Genealogy / Do I look Polish? (my picture) [376]

there is a conspiracy that your organs might be sold, if you take the DNA test.

Conspiracy theories are rubbish; nobody sells your organs. DNA tests aren't perfect though; any information they give you is dependent on the number of customers any given service has from a particular ethnicity.

That means they can sometimes be very specific and they can sometimes be very vague.

Language / What is your biggest problem with Polish language? [158]

english speakers speaking Polish tend to reduce some vowels too much

Very much so. The same goes for Polish speakers when speaking English; to a British ear it can sound over-enunciated.

The harder to define languages have elements of both

Hence dozens of doctoral theses about Polish isochrony, most of them vehemently disagreeing with each other.

The jury's still out on this one.

basically arguing about, how where the syllable stress

More about how to classify the language. Stress-timed, syllable-timed or a third, harder to define, category that has aspects of both.

In music, it should be liberal.

Indeed it should.

Real Estate / About terminating my flat contract in Poland [23]

blackmailing landlords for stealing taxes,

Is that:

a. anywhere in this thread
b. 'blackmailing'

No, Deepak, it isn't.

There's also one key word in the OP's message that you haven't picked up on.

Welsh poetic (and lyrical) metrics can be very complicated and unique; that does sometimes lead to a very specific sound.

With Polish, there are also unique issues, specifically about prosody; linguists are split into different camps about how to classify it. I'm in the 'third' camp; the existing terms "syllable timed" and "stress timed" aren't adequate for categorising some languages, including Polish.

I know more about Polish

Evidently you don't.

The OP has been answered adequately; there is little or nothing the landlord can practically do.

Lista polecona should be more than OK, and nowadays if they've communicated already by email, it would be stretching it to say that notice in that format is invalid unless specified otherwise in a contract.

The dark "Ł" sound isn't much common, nowadays

There are still older people of a certain social class who use that sound.

Vanishing now though.

nobody seems to care about the proper diction,

What is "the proper diction"? Proper for whom?

the single exception might be the revival

There are frequent and sustained revivals.

I keep waiting for an extensive rediscovery of verismo

I would never want to see that any more than has already been. Provincial opera in the UK and to an extent France loves the veristi with a passion In Poland? It all depends of course on a. how tragic the dramatic heroine can be and b. whether or not Ewa Michnik's been anywhere near it. People like the limited repertuar here and of course in Warsaw, it depends what they're doing with Cardiff/Brussels for the obvious reason.

Opera Restored, however, works. Or did, since I don't think they're active now and must all be getting on a bit. Now if that were done in Poland. The clearly enunciated sounds of Polish would work so well with that.

This is wandering off topic though...

What can i do about this?

More importantly, what can he do? It would be difficult to sue, and provided you've given the specified notice you have the upper hand. It looks like the landlord is trying it on.

"Best effort" seems a very vague and ambiguous phrase to use in a contract.

Primary penultimate stress doesn't seem to have hurt Italian when it comes to opera

The consonantal clusters however do.

Russian opera has a similar problem, though fortunately less so, being a better language to sing in. Czech is the same; better to sing in, and of course Janacek's melodic structure is very different.

the style is from a time and musical period (middle 19th century) that audiences are at present less interested in exploring

It's a hugely popular period with much of the repertoire from then and of course significant revivals of lesser known works. Even Marschner, despite the orchestra size, something which isn't an issue with Moniuszko.

singing in Polish, because of the abundance of consonants and the second-last syllable accent

That's one reason why, sadly, Moniuszko's operas are less well-known than they might be.

Life / Arts & Crafts Stores in Warsaw, Poland? [18]

suppliers

People buy on Allegro which is a bit like EBay or Amazon Marketplace. There isn't an equivalent of, say, Habiknit, however a lot of towns now have a Flying Tiger where there are some craft supplies.

Work / Teaching Post in Zory (2600 zl per month after tax good?) [10]

Plenty of people do. The traffic close to Katowice can be busy in the rush hour, however not terrible. The main roads there are ok, much better than they used to be.

Unfortunately it's a road journey; commuting to Katowice by train from Zory is a bad idea.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

I've tried it in countries other than Poland, but presume it's pretty much the same.

It is. Here it's often associated with Russia and Ukraine, though some people here do make it at home and supermarkets often have it.

I love it. Shops in the U.K. sometimes have it now. Tastes great, not good for teeth though.

I found it fascinating that there were a majority of Protestants in a Polish-speaking village before WW1

Google Felicjanów, the one near Plock.

I really like Zaolzie in genera

It's a fascinating place, a sort of oddity with its own environment ang feeding.
