News / There is no Poland without the Church! [178]

Krakow cops see a Katowice number plate

I heard horror stories on this subject, especially if you have Warsaw plates and you are out of province. Although I personally haven't experienced anything with my Warsaw plates and I more or less drove all over Poland except to the NE corner, and that will happen soon when I visit Suwałki.

So check this out. It turns out there are concerned drivers and corrupt Police and the Church has nothing to do with the concerned drivers :)

They can only fine you 50zl per missing document

This matches what I know, although I am curious based on what Dougpol1 said that you could have your car impounded. Never even heard of that before.

Paweł, son of the local PiS

I see this particular problem even today. And now just employment, but also for award of contracts etc...

We now have more bureacracy than ever.

That is not true. Official processes have improved big time in Poland, in particular from 2010 to 2015. During this time I established a business, bought a home, deal with 2 court cases plus immigration and citizenship issues and I can say from my own experience that today there is less red tape than ever before, however that is not to say that it is better than Denmark for example (not even close), and much more improvement is needed.

Law / Weed laws in Poland [25]

Of vastly different attitude and culture vs. police in Poland, I remember in the 90s in Canada, I witnessed a friend get caught by a police officer while smoking a fat J on board a ferry heading to Victoria. The officer made him throw it in the sea and gave him a lecture how irresponsible it was to smoke in place where kids can potentially see.

Food / Why Poles not like rice? [95]

I think rice is gaining popularity here. Especially rice prepacked in ready to cook sachettes which you simply put in boiling water for 15 minutes and then remove.

shout loudest

All bark but no bite.

Why can't we enjoy positive and constructive values (such as being honest, hard working and helpful) and move forward? Does it need to be organized by "priests"? Granted, many people feel better if they hear the answers they want to hear from an "authoritative" figure, but some simply don't feel that same urge. Do we have to measure everyone using the same ruler? If that isn't totalitarianism then I don't know what is.

By the definition presented by Polonius3, I more than meet my "Catholic Duties". Actually this year I have "performed my Catholic duties" twice, due to being a witness in two weddings. Yet I never identify myself as "Catholic" when asked and prefer to say "agnostic" or even sometimes "atheist" or "pagan". I HATE being asked this question. My relationship with my creator is nobody's business, and that little bit of privacy is in fact guaranteed by Polish law.

Back to the topic, Poland is so much more than just the Church. I agree that the Church today is an integral part of Polish traditions and way of life for many Poles, but like everything else in life, things change. I am not against going to Church if it makes you happy or helps you sleep at night. Some people even need the sense of belonging they get from Church attendance. But not everyone.

I presume that's also you view of your own mother and grandmother. A shining example of the kind of of filial love and respect demonstrated by the wayward and unchurched

Unfortunately it is my own generation (born and raised under communism) that lives in this bipolarity. My mother and grandmother (both RIP) received liberal French education and escaped from this disease.

mohair berets

That stinky old baggage - Poland will dump them sooner or later. Everyone is getting annoyed with the smell.

Edit to add: Many social traditions originate from the Church (and many if not most of these in turn are originally Pagan), and I actually enjoy participating in some of these traditions from time to time. But I think they are fading out little by little.

Poland does not have moral teaching other than that which the Church proclaims

What a slap in the face for every cultural, philosophical and legal achievement of Poles since the creation of Poland!

Law / Where can I check in Poland my company formation status and tax number NIP and REGON? [95]

nip 7781012911

This NIP number belongs to "WIELKOPOLSKI URZĄD WOJEWÓDZKI W POZNANIU" so absolutely not

regon 00056931

Not a valid REGON number, but if it matches the KRS number of a company under liquidation called NOWATEX SP Z O O

So absolutely not, nothing they told you about them is correct, it is fishy and it stinks.

News / Coal-Powered Poland Refuses to "Go Green". EU Ain't Happy. [304]

I agree that on the medium and long term, Poland needs either nuclear power or a very good renewable energy initiative to move forward, but both concepts are stumbling upon a lot of red tape at the moment, not the least because of indirect and sometimes direct interference from the coal mining industry.

Well, here is a small step in the right direction towards energy security. The Polish-Lithuanian energy bridge is now completed, meaning further European integration in terms of energy.

thenews.pl/1/10/Artykul/214023,PolandLithania-energy-bridge-opens-

I believe that in the future, defense will be about energy and data as much as it is about pure military might. In terms of energy, EU and individual member states are slowly doing a lot of good things to ensure security.

@delph perfectly logical. Also, private owners are far more likely to take strong action when their money is wasted by way of corruption and mismanagement vs. government.

However, the problem is the workers and the unions. Workers want money, benefits and job security - and they have declined (upon the advice of their unions) to accept shares. They want benefits but no responsibilities. Communist carryover mentality and industry altogether. And if the gov won't do exactly as they say, nothing easier than union bosses sending 5-10 thousand coal miners to Warsaw to effectively shut down the city. They constantly use (imply) this threat.

warsawvoice.pl/WVpage/pages/article.php/32331/news

Quote from above source: "Poland's energy sector will from now on be overseen by deputy Treasury Minister"

To me, it looks like since EU has had it with Poland's coal industry living off subsidies, it was decided to stick Polish energy companies with the bill for keeping the corrupt and poorly managed Polish coal industry afloat.

What a senseless politically motivated move that does no good for Poland except further reinforce the communist mentality of a centrally managed economy! What a shame.

Love / Polish women and fertility [41]

concern among politician

Which they often address with ineffective solutions intended to win them votes instead of dealing with the core issue.

Being a parent with a young child in Poland I believe the single biggest problem is the lack of nurseries (which varies from area to area) and lack of support for parents that need nurseries (financial and otherwise).

Also, many parents with "junk" labor contracts or with intensive career pressure do not feel secure about taking days off to take care of sick children.

This alone is a supercritical point. Kids get sick A LOT in Poland, especially during the colder seasons. With parents being distinctly reluctant to take days off to take care of their sick kids, many end up taking their sick kids to the nursery or school instead of keeping them at home, and considering how overcrowded these nurseries and schools may be, diseases spread like fire in a dry shrub. And when your first kid gets sick and needs antibiotics on average 15-18 times a year, you probably won't feel keen to have a second one, EVEN if your financial and education situation was better.

And a general lack of social-corporate responsibility doesn't help with that. Everyone is in to make a quick buck, even if stupidly so.

Life / Bribery and corruption 'fact of life' in Poland? [152]

By upgrade I mean complain to a higher authority. People in the contracting business operate somewhat like a mafia and ticking off the wrong people can be potentially dangerous. Yes, in this day and age in Europe...
