Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation - part 2 [816]

My Polish grandmother called my aunt something like "poopka"

Two possibilities.

First, more likely, is that it's borrowed from German, in which 'doll' is 'Puppe' (from Latin pupa, young girl)

It would be Polonized as pupa (or more likely with the diminutive -ka as pupka)

Geerman loanwords are found throughout both standard Polish as well as many regional dialects.

Second, she was calling your aunt 'little butt'.... (pupa is an informal word for 'buttocks').

Language / Cultural disparities shown through Polish and English languages [195]

A symptom of narcissism is when a person feels compelled to intrude into conversations in which they have no contribution except to attempt to refocus the topic to themselves.

They cannot stand attention paid to anyone or anything else.
The topic is cultural disparities as reflected in different languages....
There are lots of interesting contrasts between Polish and English
-diminutives (highly expressive in Polish, kind of meh in English)
-impersonal constructions (varied and interesting in Polish, kind of meh in English)
-agency (expressive in English, not so much in Polish)

cultural attitudes toward elaborate and plain language respectively (and how this is tied to grammar)

Personal attitudes about the need or not to speak Polish are not the topic here and it would be nice if people ignored the intrustion.

Language / Cultural disparities shown through Polish and English languages [195]

A few weeks ago while getting a shopping cart at Biedronka I noticed a dead bird lying next to the carts. Inside, I told an employee that there was a 'zdechły ptak' there at which point she sighed "who am I going to get to clean that up?" When I was leaving she had drafted a young male trainee with a metal dustpan to do the dirty work...

But weirdly when I check google 'martwy ptak' is about 5 times more common than 'zdechły ptak' but 'ptak zdechł' is about 5 times more common than 'ptak umarł'

Is there a reason for this weirdness?

I think that since dogs (and cats) often live in homes and are quasi family members 'zdychać' sounds a bit... impersonal? uncaring? while for other animals it doesn't sound so brutal....

a shoemaker walks without shoes m

It's generally given as a rough equivalent to

The shoemaker's children go barefoot (lots of variations, some with cobbler some using other expressions like 'are ill shod' or 'have the worst shoes' etc )

I think the general emotional.... coloring? of the expression is a bit different in the two languages but it's hard to explain how....

News / How will Polish-American relations change if Trump is elected president again? [812]

Last years failed offensive was their last best chance

Remember, Ukraine has only ever received about half of the material aid promised and the insane stupid US Army expected them to carry out a ground offense with no air cover (which the US has consistently refused).

On the other hand, Ukraine has devastated the russian Black Sea fleet and driven the russian navy from Crimea and russia has just taken it.

The 'deescalation' idiots _still_ haven't learned that russia doesn't do anything when it's precious red lines are crossed but it gets very aggressive at any sign of goodwill or expectation that it will act like a normal country.

Biden resigned. Maybe Trump won't win.

He didn't resign from his office as president, just from the election. He (and Clintons) have endorsed Harris, who, as far as I know, is not..... popular. In 2020 she pulled out of the nomination race before the first caucus because she was going nowhere.

Word is that she's Obama's candidate.... and the plan was always for her to replace him.

It's hard for me to imagine her winning. She doesn't think on her feet, I have the idea she'd be a catspaw for Obama and his horrible policies....

History / 20 years of Poland in the EU. [317]

immigrant and and economic migrant. Don't see a reason to separate

An economic migrant is almost never planning a permanent move, their time frame is a few months or maybe a few years in order to build up capital to take home. They often don't need to learn very much of the local language and accept temporary living conditions that could be too rough for locals.Often live without close family nearby because... again they want to build up cash for their real lives back home.

An immigrant is thinking long term and wants to integrate/assimilate as much as possible and accepts that their children born in the new country will be more like local children rather than children back home (among other things). They are not eager to live in crowded conditions with strangers except as a temporary measure before they can become more independent in their new country.

Again some people begin as one and move to another category but the basic goals and time frames of the two groups remain distinct.

History / 20 years of Poland in the EU. [317]

Migrants is a term for all people moving.

The terminology has become hopelessly corrupted.... with people using migrant and refugee and immigrant more or less interchangeably...

migrant - just someone leaving a country to live in another (or from one place in a country to another place in the same country if it's big enough)

immigrant (my definition) - a person who leaves their birth country to join another country (this process is more or less dead in the modern world)

economic migrant - a person who moves to make money, traditionally through employment (usually the plan is a temporary move but often these get dragged out)

refugee - person displaced by war or other cataclysmic events

asylum seeker - person suffering from individualized (not collective) repression, political asylum was designed to be an individualized and generally rare process and not something granted by the kilo (see refugee)

welfare migrant - a new category enabled by outdated and dysfunctional EU policies, want to move to a richer country primarily to receive government aid, not generally interested in (legal) employment

Genealogy / lynski or linski - last name spelling [4]

Lynski also exists in Polish.

Liński would be Polish as would Łyński

Lynski can't exist sincwe l is never followed by y (it has to change to ł before y)

lynski also can't be Czech (in case anyone asks) because in Czech the sequence ki isn't used, just -ky

Language / Cult statements in the Polish language [31]

calling in every single part of the English language

Not the topic of the thread.... I might have used the term 'iconic statements in Polish' but I didn't start it.....

What potential Polish sentences do you have to contribute?

Food / Panga Fish (available in Polish stores); I'll never eat it again. Alternative? [68]

Tilapia is one of the most eaten fish in Poland

Source?

I would say that Śledź (herring) is the most consumed fish in Poland and Mintaj (pollock), Morszczuk (hake) Dorsz (cod) and maybe Halibut (halibut) Pstrąg (trout) Makrela (mackerel) and Łosoś (salmon) are all more common than tilapia in stores.....

News / What will Britain's Labor Coup mean for Poland? [100]

many are probably

The point is that no one has any idea who they really are or why they're trying to get to the UK.... letting in a bunch of unvetted people is not a good idea (see Germany 2015 to present; current US) and it is local citizens who will pay the price. There are almost daily incidents in Germany of Merkeljugend violently assaulting native Germans (and many cases of illegal aliens in the US harming US citizens)

How does anyone think this is rational or sustainable?

once they've arrived in a boat International Law prevents them being returned to their country of origin.

So they passed a law they knew they couldn't enforce..... enough said.

never seen a black person on a most wanted list in Poland

The wonders of diversity!

There are at least two black guys, African from their names.... there might be more but I got tired of clicking.... both are wanted for/suspected of....

"Art. 258 § 1 Branie udziału w zorganizowanej grupie albo związku mających na celu popełnienie przestępstwa lub przestępstwa skarbowego"

"Taking part in an organized group or association aimed at committing a crime or a fiscal offence"

you would think this would be a quick affair.

The west keeps expecting russians to act rationally and doesn't want to believe russia is actually serious.... kind of like torq.

I know that rationality is the last thing motivating russians and that they're serious and treating them like a normal country won't work.

Every country should want to be more than it is.

russia wants to recreate the USSR and subjugate all countries around it (including Poland)..... why do I think this?

In other news zhopniks have gone from a micro-second of shame about targeting sick children to demanding more....

Why?

Cause russia wants to be more than it is.... more than it can be given socio-cultural realities (of being ruled by a bunch of psychopathic thieves).

many a Russian statesman has said over the centuries, is the "Mother of All Russian Cities"

Fascinating..... and completely irrelevant....

Study US history

Nobody knows US history (in a superficial way) more than russian wannabes..... almost everything they do is to try to get US attention and respect (they just don't have any idea how... kind of sad and pathetic).

Dismantling statues

Kyiv is not a russian city, so taking down statues of russian heroes seems kind of normal.... especially when russia does things like bomb cancer kids... do russians really think attacking sick children will make Ukrainians like them? That's a cargo cult!

a little too "on the nose" even by Russian monument standards...

They should make a similar one, but turn the trident into a Z and erect in Kyiv.....
