History / Let's talk about the POLISH ARMY [79]

grubas

No Poland doesn't need nuclear warheads. There were two countries that stood up to Germany before England and France declared war, that was Poland and Switzerland. Poland was unsuccessful but Switzerland maintained its sovereignty.

Poland should follow Switzerland's lead. Get rid of professional army and resurrect the AK in the form of a reserve citizen army, part time. Use them to defend homeland but in times of peace they can be used in national emergencies and maintain infrastructure. If NATO needs troops activate an AK unit for a 6 mo. or 12 mo. detail. Design and build your own weaponry, aircraft, armaments, etc. Poland doesn't need to compete with the latest weaponry like nuclear warheads.

Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

I'd like to know when Polak became an insult anyway. Did people forget what it even means. All Polak means is "person hailing from Poland"

So, in summary, please don't call me a Pollock, and please don't tell me any Polish jokes. And, in return, I will not use any ethnic slurs to address you or any other person or group, nor will I tell you offensive jokes about ANY ethnic group.

Some people spend half their life being "insulted".

Life / Cannabis / Weed in Poland... How much does marijuana cost per gram and how easy is to get it? [355]

smurf

1. harmless, once smoked in it's natural form
2. Not addictive
3. Not a gateway drug

1. Nonsense, no drugs are harmless.

2 & 3. It's a depressant. All drugs have side effects. Severity of side effects depends on the individual.

smurf

Plus it's the most peaceful drug ever, you'll never hear of a stoner getting arrested ifor fighting or hitting somebody or causing damage to property, unlike with alcohol

That's the problem, it's a depressant and what does one do when they're depressed? Withdraw.

Didn't you post something about lack of social success in Poland? Well maybe if you're a habitual mary jane user you may want to lay off for awhile and see if things change.

History / Polish civilization is older than English or French. Why do Poland follow them? [64]

but i never in my life heard of Polish interests. How is this possible? Especially when we know that Poland represent older civilization then England or France. /Hand on heart, i heard that earlier in past Poland had its own interests but today is different./

Your question about Polish interests shows that you are confusing politics with culture. Polish culture may be stronger and older than either France or England but politically Poland is much weaker due to foreign domination which weakened the country politically.

Life / Are Poles typically nasty people? [42]

Allison

I think most of the people on here are pretty nasty or at least neutral and I'm suprised because I've heard they are so nice

This is a typical online forum. People are anonymous. they write what they think, unlike in person when they will use social niceties.

But I am a Pole (confusion

You're not. You're American.

Get a grip.

Work / Mechanical engineer born in Poland, grew up the States. Go back to PL. How? [29]

what do you guys think?

Just do it and quit thinking about it (quit obsessing about the money). If that's where you want to be, than go for it. You're either going to love it or hate it, in which case you can move back to the States. If you love it the money won't matter.

USA, Canada / To move back to Poland from the USA or not to move back....that is the question [119]

Move to Poland, if you don't you'll always regret it. If it works out great, if it doesn't you'll learn to appreciate where you're from. You could always go back. Just expect to spend a bit of cash. Every time I've moved it cost me money. If you can afford it, I'd keep my house in the States and wait to see if a permanent move to Poland is what you really want.

Language / Do Poles prefer US American or UK English language? [147]

I've found many Poles really freaked out by black gehtto speech. Anybody on PF agree?

never heard of that. You are making things up again

It's not ghetto speech as much it is a separate American English dialect from the region of the South where they originally came from. America has different accents but dialects are rare, i can only think of three: Appalachia, South Louisiana Cajun and Southern Black. There may be more that I don't know of.

History / Poles as Iroquois of Europe [42]

The Iroquois developed a confederation of six tribes that were very powerful. The confederation was known for it's democratic institutions. The Iroquois were noted as fierce warriors but cannibalistic The would eat the body parts of the defeated Indian warriors. They'd make a feast out of it. I don't quite understand what Bismarck meant when comparing the Polish to the Iroquois.

Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

convex

I was under the impression that most Americans really don't care enough about Poles or Poland to actually use a slur against them.

True, Americans are ambivalent about Poles. They're invisible. Most Americans couldn't find Poland on the World Map.

Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

ShortHairThug,

When spoken by anyone from North America in fact it its ALWAYS derogatory, it was spread by the American Jew who propagated Polish Jokes eventually becoming synonymous with a word "Stupid" as in "You’re such a Polak."

Nope. In Chicago where I grew up, People of Polish origin either referred to themselves as Polocks, pollacks, however you want to spell it, or Polish. The term Pole was never used. The only derogatory term for Polish people that I know of was "DP" short for displaced person. In other words DP would stand for someone just off the boat.

Polish jokes come from established Polish people making fun of Polish people just "off the boat". Making fun of their ignorance about the "New World". Poles poking fun at other Poles. Polish people do have a sense of humor, though a bit different than the English or American. Other ethnic groups did the same thing.

Nigger is a low class black and is meant to be derogatory. Pollack or Polak is not a derogatory term.

News / "POLISH death camps" term used by "Parade Magazine" Anti-Polish Bigots [249]

there is no anti Polish bigotry in the United States. Most Americans don't know what a Pole is other than something to hang a flag on. Once Poles learn to speak fluent English, they melt into the general population (Nobody ever asks me what nationality my last name is, never).

The only time that a Pole with confront Polish jokes is from other Poles. There are 10 million Poles living in the US of A and if the society was discriminatory, they would have left a long time ago.

Love / Are Polish still very traditional when it comes to relationships? [31]

Izvirai

and whilst it doesn't bother him at all, he did say that its something his family will probably strongly disapprove of once they know how serious our relationship is and that we are planning a future together

Polish families have a lot of say so in everyday affairs. They're a PITA (painintheass). Steer clear and you'll be fine.

Salvation through suffering,

that's a Roman Catholic thingy. It's salvation through faith and charity. Unfortunately the Protestant Reformation didn't make it to Poland.

I do understand why some women get all emotional and fluffy when you declare your love to her infront of the community though. It means you're showing the whole world you're her guy and her guy alone. I get that. But with all these rules and financial agreements it feels like a form of control to me. Perhaps even a sign of distrust? The most important thing to me is equality, and I really can't see how a man and a woman are equals within the institute that's called marriage.

Marriage is a civil contract. I know this is going to be hard for modern women to swallow but because women are the child bearers they are at a disadvantage and need to be protected through contract law. the marriage contract was originally designed to keep the guy from "buggering off" after having a slew of kids and leaving the burden of family support to the local community. It's in your favor, ladies.

says that you'll love her forever. Noone can promise this.

Nonsense, of course they can. think commitment. Next time get a marriage contract, FROM THE GOVERNMENT.

that is true, but I have noticed that good men are not comfortable when their gf or wife makes more money than they do. The users, yes, they have no problem with it, but most men prefer to be the main bread winners.

Complete and utter nonsense. Guys are interested in good cooking and sex. It's the women who are interested in how much a guy makes. that's a women thingy. That's why so many successful women don't get married, they constantly compare their earnings with their husbands (Poor b*stards, don't have a chance).

Love / Are the Polish the most suspicious people in Europe? [73]

I was raised in Little Poland Chicago. My folks were suspicious of everybody including the neighbors. I finally went away to school in bumf*ck, USA and found the American people open and candid. They trust everybody. I had to learn to not be sooooo suspicious (ya know imagination can get away from a guy). But the answer is somewhere in the middle. Some suspicion is okay, just don't over do it.

Our friend here form bumblefack Spain is upset because his polish girlfriend dumped his as$ on suspicion of him cheating on her.

Being Spanish, he probably was. He didn't stand a chance with that super sleuth Polish Chick.

Havok, that's the problem with Polish People. Maybe that's why they've been invaded and occupied for the past two hundred years. No trust, no political consensus. You know that old adage, "Divide and conquer".

Genealogy / The last name is Krzywoszyja. Help? Am I Polish? [30]

Racist is an often misused term on this board. Racist means that a person believes that he or she is superior to another solely due to their race. A Caucasian cannot be racist towards another Caucasian.

Originally the National Guard and US Coast Guard were volunteer. No pay. It's what is called good citizenship. Poland should start demanding more of its citizens. You're building a nation.

News / THE ARMY OF POLAND - THE REALITY [493]

The performance of the Polish army in any future conflict will depend on one thing only.
To what extent they are betrayed.

If you believe this than there is no hope.

Avoid alliances with other countries and look to yourselves. Instead of fielding a professional army, construct Reserve National Guard Units in every province and county. Put most if not all 18-26 yr. olds under arms (rifles will do). Train the troops for the day if and when you are invaded by a foreign power. Supply your troops with small arms designed and constructed in Poland (rifles are easy to manufacture). Make most of your National Guard Engineering Units so that they can act in National Emergencies and also slowly rebuild your infrastructure. Engage the lowest elements of your society. Pull together.

"And nobody else did? ;)"

That's a broad question, you can write a book on every individual country's response to WWII. Poland has sustained too many slaughters in it's history. They need to learn how to avoid 'em. First thing you have to do is define the problem, once you do that the solution becomes a lot clearer.

"Poles don't trust Poles". Is a good start and how do you build trust? Give the lowliest peasant a rifle and tell him he's responsible if Poland gets invaded.

"gorliwość", is everything. That's what a pro army doesn't have.

Swedes and Spanish had fascist leadership. Quisling and Franco. Switzerland was a democracy and publicly opposed Germany. What was Poland, a democracy? In any event they opposed Hitler. If you're going to publicly oppose the guy you have to be prepared to fight.

Switzerland avoided two world wars because they didn't lay down and say "gee, which boxcar is for me", or "we're going to which gulag?" No they threatened to fight back.
