Travel / Poland wildlife and similar wild life where you live. [243]

Maybe all the farms are a good supply of food and they'd have to fatten up for the long cold winters?.

Where do frogs go during the winter? ha ha ha, they probably hibernate? but where? Hhhmm...

Actually where do all the animals go for winter, some severe winters it can be as low as minus 30,
sure to be outside in that would mean death
and the ground is too hard to dig,
unless they do it during the warmer seasons. hhmmm...

Q. Where do frogs go in winter?
A. Different species have different stategies for surviving winter. Northern leopard frogs, for example, pass the winter at the bottom of deeper lakes, far beneath the ice. They settle quietly on the lake bottom in deep water. They stay concealed behind a log or other debris to escape predators. Other types of frogs may hibernate under leaf litter.

Moles yep , got plenty of them in the garden , although the cats thin them down now

Yeah, there are lots of mole hills round here, I try not to make mountains out of them (terrible joke, I know).
They are cute wee fellas.

I read a guy in Germany recently plugged his garden in to the mains electricity to electrocute the moles but he accidentally killed himself in the process.

Moles in the Polish language is kret

.but my fella was much brighter green

I can't find anything.

I keep meaning to set up a bird feeding place

Me too, There is information about feeding birds in Poland (if there is any difference?)

i found a bright green critter that i am sure was a tree frog , didn,t know they had em in Polska...

Like this fella?

Another thing I thought about is that there a lot of moles here in Poland.
I don't think ireland has any moles, I could be wrong but I googled it and a lot of people think so.
Ireland also has no snakes.

This might be a silly question but is there any winter animals in Poland?.
I have noticed very brightly coloured orange breasted birds that I have never seen before.

I think it might be Stonechat (Saxicola torquata) but the breast is more orange.

A good site for birds in Poland is this Polish Birds Directory

wildrover:

I should wait till it gets a bit warmer tho , its a wee bit cold in a tent right now....

When i read your posts about where you live it sounds like the perfect place for camping, is it?
And music, can you play any instruments Wildrover?
I can't any more but I am a great singer after a few beers, well at least I think so :)

What would be the chances of seeing what animals there?

pawian

They are monsters, I have only seem bugs that big in Zimbabwe/Cambodia.

Scottish pearls are moe valuable due to their rarity.

Very interesting, How can you tell if they are Scottish?
ha ha ha, I am picturing them with a Scottish accent :)

i am a bit of a muppet when it comes to computers...but i will give it a go...thanks...

The reason I joined this forum was to learn more about computers and this tecnilogical age we live in, and trust me if I can do it anyone can :)

I would like very much to see your

the deer , boars , insects and stuff running around my garden...maybe in the summer you can all come round and see em for yourself....

And I might take you up on the open invitation and go over to you in summer.
I very much want to travel, so be warned when making invitations :)

Having said that, they come in all colours mostly white, brown and black.

And just out of curiosity how much would you get for one?.
I am thinking the answer might be the reason they are near extinction or would it be more environmental?

You took that photo, do you have a good zoom?

I would take a photo like that from a safe distance ha ha ha.
I respect snakes, really I do and i think they are beautiful but I am scared of them but not as much as they would be of me.

Prince, Wow and they have the new Ipod things too.
I never think of Polish seals probably because I live in the south.
Lovely animals :)

mostly in Ireland and Scotland

I honestly never heard of them.
So would you know the difference between a fresh water pearl and a salt water one?

i am in Drawski park

Show us a photo of the area, please?
Is it mountainous or flat, forested or agricultural land?

How big is a Wild boar and do they have tusks?.
There is that thing about a wounded boar being a real danger to humans.

Is that en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drawie%C5%84ski_National_Park - Drawieński Park Narodowy?

"Animal life is very rich. There are 129 species of birds, 40 species of mammals, 7 species of reptiles and 13 species of amphibians." (Wiki).

Apparently there are some times wolves and bears here in Beskid Makowski.
I have seen several dear, a snake, a lizard, no wild boar yet, along with a load of different coloured birds depending on the season.

Oh and fire fly, I was surprised to see them, I did not know they were in North Europe.

Anyone any stories?
I heard mad stories last night, when I was east of Tarnów,
about a child's parent being late to pick his kid up and as he drove to meet his son,
the father could see wolves on either side of the road, surrounding the boy, hairy, scary stuff.
Are there many wolf attacks in Poland, I know the wolf has been demonised, i think they are a very beautiful animal but I wouldn't want my child gobbled up by one.

Hey Polonius3,
I hoped you would join this thread as the only thing remotely similar on here is your thread about the north east of Poland, which is a wonderful place, well to be honest I drive through it often, on the way to Lithuania.

Augustuw looks like a wonderful place, like Carrick-on-Shannon in Ireland.
And the area around Białastok has some of the best places to see Bison and other wildlife in their natural habitat, the primeval forests.

As for głuszce, is this what you mean?

I hear lots of stories about the wild life here, it's always enjoyable.

I see that a lot of people on here are interested in this topic as shown by the Bison thread, so to broaden it a little perhaps we could also include similar animals where you live.

This is from bramkaz another very informative PF poster. Wildlife in Poland.
So I will start with these, just as to get it going as to what is in the wilderness in Poland.

Lynx.
Wolves.
Moose.
Stalks.
Wild Boar.
White tailed Eagle.
European Beaver.
Brown Bear
And snakes

Again from from bramkaz and really worth checking Snake slide show. Please feel free to add as many animals as you like, provided they also exist in Poland. I could not find anything on this subject, so I hope no one minds me starting a thread about it, if a thread already exists please merge and thank you.

Love / Do Polish Women age well? [153]

Hello RebelOReilly,

Here is the way i see it,
I am from Ireland too.
Ireland is very humid because of the water and this acts as a natural moisturiser for people's skin (a killer for arthritics).
Here in Poland it is a much dryer climate and this dries the skin and makes older people look well drier.

Sure it takes 3 hours for clothes to dry here and it takes 3 days back in Ireland.

By the by i know in general a lot of women don't age well,

You have just signed your death warrant.

Real Estate / House prices in Poland to drop more or rise again? [228]

cost of construction

This is a very good point.

elected on the promise of providing 3 million new apartments over the next 4 years,

All politicians lie.
Didn't Tony Blare promise something similar?

Compare Poland's situation with neighbouring Ukraine

This is not a good comparison, at all.
I know people who have invested in building offices in Kiev at 15% yearly returns.
They were lucky to get out with their initial investment, basically the corruption was too bad.
One of the rules of capitalism "High risk can equal high profit"
But there are many more reasons why you can't really compare the two.

There is not much here, for Warsaw anyway, to suggest prices are rising or falling.

Are people still moving in to Warsaw i.e. Is the population of Warsaw still increasing?.

Be sensible, hope for the best, but prepare for the worst and you will be right.

I am usually sceptical of people on the other side of the planet giving advise but I have to hand it to you.
I agree with ash1972, within the next year we will be able to see more effects and if there is a down turn in the market, it is time to buy.

Real Estate / House prices in Poland to drop more or rise again? [228]

but as far as I can see at the moment they will not give mortgages to locals, and are very slow if not also refusing to give money to foreign investors.

They now want 30% deposit, yes.
And it has always been a long and difficult procedure for foreigners, so nothing new there.

What bank(s) are you dealing with, and are they lending to locals to, say, buy new houses (a matter close to your heart I'm sure!)?

They are giving loans but the 30% deposit is required.
This will slow people down and there has recently been a a surge of people getting mortgages, just before this 30% thing came into effect.
But as far as I can see this is healthy for the country, people do not live on credit here and tend to save their own money.

I am not saying that prices will not be effected, they will more than likely.
I just get info back from Ireland and I do not think the same thing will happen here.

I am currently dealing with Kredyt Bank, (it's like pushing wet rope, up hill).

Real Estate / House prices in Poland to drop more or rise again? [228]

they will continue until the end of 2009. Starting 2010 it will start going up if the economy picks up.

What are you talking about?
What do you base the 2009/2010 on?
I don't belive you have a clue about what you are talking about.

I think that the whole Euro thing for Poland will be a mess it's to soon but we shell see!

Read above.

From what I understand (correct me if i'm wrong), poland has already blown their initial target for adopting the euro due to relative volatility of the zloty?

Yes this is true.
The next target date for the Euro is 2012.
Hungary recently had huge problems and the Polish Zloty was effected greatly by it.
So Poland are taking the 2012 deadline for the Euro very seriously so the currency will not be so open to huge fluctuations.

I think people here are not being very optimistic, they are aware that they are tied in but the economy is healthy and banks are still lending.

I know what you mean though, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

value of the zloty

It is a generally belief here that the Zloty will increase in value.
But i am not an expert.

Poland won't be immune from the slump but will emerge much, much quicker.

And by the looks of it it will dip a lot slower and not so low.

News / Dalai Lama says: "POLAND HAS RETAINED ITS SPIRIT" [77]

I don’t growing up in a totally homogeneous country this is probably as alien concept for me as communism must be for you.

Possibly.

totally homogeneous country

Without looking, it must be Canada?

(And before anyone starts jumping down the guy's throat, these are his experiences)

Why do you think they called themselves Soviets instead of Russians?

A kind of "in with the new out with the old"?

News / Dalai Lama says: "POLAND HAS RETAINED ITS SPIRIT" [77]

That’s not me talking,

I know. I was not threatening you at all, i just wanted to tell you of my experiences.

Yap that’s a B**** :-).

Yes, it is difficult for me to understand communism.
But I can see similarities wherever people have been conquered.
Ah yes, Dalai Lama says: "POLAND HAS RETAINED ITS SPIRIT".
And in Africa too, I personally understood or empathised with the blacks in South Africa than the Whites, something you don't forget.
(It must be noted that there are very many fine white people in S.A.)

Don’t kid yourself it’s almost the same and never out of love.

If you mean it was not out of "true" communist brotherly love, well yeah.
Maybe it was just a different way of doing the same thing?
But boy oh boy, communism is different.
