History / Poles should apologise to Ukrainians first [487]

Now you're the one being an idiot. You think Poland would send 2 percent of it's GDP as military aid to Ukraine without embracing ukranian nationalists?. (who are in government and in the military.) Times change and thanks to the ruskis our brotherhood and alliance has been cemented for decades if not centuries.

And yes the Boykos and Lemkos I know in Aus are Ukri nationalists, are friends with poles, and hate russia and putin with a passion.

It's the symbolism that matters, and the aim is to bring poles and ukranians together in our shared european home. From Kharkiv to Lisbon. Your aim on this forum is to drive us apart.

has nothing to do with cursed soldiers which has nothing to do with ukraine

I take back what I said, it seems there was a ceasefire between WIN and UPA in 1945, with joint military actions attacking NKVD and other communist scum.

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atak_na_Hrubiesz%C3%B3w

These are the parts of polish-ukranian relations that need to be celebrated and focused on, if the AK commanders could forgive the UPA commanders who participated in civilian massacres and work with them, then so can present day poles and ukranians unite.

What is this apology obsession?

It's called being smart and strategic, you think if the Israelis had to apologise first to the germans to get the benefits that they did, (for the rich jew landlords during the weimar crash etc) they wouldn't have done it?

That is why I still claim - Poles as a much older and mature nation should apologise first.

Yes that is what i wrote agreeing with you in post 30 in case you missed it. But that has nothing to do with cursed soldiers which has nothing to do with ukraine. what is more relevant is the communist army and intelligence services which expelled Ukrainians from our new territories shortly after ww2

Stop your whataboutism, unless the nkvd kill squads sent to hunt the cursed soliders were ukrainian, you are straying off topic.

Thousands were murdered, other thousands were allowed to flee.

Let's be more precise, hundred - hundred and fifty thousand were brutally murdered, including women, children and babies, and three hundred - three hundred and fifty thousand fled before they were brutally murdered. Standard definition of a genocide, very similar to the Armenian Genocide. It really should be reffered to as the Polish Genocide instead of the Volyhn Tragedy which is what it currently is on Wikipediass.

Banderites came to the conclusion that the only way to deal with Poles was to remove

And they were wrong. That's what modern day Ukraine needs to agnowledge.

Today Poland needs a similar gesture concerning Ukraine.

I agree with the thesis of this thread, but for practical and national interest reasons.
Kania and Konfaside are reacting from a romantic, stubborn, polish nature, problem is Ukrainians are the same, so there will be deadlock until someone takes to first step to dance. The history that Pawian details happened first, so Poland should be the first to show regret/apologise. The Volyhn and other genocide was the most recent and the most atrocious, so Ukraine should be the last to apologise but their contrition should be expressed in the strongest possible terms.

In Zelensky polish speech commemorating our Independence Day, he called Poland our big sister, and that's what we are. A big sister apologises first, instead of bullying the smarkac brother to say sorry.

Poland is the stronger, therefore it is our duty and privilege to apologise first, that's all we have to do. They have to apologise, acknowledge the genocide, dig up mass graves with tens of thousands of dead, bury them, change their whole educational curriculum, destroy the reputation of the actual leaders that ordered the massacres. A very hard task, but helped by the fact that Poland holds the whip hand in accession to the EU. I don't care about Bandera, who was in prison at the time, they can keep him but the actual people who were involved need to be splattered with historical contempt.

Why is this more important than apology to turks/czechs etc?

Because Ukraine holds the key to the emergence of Poland as a major power in Europe, as germany was the patron state for Poland in the EU, and benefited greatly from it, so we too will be for Ukraine, but in a more brotherly, less condescending manner. The fact that there is a shared history of the Polish-Lithuanian-Ukraninian-Belarusian Commonwealth helps. At Davos last year the Ukrainians were claiming the constitution and multi-ethnic/cultural nature of the commonwealth as for themselves as well, that's a great sign of accepting the positive aspects of our shared glorious history.

The reconciliation process should be driven forward by the religious class and then handed over to the political class.

IMO, at the moment, Konfa is as close to PO as to PiS,

Yes this is what everyone is forgetting, it's 50/50 who they form goverment with. . As for them refusing to be in coalition and waiting, there is too much money to be made to do that.

Crticism of Ukrainians is OK but not during a war with a deadly enemy

The same imbecilic thinking that kept katyn massacre suprressed during the war and aided stalin. don't be stupid. being constructively critical helps our allies be better.

But in Poland a lot of people glorify soldiers of Brygada Świetokrzyska who colluded with Nazi Germans

The difference is those people are not the highest levels of the polish goverment and military and Brygada swietokrzyska are not lauded as liberators of the nation in school text books.

but as a leftist you would reject that source right away,

haha he's no leftist but merely a neo-liberal. His views are as bland and comformist as any western corporation. Though previously he posted that poor people should not have children so that makes him a despicable eugenicist as well.

Nothing simpler that roll it back into the bin. Just like that.

How naive. Extreme nationalism is very hard to put back into the bottle once released, besides it's their most recent history fighting against the russian imperialism in ww2. Celebrating Bandera and OUB-B has been taught in schools since 2004 as part of a plan to create a ukranian identity and state separate from russia.

What figures and movements do you suggest replacing this to cement ukranian nationalism and identity?

Give our land back first!

What land? they claim it was originally their land that poland conquered in the 14th century! You know, that's why the ukris lived there..

how a civilised country can refuse the burial of the dead?.

Who claimed Ukraine was civilised? As I said, we hold all the cards after the war, and no burials and truth telling and reconciliation = No EU membership. It's a pretty strong hand and the Ukris will have no choice but to fold. Also changes to education curriculum showing crimes and fascist nature of UON-B

one link that proves your ridiculous claim that they acknowledge the Volhyn atrocities to be a genocide.

I said that during the church ceremony it was stated that it was a genocide, and obv with these diplomatic events the ukranians would have had knowledge of what was going to be said, it is only first step.

Ukraine has been an independent state for over 30 years, so WHEN will this next step be

And this is the first time in 30 years that relationships have been good enough to have hope that there will be a next step. Yes it might take another 10 years.

Don't you think it's a bit insensitive to demand apology NOW for the past when they are being murdered by our common enemy russia? Yes after the war when we hold all the cards in their admission to the EU is appropriate.

I see a it's a certain PSL voters time of month, on the rag and bitc**ng and moaning. Number 1 who cares what the PM said, he has no power. No 2 at the 80th anniversery of Volyhn genocide there was Zelensky and highest representatives of Ukranian church, and during the ceremony the polish cardinal called it a genocide and they accepted the wording, so it is progress and exhumation and burials will be next step. As for apology, is meaningless unless covered with other actions such as the above and also changes in what they teach the next generation of ukranian school kids.

Anyway I think we should be bigger party and show regret/apologize for betrayal of ukranian state by signing peace treaty with bolsheviks, and also cultural repression of ukranian religion and language afterwards, it is small apology and would make their big apology for GENOCIDE easier.

History / Life in communist Poland - personal relations [503]

Evidently the money made it to them safely through the mail.

the apparchiks at the post office would have taken it. i call bs.

My relatives would send salt pork, bacon and dried beef to them

really? in the mail?

By now (early 1960s) some of the older generation were dying off.

What you mean was it the 1860-1880s migrant wave?

free and democratic US has now become the USSR 2.0

Partly true.

You can't put such vague, general questions

One relates to EU law having supremacy over national law the others are specific.

national debate first

poland check

re your point on people power vs the gov having more power, the whole point of a referendum is to give the goverment the legitimacy of the people to hold that power and make that decision. ie gay marriage in ireland.

the gay marriage question in poland referendum is pretty specific ie change of constitution, as is the abortion question.

- do you support turning off the internet

I don't think that one will swing percentage points towards a electoral turnout, ie election victory.

great gosc wydarzen ep on polsat news vice minister of culture and lviv major youtube.com/watch?v=4Mt1wU65jp4

women lewica posels going off the deep end again, calling the constitutional tribunal fake and accusing them of legalising torture of women.

after listening to the rmf morning radio star i reckon PiS should do a couple of questions in the referendum along with the election.
- do you support the mandatory migrant pushback into Poland by European Union/Commision?
- do you support a constitutional right to abortion?/or loosening right to life rights as enshrined by the constitution?
- do you support gay marriage? Or LGBT+ sexual identity being taught to children?

Where are you taking this bullsh1t from? lol

It was a survey with different wording that was talked about on wpolityce/wpolsce, telewzja republika etc. the question was along of the lines of do you support the EU in it's current form/the actions of the EU, rather than membership question.

but still it didn't put Poles off supporting the EU (92% of support for EU membership

It's under 50 percent now, thanks to the 'rule of law' interference and fines and the mandatory migrant push.
