Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

Bingo :) The riddle refers to his alcohol abuse, while as you say, he was killed at/near that spot. The first statue was built 10 years after his death, while they replaced it with a new one 15 years afterwards. It was torn down in 2018.

The photo itself was taken from the car park where his statue stood in Baligród.

How did you work that one out? :D

History / What makes you feel Polish? [167]

I actually like this way of doing things. It's much, much more straightforward - if someone tries to go back on their word, it's much easier to say 'Look, it's in writing', at which point, they tend to back down quickly. I also really like the way that illegal contract terms can simply be ignored.

IMO, it's a huge red flag in Poland if someone wants to work on the basis of an unwritten agreement.

Foreigners from the West often complained on PF how blunt Poles are

In language, yes, but I notice that in other aspects, Poles are really similar to Brits in the way that they can't really give you a straight answer to money-related topics.

But I mean, this can also be to your advantage. I remember being asked to work overtime on a Sunday once, and after a simple "and it will be paid in next month's salary, right?", the topic was instantly dropped. Works for me ;)

News / How could PiS better spend billions instead of 500+ ? [280]

media focus on being an independent and free citizen

They don't want that. It's exactly the opposite of what 500+ is intended to achieve - a class of people with meagre means who will do absolutely everything to defend their social welfare benefits, even at the cost of freedom.

Another riddle:

One drink, two drinks, three drinks, four drinks and the famous general fell. He rose again 10/15 years later, but then he fell again for good in 2018.

It was said...

Not everyone is sung in song, but they will sing for that name. It can rise above the history of legend.

History / What makes you feel Polish? [167]

if you give out emotions of a Pole being unable to have any virtues or good character

They certainly have virtues and positive aspects of their character, but as soon as money's involved, forget about anything other than ruthlessness.

Even this can be positive, depending on the situation though. I quite like the fact that in Poland, no-one is going to bat an eyelid if you stick to the letter of your contract.

News / Poland's LBGT Seen as Dangerous Foreign Idea. [39]

to show off butt naked on the streets

Doesn't happen in Poland. I invite you to take part in a Pride march sometime, you'd be surprised how family friendly they are in Poland.

Domestic violence and alcohol abuse issues

This is the biggest threat and danger to Polish families. Who wants to stay in a relationship where alcohol abuse and beatings feature as a part of daily life?

A Poles emotions are sincere

It's funny, but sincerity is not something I'd associate with Poles in general.

News / Poland's LBGT Seen as Dangerous Foreign Idea. [39]

LGBT is an organization promoting the destruction of families

It's not an organisation, so how could it promote the destruction of anything?

By the way, in Poland, the biggest threat to families are domestic violence and alcohol abuse.

Shall we take a vote ?

Let's take a vote on you being removed permanently from PF instead.

By the way, it's what, 6am there and you're already on PF for the day? Not much enjoying life, huh?

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

It's a fascinating place, a sort of oddity with its own environment ang feeding.

The moment that got me was walking around Jablunkov/Jabłonków and realising that Polish was actually widely used there.

More please,

Similar in name to a well known element, this building is home to an international academic partnership.

And I liked your clue at the beginning - it was almost poetic

I'm sleepy so I have no brains for this clue, but I'll try and do more in that style :D I like the idea of trying to make the clues poetic while giving statistics - I think it's a fun way of doing it!

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

Yup, you and Miło were both right :) It used to be one village before 1920, then it was divided between Poland and Czechoslovakia.

Paulina - I chose this for a reason, because I found it fascinating that there were a majority of Protestants in a Polish-speaking village before WW1. I really like Zaolzie in general, so I thought it would make an interesting riddle! It's not clear what happened to the Protestant majority there - only a small part of the village ended up in Czechoslovakia as Horní Líštná, but if anyone can find out more, I'd love to know!

Because Man and Woman marry for different reasons :)

Where are you from, out of curiosity? I'm wondering if you have a different cultural background to us.

Check out also Utopiec, Poludnica or Skarbnik if you haven't heard of them.

Kaprys you monster, now I'll be spending the whole night reading about them!

(thank you very much, I love this stuff!)

Yup, very much divided. It's not Zgorzelec/Görlitz, though, it's much smaller and far less known. Population wise, in 1910, 99% at least were native Polish speakers. At the same time, between 60-70% were Protestants, 30-40% were Catholics and there were a handful of Jews.

What's quite fascinating is that there's hysteria against Halloween, but then the same people go dabbling with the occult at Andrzejki or they drown poor Marzanna.

I don't know those demons though Kaprys, so thank you for the heads up!

@Delph, is that a border crossing?

Yep, that's the first part of the clue. The second part should narrow it down :)

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

however there's nothing like that bitter taste that comes from Seville oranges.

In general, I'd say this is Poland's biggest flaw - the lack of variety in produce. I still cannot understand why they don't differentiate between potato varieties.

and i thought i knew about volcanos around these parts obviously not.

I knew you'd definitely get the other ones, but because this one is still a working mine and you can't go to the top, people don't really go there.

Anyway, another one, with a clue.

Left side out, right side in. You might say that this place is two sides of the same coin.

I don't know the answer to delph's riddle

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilko%C5%82ak_(Pog%C3%B3rze_Kaczawskie) - it's here. Quite a fascinating place, as it doesn't receive so many visitors as other volcanoes nearby, but it's still a very pleasant walk in autumn or spring.

a bit like Delphs Silesian mound

There's more where that one came from ;)

Thanks Dolno, I'd never thought about doing it, but having jars of mixed peppers would be incredibly helpful when cooking some things.

Work / Moving to Poland, Working for a UK Company [34]

One of the better ones. Lower Silesia is a total disaster in comparison.

Anyway, the biggest issue for you is the legal work - to explain, the 90 day Schengen visa waiver allows you to do business, but not to work here. For that reason, you might be forced into being a contractor - you'll be in the non-EU queue for residence permits, so you'll have to wait at least 2-3 months to get it. Until you get it, you can't work - even remotely.
