News / Throwing away the constitution in Poland? [626]

15 solid years

PiS

You're probably the only person in Poland who thinks that. From the appalling start they've made, 15 months is an optimistic guess.

Not most, virtually everyone will be

Yes - those protesting to defend the constitution tomorrow will almost all be Polish citizens.

I didn't think that even PIS could be that stupid, but yet again they prove themselves to be more moronic than one could imagine.

They actually are that stupid but as usual damage has been averted. By constitutional means of course.

Andrzej Duda to president Bronisław Komorowski on the 2015 presidential debate: "It's very bad when president violates Constitution."

Basically they like the idea of the rule of law when it supports their particular activities and despise it when it doesn't.

as a work of fictio

Works of fiction generally have some merit. That is just a tissue of lies designed to smear respected individuals.

Life / Can someone tell me about the reason behind being gay in Poland being wrong [148]

nobody cares

His party practically obsess on that issue.

If anything he would gain sympathy.

That would very much depend on the nature of what was publicised...

Well, bimbos don't form political movements and don't demand privileges,.

Forming political parties and demanding privileges is the Polish national sport.

Life / Can someone tell me about the reason behind being gay in Poland being wrong [148]

Exactly.

He was famously outed on TV by President Wałęsa and I fully expect that if his party try any funny business this time it will all come out in the wash. Nothing dreadfully scandalous, just seedy stuff. In Poland they aren't really used to people from that community fighting back, however that does now seem to be happening.

I have noticed once that Polish gay people move to the UK,Holland, Germany etc they quickly embrace the more tolerant culture and don't hide their sexuality as they did back home.

That's especially true for people from out in the sticks where there's not much privacy anyway.

Allegedly......

I knew of him as a person before I knew of him as a politician (before he even stood for any office) and the less said about that here the better...

PiS are down to 32% support and falling

The tide's turning fast. Nobody expects them to last the full term of office, but this is quicker than I expected. A month or so in and there's a constitutional crisis....

They seem to be very quick to try and invalidate results that they don't agree with.

It's an established pattern of behaviour for them.

I must say, it was clear from the start that they'd start to fall apart - just a surprise how quickly.

Another important difference is between common law (US) and civil law (Poland most European countries) where lots of things have to be spelled out in the constitution in the latter where as the former leaves them for courts to figure out.

This is key to it. The English Common Law system (inherited by a few other countries) isn't perfect however the French system (inherited by Poland, Germany, Italy etc) gives much more room for infighting.

can be

Can, could, might, would.

We need to stop mining and using it right now. When your scientific methods are developed, maybe we 'could' start mining again.

The coal industry shall not last very long (too dangerous for the environment and health)

Exactly. Time now to draw a line under it.

Nasty, dangerous work, toxic for the environment.

economic suicide.

Suicide for the planet if we keep burning coal. Particularly the low grade stuff of which there is so much in Poland.

For example they call for members of Consitutional Court to resign, because they discredited and ashamed themselves. Radio Maryja, TV Trwam, TV Republika and other church media will praise Duda.

No surprises here. Coulrocracy = government by clowns

Law / Uber in Poland - illegal [28]

That's about fines for drivers. If you check the Uber website (as a regular and happy user I recommend it to any expat or local) you will see details about their insurance.

Not that a passenger need be interested.

They really are good. If you were genuine, and not a taxi operator pretending not to be and trying (badly) to do a free advert, I'd recommend them to you too.

I would seriously avoid this taxi firm you're trying to push - too many posts from yourself pretending not to be adverts, whereas in fact one radio taxi is much the same as any other.

One reason I prefer uber.com/cities/gdansk

Also worth mentioning that (an alternative to taxis) the new fast rail link from Gdansk Airport to Gdansk centre (with good connections to Sopot and Gdynia) is now open.

Law / Uber in Poland - illegal [28]

No. It is not illegal. It is operating very successfully in most major cities in Poland and has been for quite some time now. It is growing in popularity. Much better than old-fashioned taxis. I'm a very heavy taxi user and I switched to Uber a couple of months ago as a trial and won't switch back to old-style taxis.

Plus (and this is a big plus) they follow,a route determined in advance so no "going the scenic route" something very common in Poland if the taxi driver thinks you're a stranger in town.

If you have any questions about their insurance (which you don't, since you're a taxi operator and not a bona fide passenger) I refer you to their website: uber.com/cities/gdansk

the 5th PIS stooge will be sworn in within a few days, i.e. after her predecessor's term in office expires, meaning that she has been appointed and accepted before any vacancy has occurred?

Basically a planned assault on democracy - to be expected really.

Are we about to see a real constitutional crisis if the Tribunal throws out the PiS laws?

We had some of this last time they were briefly in.

More noise than anything else.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [425]

Several times, some Poles with whom I was in the best terms have simply disappeared with no reason and just played dead when I tried to contact them

Yes. I know a few people who've said exactly the same thing about Poland. One minute someone is contacting you all the time and it can seem a bit intense, the next minute they vanish.

News / Poland's PiS party members and crime [346]

How about the one Duda says Kaminski committed and which Kaminski agrees he committed

Quite. The pardon just shows their lack of respect for both law and justice.
