Off-Topic / Five or more years of Erdogan! [32]

Interesting how many Turkish women, and youngish ones no less, seem to have overwhelmingly cast their votes for such a reprobate!
Tansu Cillar, where art thou??

Genealogy / Are all Poles blue eyed and blonde? [450]

Many Poles are indeed often natural blonds. However, I know numerous brown-haired, brown-eyed Poles.

Off-Topic / Five or more years of Erdogan! [32]

In addition, how does Erdogan ever intend to handle the tinderbox issue of the Kurds, much less Turkey's relationship with Germany??

Apparently, his victory will enable Sweden to join in NATO. Let's wait and see.

News / Polish IQ ahead of France, USA, Canada, Israel, Ireland... [47]

The concept of an intelligence quotient in itself is relative!
IQ tests were long abandoned in this country as a way of "objectively" measuring one's intelligence, as cultural factors are as much an interference factor as anything else.

During the '60's, black and Latino children were typically shown three drawings of a (Caucasian!!) man carrying a briefcase, another a garden hoe, yet another seated in a restaurant above the question: "WHICH OF THESE MEN IS GOING TO WORK?"

Only the first answer was deemed correct. If that's not discrimination, I don't know the meaning of the word.

Off-Topic / Five or more years of Erdogan! [32]

In the light of Tansu Cillar along with many other enlightenened, educated Turkish leaders, Recep Tayyip Erdogan's an embarrassment to Turkey's progress, who wants to lead Turkey back into the Caliphate stone ages of Pashas, slaves, and repression of women's rights in that country!

And he had the gall to once compare himself with Ataturk, the former general who brought enlightened prosperity, above all literacy, to Turkey??! What a slap in the face.

I'm disappointed, to say the least. Now Turkey will probably never join the EU.

Law / Polish Graduate Working in Poland with GERMAN VISA? [27]

How he survived at a Polish university without knowing a word of Polish remains a mystery to me.
With his second-language English and theirs as well, sounds like high comedyLOL

News / Russian criticism of Poland - Soviet war memorial removal [325]

Russia has been a menace for several decades now! Putin is merely the most extreme and dangerous manifestation of a post-Communist society, beginning roughly in the late '90's going forward.

Ukraine, Crimea, Chechnia etc. are all danger signals that the Moscow aka the Kremlin cannot be trusted.

Many years ago, Soviet expert George Kennan wrote a definitive book on the Russian Revolution up through the death of Stalin and later developments with the advent of the Cold War.

Sadly, his hopes for the openness between East and West which eventually morphed into Glasnost, remain quaint dreams which seemed to have dashed on the rocks of dissolusionment with democracy.

What the future holds, I cannot say. But I remain optimistic.

Off-Topic / What's your connection with Poland? Penpals. [554]

@Alien, it's true however that Poland has contributed richly to our world, both in terms of science as well as the arts, cinema, and theater!

News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

Is the Church as powerful a political force in Poland as it is here in the US?
I'd imagine so, then again, it's been ever so long since last in Europe that perhaps things have changed some.

Life / In need of good Polish jokes about Polish culture, people, etc [228]

Only an observation, Gefreiter!
The cross-pollination between Poles and Jews is truly uncanny. After all, you guys were neighbors for so long. Yiddish borrowed as much from Polish as from High German dialects or Hebrew.

My wife's grandmother made kiszka and she was a Polish Jew. Latkas?? Also clearly of Polish origin.

News / TVP producer fired for allowing rainbow flag on the air... [244]

It's true though, Johnny!
A lot of even the civilized world up until the mid-20th century was
in essence illiterate.

Thanks to the herculean efforts of the US-Army during WW II, more Americans
than ever learned to read and write.

Off-Topic / Is this English phrase correct? [22]

Perhaps things have changed, but when I was last in England around fifteen years back or so, I noticed signs in which the apostrophe was plainly omitted in instances where here in the States it would have been written, e.g. "Stationers shop" etc.

Metaphors preached to the common folk, undoubtedly illiterates on the whole, who scarcely understood science much less biology. Biblical language made the unknown simply more palatable and comprehensible by "translating" it into stories they could understand.

The Catholic Church has been a hotbed of sexual perversion and abuse among priests for nearly a thousand years. It should therefore comes as little to no surprise that it has unfortunately been a source of hypocrisy aka double standard as well.

Life / In need of good Polish jokes about Polish culture, people, etc [228]

A Polish person related this joke to me about a psychiatrist, although frankly, it hardly seems generically Polish:

Patient: Doctor, my brother thinks he's a chicken!

Doctor: Oh really? Tell me, for how long has your brother thought he was a chicken?

Patient: For at least a little over a year.

Doctor: Over a year??! Why didn't you come to me sooner?

Patient: I would have, but we needed the eggs.

Life / Has feminism and lesbianism progressed in Poland? [645]

Back to the original thread question after all this time. I assume feminism has become more feminist and lesbianism more lesbian. This is most likely how it's "progressed"!

As to how it's evolved, I take it that straight Poles, which is to say a majority, have simply become more accepting, if not always tolerant in the watchful eyes of the Church.
