News / THE ARMY OF POLAND - THE REALITY [493]

The propaganda that Russia cranks out is stunning.

We're talking about freedom of the press though. If you're looking at manipulation of the large media organizations, look no further than the U S of A. Completely towing the line on the Fed. Sometimes it's sad to watch.

Anyway, saying that the press in Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt, Egpyt, Sudan, or Belarus is more free than Russia... that's insane. I mean, Tajikistan ranks higher than Russia in the RWB rankings. That is completely mad.

You can't call the former PLO now HAMAS state or the Arab theocracies/kingdoms democracies.

The elections in Gaza were deemed fair...granted that was under occupation...but I digress. I mean Lebanon in my post.

Regarding Russia...far more democratic than authoritarian...not to say there aren't problems, but seriously.

News / Should Poland made an energy bridge deal with Russia? [122]

In Polands interest, who is a more stable partner, Belarus, or Germany?

Being an occupied country for 50 years...there wasn't much choice!

Mutually beneficial... There wasn't a lot of screaming for the US and Brits to take their armor out while 4000 Soviet tanks were sitting next door. US had a nice forward operating country, and Germany didn't have to pump money into strategic defense.

News / Should Poland made an energy bridge deal with Russia? [122]

Strangely enough, it bypasses Poland even though some claim there is a blooming friendship between neighbors. When time is right a gas tool will be used against Poland by Germany.

Look on the other side. They could continue the overland round with all the risk that entails, or bring the gas directly to their customers in Western Europe along a pipeline that is 100% under their control. Not only that, but they have the capital to invest in the pipeline today, no more transit fees in the future, only maintenance costs which are already being paid on the overland route.

The Russians will sell gas to anyone willing to pay market prices. If by weapon you mean "no longer sell at 1/3 of market price", then yes, it will probably be used as a weapon.

The EU is Germany....for decades Germany build and paid the EU..

Well...that and Germany never had to worry about paying for strategic defense. That might have saved a bit of cash....

Life / Has feminism and lesbianism progressed in Poland? [645]

that's a joke. I have lived in Poland and almost every other person I see wears a cross.

That's partially true in the countryside...not so much here in Wroclaw at least.

Real Estate / House prices in Poland to drop more or rise again? [228]

Only for innner city apartments and houses, apartments will continue to drop in the larger cities but everything else should remain reltively stable..

The bubble was in city property. The stuff in the countryside never went up at ridiculous levels, so it won't drop by ridiculous levels.

Wouldnt they always in most countries?

Yea, it's sad.

slow recovery in the property sector

Recovery? There was a correction. Interest rates are going to go up, less people will borrow money...

Love / 20% of adult Poles are single and live with Mummy! [241]

Circumstances play their part. Italians also love being with family, eating meals and talking. There's no great shame in wanting to live alongside your family.

Has more to do with the long term unemployment rate and the price of real estate... and mamas cooking might have something to do with it.

History / PiƂsudski, like Hitler and Stalin (according to some Lithuanians) [144]

Torq: Exactly - whether Ukraine joins NATO or not is a Ukrainian decision and Russia should
not interfere in the affairs of an independent country.

On the other hand, when a border country joins a military alliance which is viewed with suspicion, it becomes an issue.

It is the Ukraine's choice, of course, and their responsibility to deal with the fallout of making that choice.

Real Estate / House prices in Poland to drop more or rise again? [228]

Avalon: There are builders and then there are builders.

Sorry, didn't want to insinuate that all new constructions are sub par. But I think that you can probably agree that there are quite a few "builders" that hopped on the bandwagon and delivered a bad product...and that quite a few buyers were more interested in just getting into a place as opposed to buying into a quality place.

FUZZYWICKETS: it's great that your apt. is "rock solid" and that it can withstand scud missles and tank rounds, but honestly, a lot of people say that about apts./houses out here, and i just don't see the point of it.

That is, rock solid compared to the new places that are having problems with walls and foundations cracking.

FUZZYWICKETS: my family, and all of my friends back home in Duhmerica have wooden houses. 2X4's, plywood, sheet rock, some insulation, i juz. dom. unless you're anticipating tornadoes or hurricanes, what's the point of spending all that money on brick and concrete and whatever else people use out here to build their........fortresses.

I guess it depends on where you place your priorities. Houses where I come from are brick... but then again, winters are cold and spring can get windy. It's nice to have a house that you can keep warm...and that won't have structural problems after 25 years.

Asset bubbles don't usually dramatically pop, they deflate...And usually slower than the inflation happened. Prices were going up 15-25% year on year from '04-'08, should drop by about the same amount (the biggest 20%, the first, is already gone). The interesting thing about this bubble though, is that the government will try to fight against it.

Wroclaw Boy: those fantastic gothic rock solid buildings in the cities now theres a tempting prospect. Have you ever heard "they just dont make them like that anymore"? the same applies to build quality, developers are constantly looking for corners to cut in order to increase profit.

My apartment was built in the late 1800's, rock solid, no problems. I'd buy a place like this without thinking twice about it. As far as the panelaks, most of the ones that I have seen have been alright...Especially the low rise ones <6 stories. Biskupin has some really nice low rise buildings. I think they get a much worse rap than they actually deserve.

There are quite a few unloved children in the US who would love to be adopted. Why are you looking at Poland in particular?

Food / What exactly is Polish Bread? [90]

Anyone have any recollection of this or a recipe? My Babcia was off the boat so she learned this while living in Bialystok.

I'd be interested to know as well. Sounds great.

Most Polish breads are too soft and bland for my liking :(

No, there are Czechs and Moravians. No self respecting Czech would call themselves a "Bohemian" :)

Many seemed to have missed colonial times so much, that they moved to countries that colonized them.
