News / Poland says no to flood of Immigrants [670]

@Maf, it depends on whom you talk to.
The Swedish press is obviously not thrilled about having them there.
Yet, I've heard other reports from Swedes with no particular axe to grind!

News / Poland says no to flood of Immigrants [670]

As I've explained countless times, Rich, Sweden is a highly industrialized country,
with a low birthrate, which is desperately in need of foreign labor as there is so little
homegrown work force left as there was in former times.

Somalis seem to fit the bill; they're cheap, they often know English from their home country,
and they're willing.

Actually, I met someone from Somalia here in Fort Lee who was visiting
with his friends from Stockholm. After I addressed him in Swedish, he replied
rather embarrassed in halting English, telling me that while he was expected to
at enroll in an informal, FREE Swedish language course sponsored by the Swedish
gov't., people flat refused to speak to him in Swedish and so was forced to speak English lol

@Rich, China and Japan are a essentially monoracial, culturally homogeneous societies,
quite in contrast to those multi-ethnic. highly industrialized countries such as Germany or the US.

However Japan has a limited immigration culture, all but exclusively from Korea and Southeast Asia,
who by all accounts are treated as were the traditional "wetback" Mexican here at home.

China is a tremendous country, larger even than North America and second only in land mass to Russia.
It's need for outside labor therefore is for all intents and purposes non-existent.

@Rich, immigrants, like taxes, are a necessary, if at the same time unavoidable, evil!
Don't you know anything about capitalist economics 101?

Unfortunately, there'll always remain certain sectors of the industrialized world economy
in which jobs can only be filled by Third-world, no longer even First-world, foreigners.

Spot on, Maf, as usual!
Continental Europe, I include Britain here, is not the equivalent melting pot culture
of the United States. It's downright naive to the point of childish to expect traditionally
homogeneous societies such as Germany, Poland or Sweden, for example, to suddenly
fling their doors wide open to non-European, Third World immigrants whose social, not to mention
religious, values are so markedly different from their own.

Sure, we're all human beings whose core values revolve around some form of family unit, language,
community etc. Nevertheless, it's completely unfair as well as unrealistic to place a bunch of Iranian
Muslims into a small to medium sized Polish city, and wonder why there's resentment among the native
locals.

Such a scenario's as unfair to the migrants as it is to the local Poles.

Amen, Korvinus! That's tellin' 'em.
@Rich, you continually lump all immigrants into one basket.
That's like throwing the proverbial baby out with the bathwater.

Off-Topic / What's your connection with Poland? Penpals. [554]

(Hans) Frank though was most emphatically an occupier, rather than
a resident of Wawel. Moreover, it seems certain historical facts have
escaped you, namely, that the Nazis intended to conquer present-day
Poland FOREVER, not merely on a temporary basis!!

Finally, Hans Frank bore the fear-inspiring title of "Gauleiter", thinking
of himself very much as an all-powerful potentate.

Off-Topic / What's your connection with Poland? Penpals. [554]

"Resident" in essence refers in English to the occupant or occupants
of a specific dwelling or domicile.

"I reside at..." signifies that one lives, that is, occupies the place in which
they have established their living space.

A residence can either be permanent or temporary though, this is true.

"Junglist"?? You mean information about Carl Jung?
Hmm, wrong church, wrong pew, it would seem.

@Vlad, objectively speaking, is Ukrainian closer to Polish than Russian?
I was told once that the closest living Slavic language to Polish is actually Czech,
numerous false friends notwithstanding:-)

The thread title could have gone either way without context clues, Ziemowit!
As far as my English goes, try me some time.

Perhaps the poster means "What's LEFT OF Chopin's Warsaw>"
But that's only a guess here, as English probably isn't the person's first language.

Life / Any good Polish films to watch? [112]

I'm currently watching "Odjazd" (The Departure) from a few years back. It's engrossing, if sobering, to say the least and concerns the Hitler years and Poland's occupation.

Much of the dialogue is both in Polish and German, without foreign subtitles, as best I can gather. Therefore, not sure how foreign audiences might receive it.
