what do people in Poland do with lamb legs?

I can't imagine. I'm keeping a close eye on them in case they halve the price. To be fair to Lidl, you can pay 15 GBP/kg for fresh lamb in the UK.

dolno, if you're ever round our way, my mother-in-law keeps ducks. They're free-range and very tasty. You could find someone local who keeps them, of course.

leg of lamb next time

I saw British half legs in Lidl last week. I can't remember the price exactly, but I do remember uttering the name of Jesus and his parents.

any indigenously Irish Christmas customs

My mother always put a candle in the front window to burn overnight on the Eve. It's a wonder that the curtains didn't catch, now I think about it.

And what if anything, do other non-Poles miss at Christmas time?

As a teenager I used to like standing at the back of the church with the sturdy fellas who were there to deter passing drunks from disrespecting midnight mass in heathen London. You'd always get a few lads shouting a bit of mockery, and we'd stare them down menacingly. It was a kind of right of passage when you'd be expected to man the door rather than just being tolerated.

I always thought midnight mass, with the carols, was much more enjoyable with a little anti-freeze taken beforehand. The Polish custom of not drinking on Christmas Eve has always struck me as a little excessive.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [425]

It used to be a lot more common. When you have building work done you have to establish a no booze rule before you start work. That way they can't complain if you kick them off the job. We never had any problems when building our place, and on a hot day I'd happily reward the boys with a cold one. You just have to get things clear at the start.

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

Poland will never be at peace until these ghosts are gone. Everyone except hardcore PiS fans is utterly sick of the sight of Jarek and his ilk. The prof is right, PiS won fair and square, but their post-election behaviour is worrying those who fear for Poland's young and fragile democracy.

News / Throwing away the constitution in Poland? [626]

If PiS raised Zus to 1100, hundreds of thousands of self-employed would give up. It's hard enough now for sole traders; a rise like that would kill a lot of them. Politicians haven't got a f**king clue.

So what's your figure, mr "reasonable person" ?

As a reasonable person I'm waiting for objective data. But I can see there are more than 8 thousand people in the drone film.

Aren;t there computer programs that can accurately count the number of people? I seem to remember it being done at the million man march in Washington.

7-8 thousand people

How could a reasonable person come up with that figure after seeing this footage?

jon, I hope you are not suggesting that they took the opportunity of a trip to the capital to do a bit of shopping instead of supporting the Party of God? That would be toooo funny.

Travel / Caught on photo radar on Poland's road - how long for a speeding ticket to arrive? How to pay? [14]

I insisted about the light was not red

This is one of the reasons why I have a dash cam. Two weeks ago I was driving home in late afternoon Friday traffic when cops stopped me for not stopping at a pedestrian crossing when they had done so (they were going in the same direction as me, on the nearside). I would argue that it was a close call, and they might have been trying to trap me - they braked very suddenly - but it is possible that when they saw my dash cam they thought twice about fining me. Of course if could be that they were just really nice cops.

Life / Moving to Poland and not drinking vodka [27]

roade85. One guy goes along with the crowd and gets pressurized into drinking vodka when he doesn't want to. Another guy says, "No thanks, I'll stick to beer. I want to do stuff tomorrow." He sticks to his word and watches amused as the others deteriorate into drooling apes. Who's the real man? By the way, women will notice, in a good way. Another thing. Why mix in those circles anyway? Civilized people wouldn't judge you negatively because you refuse to poison yourself.

I'll happily stand corrected if you can quote a reliable source that can show that the majority of young people who voted voted for PiS.

Feedback / Is it Polish forum or foreign forum? [159]

aka the 4Bs!

aka the 4Bs.

Doesn't seem to be catching on, does it, Polonius. Try harder. btw, you are an AA.

Come on Johnny do not chase them away. I believe you could :)

Care to bet on that? Johnny is the one one who provides the comedy here.

Everyone seems to get along with the Polish posters here except the Brit Bullies.

The purpose of this forum is not for Americans to get along with each other. It is to provide a forum in which Polish issues (not American gun fetishes, etc.) can be discussed.

I guess it's just you against the world, then. Good luck with the court case. Show them what a real Pole can do.

Ktos, you are absolutely right. Who the hell to these people think they are? Some of them don't even live in Poland!

word of honour still means much

Among Polish tradesmen (plumbers, builders, electricians) it means absolutely nothing.
I'd say sense of humour on the plus side, and not accepting responsibilty for mistakes/blaming others on the negative.
