News / Tesco abandon Poland [66]

Good for you.

What did you think of Tesco stores in Poland or wherever else? Did you do any shopping there?

Study / Medicine study - good Polish University for international students; study in English? [38]

I heard mixed reviews on the school.

Heard or read?

I am reading some now and critical comments sound like this:
I do not recommend doing your Erasmus placement in Warsaw if you study medicine (I don't know about the other courses). My explanation is very simple: the department demands far too much from the students, so much more than in Spain.

erasmusu.com/en/erasmus-warsaw/erasmus-experiences/do-you-study-medicine-dont-go-to-warsaw-422711

That is of course a ridiculous approach coz traditionally medical unis in Poland are places for extremely hard-working students. That is one of the reasons Poland lacks so many doctors - very few people are able to finish such a hardcore course.

News / Presidential elections 2020 - your opinions about campaign, candidates [2222]

The number that I've been stating all along - 42% - appears to be the magic number in the 1st round.

The emotions are so hot and high that any guessing about results might be heavily flawed. I am going to wait and see what happens. I will accept any results on condition they are not rigged by PiS. I know those neobolshevik gangsters are ready to do everything to get their President.

Life / Neighbours complaining about Barbecue - what is the law in Poland? [21]

They built a garage 3 metres from our fence which we didn't object to, I know I could of.

If their garage`s door or windows face your fence, it should be 4 metres. If they don`t, 3 metres is enough. There are still exceptions to it (length of the garage) which allow to build such structures within 1.5 metre or less from the border.

One can read about it here
muratordom.pl/prawo/porady-prawne/odleglosci-na-dzialce-budowa-budynku-gospodarczego-aa-3giE-QHWs-osBy.html

They have told me I cannot use this as it could stain their paint on the wall of the garage.

Well, there is no such direct law but if the damage appears, they might demand compensation, indeed.

I do pity you coz you gained lousy nitpicking neighbours.

History / Origin and meaning of Polish city names? [3]

Warszawa, Kraków, Lublin, Rzeszow, Katowice, Gdynia, Elk, Suwałki and Toruń.

Kraków comes from Krak, a legendary ruler who started the settlement.

Gdynia comes from the root word gъd which means wet, swampy.

Katowice probably comes from Kat, the first settler or owner of a smithy.

Lublin comes from the male first name Lubla which in turn originates from Lubomir.

Rzeszów comes from the male first name Rech, Rzesz or Rzetysław.

Suwałki is a Lithuanian word which means a wet, swampy place.

Ełk probably comes from the name of a local river - Łyk.

Language / Am I the only person that can't sing in Polish at all? [48]

speaking and singing are separate skills...

If you say so, it must be true. Now I will know.

the only cast member that audiences could understand was the only non-native speaker

Very interesting.

In pop music it's very obvious that many native-speaker singers have diction problems while singing in English.

Thanks, now I know why I have such problems with understanding lyrics in some songs, not only my fav metal and hard rock but also pop etc. I even developed a sort of complex over it.

Love / What to do for my PL girlfriend on her name day? [6]

Get her some flowers, a box of chocolates and a card

Yes, that`s traditional approach which is always appreciated.

Somebody might be more adventurous, though. There are hundreds of possibilities.

E.g., a mug with personalised inscription:

I am generally a good girl. It is people`s fault I feel unnerved.

Language / Am I the only person that can't sing in Polish at all? [48]

When I sing in English, every word flows properly and when I sing in Polish, I feel like I lost it.

That is a sort of mystery, indeed, especially that you speak fluent Polish as your mother tongue.

Life / Is Polish church involved in politics too much? [137]

There is an interesiting article by Terlikowski in today's Rzeczpospolita

Yes, I have been reading this Catholic journalist`s articles about the Church and the ones in which he warns the bishops are quite numerous.

Same people are talking smack or spew nonsense. Nothing new, as they say nihil novi sub sole.

Not only, Sir. The warnings are issued both by laypeople but also those Catholic activists like Terlikowski and even priests themselves. Check out those articles about priests who are critical of Church`s policy.

natemat.pl/165687,ksiadz-pisze-list-do-nuncjusza-w-ktorym-krytykuje-upolitycznienie-kosciola-sa-bledy-ktorych-nie-da-sie-ukryc

plus.dziennikpolski24.pl/ksiadz-wieslaw-przyczyna-trzeba-bic-na-alarm/ar/c1-14419339

Not a good situation, as it leads directly to what happened in Spain and Ireland.

Why not?

News / Tesco abandon Poland [66]

BB, I must say I pity them but I don`t pity the company. It was the worst retail chain I have ever used. Whenever I went there, I felt uneasy. Not because of prejudice of mine, no, you know I like Germans. But the atmosphere inside the shop was strange. The same with Lidl nowadays- that black decor they introduced last year makes me feel sick. There are two Lidl stores in close vicinity but I visit them only when I have to . Sorry to say it, but I think those German businessmen don`t know how to make a place look friendly.

Look below, black outside and inside. Yes, I know black is considered elegant but to me it is really depressing.

Work / Hands-on agricultural jobs in Poland? [20]

Yes, that`s what it was like 10, 15 years ago - I remember reading reports describing such cases and they were widespread.

Now Poland is richer than it was around 2004 so the wages had to grow, like everything else. Such farming labour mostly concerns Ukrainian workers and it`s good they started to demand better conditions at last. I can pay more for strawberries which aren`t picked by slave workers.

Life / Is Polish church involved in politics too much? [137]

Some people accuse the RC Church in Poland of being engaged in politics more that it should. The clergy are said to support and favour rightwing politicians, especially the ones who rule Poland nowadays. Critics point to dozens of cases of such support openly declared by local priests or bishops, during masses and on other occasions. That can be easily found on the net.

The latest example which raised doubts or even annoyance is today`s appearance and speech by one of government ministers at the end of mass service at Jasna Góra, broadcast nationally.

wiadomosci.onet.pl/kraj/wybory-prezydenckie-2020-jadwiga-emilewicz-przemawia-na-jasnej-gorze-komentarze/ywxqe4s

Do you consider it a problem or not? Is the involvement too big or not? Is it going to affect the position of the Church? How? Will it influence the number of believers in any way? How? What should be done with it: leave it like that or fight it?

Yes, an interesting issue: are private farmers who hire people on piecework basis required to provide minimum wage which is now around 15 zlotys/hour AFAIK ?

Travel / Fortune Tellers/ Astrologers in Warsaw [27]

I say to my clients (all of them):

Reminds me a cartoon by Andrzej Mleczko - a fortune teller looks into the ball and tells the client: you are around 40 with receding blond hair.

Do some Polish people visit fortune tellers?

My mum went to one many years ago. After a long time of separation, she was desperate to know if she would see me again. The teller told her she wouldn`t. Then a few weeks later I arrive and reunite. We met the fortune teller in the streets of Greenpoint later on and she was really flabbergasted seeing me.

My advice: don`t use fortune tellers in NYC. They are swindlers.

Work / Hands-on agricultural jobs in Poland? [20]

Are there hands-on agricultural jobs in Poland where you can pay your rent?

Yes, farmers always need workers. But they pay peanuts for drudgery in the field.

A good article though in Polish

News / Presidential elections 2020 - your opinions about campaign, candidates [2222]

The topic of presidential elections has been undergoing kaleidescope-like shifting recently.
Definitely it has been a good move to replace Kidawa Błońska with Trzaskowski. I don`t want to sound chavinistic but it seems he has bigger balls than her. :):) And that`s a must in the Polish politics right now coz I read an interview with a psychologist who claimed that both Poles and Polesses prefer a male president. For the time being..... :):)

News / Tesco abandon Poland [66]

After French GEANT and German REAL, it is the third retailer that is closing up its business here.

I must say I liked going there. I appreciated their 24/7 approach and used to do shopping there regularly once a week. I liked the friendly decor and vast spaces. The selection was very decent.

But it was about 10 years ago and some things have changed since then. The nearest Tesco hypermarket is 8 km away from my place, while Auchan and Carrefour only 2 km. It is natural I prefer a shorter distance.

Besides, Auchan has had a better pricing policy and it matters to me coz I am frugal with shopping. Carrefour gives 20% discount on shopping - 10% for big familes and credit card users respectively. I am not sure if Tesco had any discounts like that.

This future Poland below is prettier: it is Warsaw, of course. Check how St Alexander`s Church will evolve:

Exactly,. you put it out of my mouth. Of course it won`t.
That is why I am already working on designing my holographic image which I am going to use one day when such technology is widespread.

I am wondering which one to choose coz there are a lot of options. I need an attractive one to draw my students` attention.

Life / What is Poland going to be like in the 2050s? [72]

The biggest challenge is to reverse the demographic situation.

Exactly. But it requires a lot of education. We need to teach young conservative males to treat women with proper respect. Then, respected females will bear 3,4 kids each and the Polish race will thrive.

Fortunately, I am aware of the seriousness of the situation and am doing my part of education in my job - I enlighten my male students how to respect their female peers and not only.

Slowly, slowly, we will teach them all.
Don`t thank me, it is my duty which I do with pleasure.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

And is terrified of strangers.

Yes, that`s American complex.

they right after you throw the first punch they pull a 9 out of their waist band

You got me wrong, darling. I was talking about European context. No firearms involved. Do you think a criminal will have a chance to resist a punch from my battle axe which is hanging on the wall in my room?

They'd like Warsaw to look like Dubai.

When you choose a good spot, the photo you take resembles the beginnings of Dubai a little. :):)

The sooner we accept that, the better so we can stop panicking and go back to our normal daily activities.

Who knows if you aren`t right?

I saw one story that suggested that Szumowski had convinced both Morawiecki

Maf, you saw this story here:
https://polishforums.com/news/presidential-elections-opinions-campaign-85472/16/#msg1733048

PiS is spending so much time and effort on making May 10 elections happen

The latest rumour: no elections on 10th May, but in August/September.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

Oh, yes, you are. Ball-less, spineless,

No, it is Americans who are fekking cowards. They want to get a gun and then shoot from a safe distance to avoid seeing too much blood. Wimps! How about close fight in which you smash criminal`s head into pieces so that you can see his brain splattered on the floor under your feet? Ams wouldn`t be able to do that, they are too weak. Where is American masculinity? Gone with the Fekking Wind??
