Learning a local language is not assimilation. Spies and Latino gangsters do that but nobody claims that they are assimilated.
My definition of assimilation...1. Loving the new country as much as you used to love the one you were born and raised in. 2. Your loyalty is 100% to the new one. Anything else is irrelevant. Even fluency in language as that skill is often impossible to acquire in spite of our best intentions. Like figure skating at 60+.
Europe wanted to assimilate as didn't. Look at Germany or Austria!

Tell me about it! I get off the train at Gdansk-Oliwa and want to take a dump. No restroom. The word panic does not describe it adequately.
FYI, that place is a major tourist destination because of the cathedral and the organ. They even have a restaurant with "American" in its name.
I am not surprised. In my opinion, Poland is for those who are emotional about the place. Poland is not Italy - which may not be a bad thing. Nobody sane in Poland wants Venice there and a million daily "look here" tourists.

I moved to the US in 1967 when the Vietnam war was in full swing and I was subject to the draft. Your personal risks while in Russia would be infinitely lower - if any. Just another opportunity here to unload on the man.

When I came to the US in the summer of 1967, I would say I am Russian. I got me a free pass to the beach in Glenco that day.

The strange thing about nostalgia trips like the one I took 5 years ago is that those are best done alone. Then you are free to do all kinds of weird things without asking your traveling partner.

When I visited that church, I was so impressed with the singer that I waited till she came down and invited her for tea. We had a nice conversation till well after closing. Then I walked her home and never saw her again.
My point is that no place is ever boring. You are.

I just walked into a school and asked if I could talk to their English class. I will never forget that experience. At their request, a one-time, one-hour thing became 5 times that.
I also went to see a priest in Radom to ask how he can reconcile the difference between what the Vatican says and what the Polish government does about illegals. It was memorable, too,
BTW, even as an atheist, I appreciate the magnificent beauty of the Polish churches, including the one in Radom where I received my first communion.

As far as I know, Russians didn't refuse to sell their coal to Poles. It's the Poles who refuse to buy Russian coal in support of "democracy" somewhere else. I am so proud...
