Genealogy / Jewish Roots of Poland [638]

And by your own admittance Czechoslovak.

Interesting, you know more about my own family than I do. No, he was as Polish as it gets and very proud of it, there were Poles and Czechs and also Germans living there. There were Ślązacy, Schläsinger, Schlesier, Ślůnzoki, Slezané, or whatever your preference was. Oh, and apparently Jews too.

You two would love each other, hating is more fun when in company you know.

There's another fact of life for you MOST American Jews hate Poles. Fact no denying it. No reason to make up stories though, just admit it, I'm OK with that and the feeling might be mutual. The more I read the more it gets my blood boiling with all those lies on this forum.

I won't deny that because frankly I know very few American Jews and the ones I do know have never talked to me about Poland. So I don't know but maybe it's true and maybe it isn't.

IF it is true for some I'll blame the individuals who do that for being ignorant, I won't blame all the Jews though. It would be illogical otherwise.

I give up, I guess my grandfather not only hated the Jews, he also spoke improper Polish. Imagine that. LOL

skysoulmate: "pojebani Żydzie"
A fairy tail, if anything it should be 'pojebany Żydzie' or 'pojebani Żydzi' plural, insulting perhaps but at least a proper Polish for you. If you can’t get this short sentence right two words you’re not Polish period. A native would never make this mistake.

Listen knock of this fair tale bs, I was there and I know what I heard. As I clearly stated I am not sure about the spelling as my Polish just isn't good enough, however I understand it and know what was said.

You have this preconceived notion of ALL Poles loving the Jews which is total nonsense. Some Americans don't like blacks, some French don't like Muslims, etc., etc. Likewise, some, notice I said SOME Poles do not like the Jews. Fact of life and denying it makes you look silly.

Case in point, my dad's father HATED the Jews with a passion. Born in Czechowice but raised in Kraków, Roman Catholic, Polish to the bone, he hated the Jews. Name a world crisis and somehow he'd show how those Cholerne Żydzi were responsible. He was obsessed and fortunately a total opposite of everyone else in my family, well almost everyone else. I don't think he was the ONLY anti-Semite in Poland.

A fairy tail, if she was Polish she would never make a grammatical mistake like this. Use Google translate next time, you might have a better results perhaps then your story might seem to be plausible.

Interesting, I vividly remember a relative of ours visiting us in Stockholm many years ago and during one of the late night "discussions" I heard him talk about the "pojebani Żydzie" and there were a few more adjectives there, pierdolony, zakurwiały, Żydowski skurwysyn, etc. Not sure if I spelled those words correctly but nah, not a fairly tale at all.

He was as racist as it gets but if you told him that he'd say he had many Jewish friends. lol He died a few years back but from what I've heard from my relatives he never changed his ways.

Having said that, people like that are a tiny minority in Poland but they do exist. Of course, that applies to most other countries too as racism and xenophobia is not a problem that's unique to Poland only.

Genealogy / Jewish Roots of Poland [638]

What a thread, let me just say that there is definitely a lot of anymosity towards Jews.

I come from a family of strong anti-semitic Poles. I recall one time a few years ago walking past a newly-opened Jewish restaurant in Warsaw, and asking my grandmother about this pretty enticing restaurant. "Pojebani Zydzie" and she spit into the ground with rage, that, quite frankly, I have never witnessed in anyone before.

Likewise, I too had family members who were, well, not very politically correct to put it mildly. I figured it's never too late to turn the tide. There's racism in most societies one way or the other. We like to make ourselves feel better by picking on others. Human trait.

To stir things up even more:

Publisher defends book on Polish plunder of Jews

The Associated Press

WARSAW, Poland -- A Polish publisher is defending his decision to publish a book arguing that Poles plundered Jewish wealth during the Holocaust.

"Golden Harvest," by Jan Gross and Irena Grudzinska Gross, is causing a stir in Poland even before it goes on sale March 10.

It argues that Poles actively profited from Jewish persecution during World War II, challenging the widespread view in Poland that the nation, by and large, behaved honorably during the Nazi German occupation.

Henryk Wozniakowski, the head of publishing house Znak, said Tuesday that the book aims to make the public aware of "these cruel and often difficult facts."

He said it "challenges our collective memory" and is an attempt to seek some justice for the victims of the Holocaust. An edition in English also is planned.

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

...Saying that Polish women are not the most beautiful women in the world is like saying that the sun does not rise in the East.

Saying there are no thin and very feminine American women is like saying no Indians in Mumbai live in slums.

Genealogy / Just found out I'm Polish! [45]

I know what it is with Poles...! They hold on to their Polish heritage as if they've got NOTHING else going for them.

Wrong, that applies to most nationalities. There are Americans who have Italian, German, Mexican, Egyptian, Irish, etc. roots and many of them, just like people of Polish descent like to hang on to their old traditions, nothing wrong with that.

The sarcasm and negative feedback within this thread is totally unnecessary. The lady just shared some news with us, something she was excited about. Yet some people here just love to spoil it for her, a bunch of negative party-poopers, shame on you.

Ashley - you do realize this is Polishforums.com, right? Would you have preferred if it was renamed to BeAshamedofBeingPolish.com? I just don't get it...

Well, you're still an American and now you found out you are of Polish ancestry. :)

Congratulations and welcome to the club.

Po polsku / Charakterystyczne błedy popełnione przez obcokrajowców - razem, je wyeliminujemy! [30]

Lol, uczyc fizyki znaczy "to tutor/teach someone physics". Raczej na początku było bez dotyków.

Aha, no tak.

Oczywiście.

Myślę że gdyby ta Niemiecka maszyna szyfrująca Enigma używała Polską gramatykę jako szyfr nikt by nie mógł jej rozszyfrować i Niemcy by wygrali Drugą Wojnę Światową. ;)

Dzięki Torq :)

A ja ostatnio dałam takiemu jednemu namiary (maila) na nauczycielkę języka polskiego. Niech się dogadują sami. Jak kiedyś taka jedna uczyła mojego brata fizyki, to do dziś żyją długo i szczęśliwie.:D

Pozdro Sky...;)

Hmm, ta terapia fyziki czy może terapia fizyczna musiała być bardzo udana i spełniająca. :)

Life / Babcia or Busha - any social class difference? [359]

There are many different regional dialects in Poland. Can't Polish-Americans have a Polish dialect of their own??

I'd see your point if they simply pronounced Polish words differently. However "busia" was never a Polish word, it's broken Polish at best. If you're gonna use that word then you should call the grandfather djusia or something similar.

-------

It's not a social class thing, it's a generational & American vs. Polish thing...

Polishmama - a few corrections are in order.

Polish Grandmother: Babusia, Babunia, Babcia (don't forget the "a"), Baba, Mama, etc are words I'm familiar with.

Buzia means mouth or kiss, never grandmother. Busza or Babusza might be Russian but it certainly isn't Polish.

Busia, Busza, Babusza, Bubi, Buba, Busha, Booboo must be AmeroPolEnglish influenced by Russian. LOL

I struggle with Polish as I was a kid when we moved but personally I'd rather not use the Polish language at all then use some kind of pig-Latin Polish version. Germans and Russians are very proud of their languages and I think Poles and those with Polish ancestry should be too. Endorsing "broken Polish" words is equivalent to a affirming a Polish version of Ebonics, a pretend Polish language. Just my thoughts on it. YMMV.

Love / Polish women are complicated. Why? [51]

And for Christ's sake, stop with generalizations already! Are all american guys fat, bold, ugly and stupid?

I agree with you and you make an excellent point. Enough of all those generalizations, PF is full of stories about Polish women. Most of those stories are just that - stories. One could say that from a man's perspective all women are complicated but so are we men - from many women's perspective.

well, i tell you that: widziały gały co brały..

I like this saying :)

if you wanna piece of ass, say good bye to your valet... guys, need to smart up about women... ahem, girls, sorry...

...oh pgtx, please don't ruin my perception of southern belles :)

PS. Would a Costanza wallet suffice? lol

Travel / Best place to exchange money in Poland? [98]

Why not?

The banks will NOT reimburse you if their own ATMs spit out bogus (fake) yuan (rmb) bills. Has happened to several of my friends and the banks will not refund the money or issue legit money bills. Here's a typical scenario:

At first they'll say the hotel is responsible (the ATM is inside the Hyatt's lobby). The hotel manager says it's the bank's responsibility. So you end up going to the nearest branch and ask to speak to a supervisor. The manager persists that the money couldn't have come from their ATM. When you say there's video evidence (hotel lobby has several cameras) the tone changes and now he's implying that since you have counterfeit money on you then you're actually breaking the law! You're a criminal!

They'll make you leave the money and walk out of the bank! This despite having video proof of the ATM spitting out fake money.

Note, I'm not talking about some very well designed Chinese fake bills. No, rather discolored pieces of paper that happen to be the same size as their 100 yuan (~$15) bills. The size is the only thing that is correct. Wrong paper, wrong color, wrong everything, no text, you get the picture. if someone wants to go shopping they usually exchange $500 plus at a time (you can buy beautiful pearls in shanghai :)

Last time this happened a friend got over $600 in fake local currency. This is not that uncommon in red china, supposedly local cops are in on this "venture". So no ATMs in red china is my advice.

PS. The ultimate irony of it all is that if you have dollar or euro bills and try to exchange them for the local money at the hotel they will not accept ANY bills from you that have any tears in them, I mean it has to be almost perfect.

Travel / Best place to exchange money in Poland? [98]

What is Kantor? Currency exchange office like Forex?

Which country are you going to? I travel for a living so I do lots of currency purchases.

From my experience the best rates are usually when you use your debit card and make regular withdrawals from a local ATM. You get the best rate in a 24 hour period.

Then it's credit cards (master cards usually a better rate than visa).
Then it's bank purchases but it depends on the bank and the amount. The larger the amount the better rate/service fee.
Following that is currency exchangers but in my case the standard currency exchange fees are usually waived (crew member discount) and therefore I'd get a better deal here than in a bank. I posted it below the bank exchange assuming you do have to pay the service/exchange fee.

The difference between the best and the worst deals can be anywhere from a few per cent up to 8 per cent, that's the highest difference I've ever noticed.

Disclaimer - never use your ATM card in red china (hong kong and taiwan is ok).
YMMV, good luck.

Love / Polish girls and contraceptives [68]

Then who will look after it? You'd prefer the baby in state care programs?

Are you serious? Currently you have to wait more than 5 years to adopt a child born in the US and 3-4 years for a child born in China, etc. Have several friends who're unable to conceive; a lady friend is an ovarian cancer survivor and she's only 32, yet she cannot have her own babies. Her and her husband have now waited for over 3 years, a wonderful couple with both having good jobs and money saved up for the potential child's college, etc.

If there were no choices I'd understand but knowing so many have waited for so long yet there are societal leaches who are drug abusers and unable to function in our society who keep giving birth once a year or so is just awful.

Love / Polish girls and contraceptives [68]

But I disagree with the concept of free contraception. You want to have sex - you should pay for the pill or condoms. You, and not the tax payers.

Well, I agree with contraceptives not being free, or abortions. You screw - you pay - as simple as that. For the sake of our discussion - if viagra shouldn't be free how about prozac? (depression) One disability quickly leads to the other - i don't know the answer but where do we draw the line?

What would you rather pay for (through taxes)... Birth control pills or the baby that the family can't afford so they get state aid (or it ends up in an orphanage).

How about they get no state aid and lose the child if they can't take care of it? If someone procreates without the means to take care of their offspring then they lose the right to the offspring. Very, very harsh but why should others pay for those who only know how to make babies and won't educate themselves? Just asking...

Love / Polish girls and contraceptives [68]

Yes it's common risk. That's why you shouldn't smoke when using contaceptive pills

True yet my friend's wife never smoked, just imagine she wasn't that much older than you are when she had her heart attack. Sometimes you just never know...

he means they don't like sex anymore after the pill ;D

I'm glad you included the quotation marks here as that's obviously his sentiment and not mine.

...and you're right, that's what he means although I think it has the exactly opposite effect. A contraceptive makes women feel in charge of their own bodies and that can't possibly have a negative effect on their desire...

Either way, too much of this black and white reasoning here, the truth is some of us are "innies" and some of us are "outies" but our thinking patterns are actually very similar, its about finding happiness in our lives. At least in my view it is.

Love / Polish girls and contraceptives [68]

Not your dad and my point was that this might be what you perceive as a reality but others, such as myself might disagree. A very broad statement to say "the pill makes chicks crazy," wouldn't you say?

If so, fast cars, sports, viagra, jack daniels, and strip joints make most men unstable, right? ...or wait, never mind... :)

It's been my experience that you are being very melodramatic here. Pills actually help some women to have more "normal", painless or rather less painful lives. So let's not exaggerate here, ok?
skysoulmate

Love / Polish girls and contraceptives [68]

well I don't argue that not every women can use every pill. It's like the doctor has to match a pill to the woman. Maybe some women don't have alternative...

Szwedwpolsce has a valid point. There are risks for sure but I guess there are risks in everything we do nowadays. About 7 years ago my friend's girlfriend had a heart attack right before she turned 28! It was shocking to everyone as she was so young, very slender, excessed regularly and seemed to be very healthy.

Fortunately it was a mild heart attack and she survived but that was the end of her career (a pilot at a small regional airline). The risk factors for her were her race and the pills she took. She's black or African-American for the PC crowd and apparently heart disease is slightly more common within the black community. Also, just a few months earlier she'd switched to a different contraceptive and they suspected she ended up having a blod clot in one of the arteries that supplied blood to her heart. She switched contraceptives because she had painful periods. She is fine but she won't take any more contraceptive pills.

So yes there are risks but overall they're probably very low; after all millions of women use those pills every day and yet you seldom hear similar stories...

Genealogy / Polish looks? [1410]

If not, which nationality do I look like I am? I am a mix of Polish, English, Irish, Scottish, and probably a few other random things, but I have no clue which, if any of those, I resemble!

You look somewhat Polish to me although maybe there's a hint of a Latina there too? Not sure but those big, luscious lips (sultry lips is always a big plus) made me think so. Either way, keep smiling often, that smile looks pretty on you :)

PS. Disregard the "rotten apples" here (jabłko), miserable people like to share their misery with others.

Was it an old Bergfalk glider? I did the same in Hawaii a few years back, awesome. Of course if open cockpit flying is your thing you must try trikes, an incredible experience. I've done it many times and one of these day I'll probably buy one of those things. :)
