Life / 200zl mandat and 3 points for not wearing seatbelts? [75]

Or stupidity. In your case, maybe it's an inherited gene.

Look, I don't like to ping on you. It's just that seat belts save lives. Long before seat belts were mandatory in cars in the US, I installed them i cars I bought which didn't have them. Sadly enough, I can tell you too many stories about injuries or deaths of people who weren't wearing them, but for the moment I'll spare you the graphic details.

Buckle up. Always. Live long and prosper.

sorry, you are right. but it is a typical american thing to say....

That's true, but from the way he writes I think he's British. Either way, stupidity knows no boundaries.

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

There's no need to carry a gun in the US. I never did and I spent 12 years in the Marines, so I know my way around weapons. Very few Americans carry, and although there are a lot of gun related deaths in the US, almost all are in inner cities and are drug and/or gang related.

There's nothing even remotely related to gangs and street crime, say in Washington DC, New York or Los Angeles for example, in Poland. Why would anyone want to carry one on the street? Paranoia or insanity. There are no other reasons that I can think of.

Law / HOW LONG DOES THE APPLICATION FOR KARTA POBYTU TAKE TO PROCESS IN POLAND! [36]

The guy who handles my renewals is a certified translator whose English is excellent. However, once the paperwork leaves his office after the final decision for approval, it goes into the system. God only knows what takes so long, but it my case it always takes months after the decision to receive the actual card. I'm not saying it's ;ike this anywhere else, only that it's been true for me in Gdansk.

then you have to wait for this vignette on your passport or like a bank card?

I have a stamp in my passport saying that I can stay in Poland legally until I get the actual card. They also told me that the next time I apply it can be for 5 years or permanent residency since by then I will have been in Poland for six years.

They can give u for 1 or 2 years,

My first two cards were for one year. The second two were for two years. See what I wrote above for the next one.

Law / HOW LONG DOES THE APPLICATION FOR KARTA POBYTU TAKE TO PROCESS IN POLAND! [36]

It takes a while. Your situation is a little different than mine, but I'll you about my experiences during my four applications, once for my initial card and then three more times to renew it. In every case, the process was similar, although the last time I applied they asked me for a lot more documents than they had before.

I needed to have more than 45 days left on my visa when I came to Poland, and I've always started the renewal process more than 45 days before my card expired. Sometime before my card expired, usually a week or even a few days before the expiration date I received a decision then had to wait for 3-4 months before I actually got my new card. This time I started the process in September, got the decision in October and am still waiting for the new card which I should get either this month or next. Polish bureaucracy does not move swiftly.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

The food supply in America is tainted with growth hormones and high fructose corn syrup, and these very well could be the main culprits in the American obesity epidemic.

Another crock of BS. I won't bore you with any personal stories or bother to refute this. It's simply not true.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

PennBoy, I watched the video. I differed with you because I thought that you were referring to obese people, not just people who are overweight. Assuming that two out of three Americans are overweight (a figure I don't believe), that could include anybody who's even a few pounds heavier than than their ideal weight up to an 800 pound man. But I'll accept your point.

And it's still about calories burned versus calories taken in that makes people fat. There's no getting around this.

I see quite a lot of overweight people in Poland but vert few who are truly obese, and there's a difference between overweight, fat and obese. Unfortunately, there are far too many people in the US who are fat or obese and it's no wonder that so many of these people have health problems because of it.

That's because if 2/3 going on 3/4 of Americans are overweight

Patently untrue.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

It comes down to caloric intake and fat people don't know when to stop. They also are too lazy to exercise. This is not rocket science.

Amen, brother. You've hit the nail on the head.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

how often you eat

Not really. It's how much you eat no matter when you eat it.

when you eat,

Nope. It's not when. It's how much.

You dont think its a little suspect that US citizens all of a sudden became massive and the English are becoming massive too?

No, I don't. People in the US didn't suddenly become massive. They were like that when I was a kid a very very long time ago. I won't speak to the English because I have no experience with them.

For what it's worth, Australia passed the US last year in the percentage of overweight people per capita. Overweight means a few pounds, stones or kilos, however you choose to measure. Obese is way beyond that, and no matter which country you're talking about you'll find fat and obese people. Guess why.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

But Mc D's and KFC are not the issue in Poland, the issue is the genetically modified food, thats where the fat people get fat IMO.

People gain weight for only one reason. They take in more calories than their bodies can burn. It's simple. It's not about what you eat, although that does play a part in the process. If you eat too much, you'll gain weight. If you eat way too much, you'll get fat.

Work / The level of English of Polish teachers of English. What do you think of it? [101]

lovelybride:
No, dear child, you need to use the present perfect simple there: the time in the past of this action is unknown and unimportant, only it having happened at some point before now (or not) is important.
What were you saying about spelling? The word 'occurred' has a double r in it.

This is the only point I disagree with. You're right in saying it should the present perfect simple, but I read it as (has it) ever occurred to you that...Sort of a shortcut. I use the same form when speaking or writing to a friend-never in my classroom with students until they've gotten to a higher level and then only when talking about colloquial English.

Life / Polish water safe to drink? [50]

I drank tap water in Warsaw for six weeks then moved to Gdansk almost 4 1/2 years ago and have continued to do so. No problems. But if my tap water were brown, I'd buy bottled water at Biedronka. The only time I buy bottled water now now is if I want lemon or apple flavored water for an occasional change.

Blondie, where's this slope you have to walk up? Be grateful for the exercise.

Polonia / Polish Zloty Can't Exchange in France!.. [26]

but why would anyone go to France?

For the food, the culture, the history, the scenery, just to name a few. Paris is a beautiful city to visit for a week or so, then it's off to Brittany and Normandy, Alsace, and especially Provence. Villefranch-sur mer is a gem, and there are many more.

Travel / Why does everyone seem to hate LOT Polish Airlines? [380]

In almost 50 years of flying, I have never seen a fight on a plane. You must be a real piece of work to have done that.

I had arguments with employees of other airlines

Do you have an anger management problem?

Real Estate / Residential real estate values go down in Poland [455]

Me, for example: my place is only 50 metres but it's only me and the cats most of the time and I can walk to work in ten minutes

My place is also 50m but it only takes me five minutes to walk to work. When I think about the houses and condos I owned in the US, I think about all the uncessesarily wasted space.
