-500% or more markup.

All the locals and russians or asians I came in contact with spoke some dialect of Russian and the W and Central Europeans who came to trade would hire a translator (usually an English/Russian speaker) for like $10 a day.

Most the immigrants in Poland are from Ukraine and a small amount from the rest of Europe. There's an increase in Indians that work in it or study in our unis but they're generally alright and don't cause n e issues plus they contribute to the economy. There's very few Muslims or blacks aside from the occasional tourist, student, small biz owner, etc
