Life / Popular Polish blog and chat sites [65]

Have a look at czateria.pl. I haven't been there for a few years but they had a lot of chat rooms all in Polish.

News / Nazi gold train 'found in Poland' [90]

It's only fair that they should get a percentage. And the rest to the heirs of original owners if traceable individuals and the government for the rest. If it's real, it's an amazing find.

News / Nazi gold train 'found in Poland' [90]

If there's anything in this it's very big news indeed. I wish I'd found it.

Two people in Poland say they may have found a Nazi train rumoured to be full of gold, gems and guns that disappeared in World War Two, Polish media say.
The train is believed to have gone missing near what is now the Polish city of Wroclaw as Soviet forces approached in 1945.
A law firm in south-west Poland says it has been contacted by two men who have discovered the armoured train.
Polish media say the men want 10% of the value of the train's contents.

Travel / Why does everyone seem to hate LOT Polish Airlines? [382]

Definitely a troll, yes. Business class on LOT is nothing special anyway. The food's ok, but they aren't exactly generous with the champagne. The seat does make a difference when flying to the U.S. but it isn't Emirates.

Daft to boast about sitting at the front anyway. Very few of the passengers in business have paid their own ticket or would be sitting there if they had to.

Travel / Why does everyone seem to hate LOT Polish Airlines? [382]

I like LOT Airlines. Most of the time I am alone in Business. I hate when they bring some undeserving passenger from economy, and have her sit beside me after the lights go out. Also, some locals flying home get drunk as dogs and we have to tolerate them. Real Mutants.

How do you know the person is undeserving?

To late to edit and the Internet connection dropped out. Are you sure you've posted in the right thread? There's one about the Dreamliner (dreary plane) and several about LOT. Hard to see the connection between your experiences with LOT and the OP's experience with his wife' scarily.

Perhaps the mods can move to the LOT thread?

Just a couple of questions.

If you're

alone in Business

why would they move an upgrade passenger next to you and if it's

most of the time

why

she

?
And again, if you're

alone in Business

why would the people

drunk as dogs

bother you?

Life / Video games centers and culture in Poland [22]

Sadly in the two decades I've lived there, I've seen computer games increase a lot. At first there were hardly any and people enjoyed sport, card games and face to face pastimes.

There are however such networks now and as far as I understand, the standards are quite high.

History / Do Polish people in general dislike Russia or Germany more? [369]

Most people in Britain never thought of it, and Thatcher's comments were a whole different thing. In Poland, the issue of Germany was very different - there wasn't that geographical or cultural distance that there was in Britain and people's memories of the war were very different.

History / Lusatian-Sarmatic obsession of Poles [153]

That's a remarkable theory however I suspect it will be a bloody cold day before its accepted by a consensus of Lusatian-Sarmatic scholars.

History / Lusatian-Sarmatic obsession of Poles [153]

Remember Crowie that there are others in the region, not just Sorbs and that there are also some who might see Germanisation as liberation.

And your last paragraph makes no sense at all.

History / Lusatian-Sarmatic obsession of Poles [153]

Such is life, one group always dominates - it never really matters which. In any case it's a mostly rural region. Now there are Sorbian language schools and nobody seriously suggests that 'germanisation' should 'retreat'.

History / Lusatian-Sarmatic obsession of Poles [153]

Crowe, part of Lusatia is in Poland . Should 'polonisation' retreat? No. Should 'germanisation'? No. For centuries the various communities have lived side by side with mostly no problems and nothing should 'retreat'.

History / Dacians in Poland [18]

Remember that Celt in the continental European sense is very often used by archaeologists to describe those groups wh weren't identifiably anything else; who differed from their neighbours enough for it to be worthy of mention.

There was certainly a Celtic presence in southern and western Poland. It would be interesting to know the full geographical range though for this we must wait for archaeological finds that who something that distinguish the people from other groups.

Life / Top 5 things I like about Poland [77]

I've lived much longer in both places and I see a lot of processed food in Poland and better, fresher and more local produce in the UK, especially intradotionsl markets selling fish caught a few hours before and fruit and veg from the local area. Plus local cheeses sold by weight and not in plastic packed slices, lamb from just outside the town, eggs from a farm not a factory. Plus local beer made in small breweries rather than fizzy lager from a factory.

Remember, microwaveable foods might be on the shelves, however they are frozen and in the freezer for a long time - they aren't fast moving consumer goods. Most people don't buy them anyway and I notice more obesity in Poland - in fact among children it's now at crisis level.

There's certainly nothing wrong with frozen veg, however there's a lot wrong with not eating much veg and having a high-sugar, high-fat diet. Most of Europe's frozen chips, packet soups and instant noodles are made in Poland. The Polish diet is not a particularly healthy one and this is reflected in the very high rates of stomach cancer.

News / Degenerate "rainbow" eyesore to disappear from Saviour Square (Plac Zbawiciela) in Warsaw [297]

Sadly, InPolska, some nationalists, conservatives, bigots really are that stupid. Pol3 is writing nonsense though. Plenty of people go up to the installation and touch it. Perhaps he should spend some time in the sun, sitting outside one of the cafes opposite and actually have a look rather than locked up indoors fulminating.

Life / Top 5 things I like about Poland [77]

Tartare isn't partly cooked like a bleu steak with some of it reaching a high temperature but most of it not, that's the issue there. Even rare steaks are legally iffy now unfortunately.

In any case, I never really trust tartare anywhere. I ordered some once in Warsaw and there was definitely raw pork mince in it.

I'm really surprised that some people in this thread say that food is fresher and tastier in Poland than the UK. God knows where they were doing their shopping in the UK. I also suspect that some posters in the thread think that those street stalls run by farmers selling fruit and veg have stuff straight from the farm, local food etc; they don't - it all comes from the wholesale market and most is imported from Holland or wherever and is full of the same pesticides and chemicals. At least at Waitrose you know it's exactly as labelled.

In Italy they like veg boiled to a pulp often, at least in home cooking. In Poland there's surowka, raw but often almost decomposing. The taste for steaks in PL tends to be for them to be overdone.

Incidentally in the UK, it's questionable whether bleu steaks are still legal or not under food hygiene laws. In Poland, people almost never order steak rare or even medium rare.

Travel / Roadside thing in Poland ~ what is this, please? [25]

There are much nicer ones than that in the picture. A long tradition and the ones of Mary are a focus for veneration during May. Not unique to Poland but particularly popular there.

do you consider the World Health Organisation to be "pseudo-medics"?

You really are unhealthily obsessed with this subject. Do you ever think about anything else?

It's always the wives I feel sorry for in these cases.

Life / How do Polish people treat their animals? [33]

I was wondering how in general animals are treated in Polish zoos and homes?

It depends. Some people indulge their little doggies and there are a lot of animal lovers. Other people are more callous. Remember that Poland is more rural than a lot of European countries and in the countryside people are often less sentimental about pets.

But in cities, people are generally very kind to animals and there is an animal rights movement in Poland.

One thing I've noticed is that people often don't have their pets doctored and this leads to a huge problem with animals that need reforming, puppies dumped at the sanctuary or by the side of the road and kittens drowned. Though not everyone of course is like that.
