Food / Is brain-damaging vegan fad growing in Poland? [176]

I agree to this, but not entirely - it is not that easy to have a balanced diet without meat, as meat was originally in our diet and should be there. Not too much though.

A lot of veggies are overly sentimental about animals, in my experience most veggies see nothing wrong with eating meat. The problem is the farming of meat and the frequency of eating it. Animals were not meant to be grown in near factory conditions requiring a cocktail of medicines and applications to keep them outwardly healthy. The results of this intensive rearing has lead to many problems from the vCJD problems in Britain to the "accidental" introduction of carcinogenic chemicals into the food chain (Germany). Meat should not be cheap.

News / A devestating verdict on the Polish church [279]

Nothing loose about my answers, you brought the concept of pure to the thread I understood what you wrote and answered accordingly. If you are not sure of your own words don't expect others to explain them back to you.

I didn't say that the clergy are intermediaries between man and god I said that they are no purer than you or I as their bible tells them.

I repeat Christian clergy do not claim to be purer than others. I would like you to point to where you believe that they say they are purer than others.

Anyway I can spot two errors in what you wrote; an intermediary doesnt have to be pure and they dont forgive sins. I was talking about all Christians not just Catholics.

Barney, define pure please.

Well I used it in the same context as you.

I still dont see where the clergy claim to be purer than others.

Clergy DO pretend to be pure

No, Clergy dont pretend to be pure that would be blasphemous. According to all Christian churches the clergy are no purer or holier than you or I.

National governments do not pretend to be pure.

True they dont, what is your point?

Some say he was murdered by the mafia because he wanted to tackle the financial corruption and hypocrisy of the church.

We have all read Yallop's books, another conspiracy theorist, next you will be telling us all about the albino monk...

if they want to have respect and credibility they should take care of this

That is exactly what they are doing, which part dont you understand.

if you say that nobody gives a damn what secular non-believers think, then why the secular non-believers should take any interest in what the believers think? If so, then all religious symbols and national holidays and everything religious should be removed form public spaces etc.

This is a perfect example of a zero sum equation which came to fruition under Pol Pot. Evangelical atheists/agnostics always resort to this stupidity. Of course the state and Church should be separated, the state is not the arbiter of cultural identity or anything approaching it so saying that historical, religious symbols displayed in public are somehow representative of the state is just a lie, gross stupidity or Stalinism.

Why give to an institution which only now has begun to instigate reforms and implement measures which seek to curb laundering?

You can say exactly the same about National governments facilitating offshore banking.

Did anyone else apart from Aphro point out that its good that this criticism came from within the church?

Was the communist organ concerned with the Church's development? Of course not.

In Ireland there was the exact opposite of persecution, what should be state institutions were handed over to the Church and it failed. The political influence has delivered nothing of substance either materially or spiritually, a bit like the evangelical movement in the US.

The Church should play a role in advancing the wishes of the flock, a role that is political by nature they should not however be allowed to dominate that debate.

Remember not only was Christ the first Catholic He was also the first Socialist.

I have no problems with Vegetarians

Oh I know, BTW the quote is spot on.

The biggest problem that Vegans face is getting enough B complex vitamins especially B12. A lack of B12 leads to dementia like problems which can become permanent if a tipping point is reached.

There are also problems associated with meat eating.

i post whatever i like, i donated some money and they tolerate me. I may donate some more in the future. I think you should contribute too, because this is a pretty cool site. I have this feeling that you're on the mission or something.

Well, aren’t you great..........what I do with my money is my concern.

Looking for stats on perception in notoriously difficult given the nature of the subject matter. I gave my opinion, you engineered a dispute because you are too stupid to understand a few commonly used words, if English were not your first language I could understand.

My opinion is based upon travelling, reading and talking. When reading start with the idea of manifest destiny and work from there. When talking to people you can’t help but notice that Americans usually self apply a hyphen, Europeans usually talk about nation.

Travel / Poland wildlife and similar wild life where you live. [246]

My neighbor has land adjacent to mine and had literally hundreds of beautiful, tasty, large carrots this year without any cover or spray. All natural.

That is so lucky.
I have good carrot friendly soil but lots of pests:(

How do you combat carrot fly in poland?

Go ahead and talk to your buddy Mr. woodchuck up there, cause he thinks Europians don't care about it.

What I said was "ethnicity is not as important to Europeans as it is to Americans"

Now what you said was either extremely stupid or a stupid lie.

It’s not my concern that you don’t seem to care what you post, nor is it my concern that you are incapable of carrying a thought from one moment to the next, I just find it strange, after all there are no other thoughts to get in its way.

Havok
Where did I say Americans were racist?

Are you just looking for a fight because you misunderstood a word?

John Wayne said he disliked hyphenated Americans......Now go argue with The Duke.

One of the first times I had to do it was actually kinda hilarious, though what I did was done in good faith. I went to a DMV office in NYC to register a car. The form asked "Are you a visible minority". I'm Polish, therefore I am a minority so I checked the box. The nice lady (of African descend) looked at me angrily and told me I was not a visible minority.

Official forms here (Ireland) ask for you ethnicity, one option is Irish, not surprisingly no one ticks that box.

Edit

so why don't you like unite for real over there and pick a language and create true states instead of those individual countries?

Europeans like, like the individual country thing…for real.

Don’t confuse nationality with ethnicity.

You're so plastic that it's not even funny.

I'm all wood:)

You're just trying to be another arrogant smara** trying to teach us English.

Now you are totally missing the point.

The thread is about stereotypes and I suggest that in the US ethnicity is king. Several posters mentioned the same thing. In the course of the thread it has become apparent that ethnicity is not as important to Europeans as it is to Americans. It’s a good idea to read all of the thread and not just the last post.

There is no need to get defensive about one commonly used word.

OK, let me put it a different way.

Do you want to edit that.Meaning the quoted comment was stupid.

This was something I noticed a lot in the states, the inability of your average punter to discriminate.Meaning the inability of the average person in the US to distinguish (in this case) between Spanish speakers.

To Discriminate.

v.intr.

To make sensible decisions*; judge wisely.

* My emphasis.

How do you know they were actually Polish?

Because they said they were Polish and told their families that they were Polish.

the Lithuanian elite spoke Polish.

So you see how an absolutist view of history obscures things.

Actually, what annoys me most is the way that they have such a poor grasp of history - they seem to believe that Poland always existed and that there's no way that Busha and Jaja could be from Russia - even when they were born in Russia.

Its simple Poland was a multi ethnic place. Being occupied didnt make them less Polish. Perhaps they haven't taken an absolutist view of history.

Actually, one thing that they often do (from what I can see) is ignore the bits of history that doesn't agree with what they want to hear.

Everyone does that as illustrated by your factually incorrect example.

Of course, but in their case, they have no real reason to.

Everyone creates a national narrative.

Life / The Polish Dream - move out from Poland as fast as possible [73]

What good does it do to have half a million psychologists graduating every year?

You can’t let the market dictate otherwise we would have three million business graduates.

subsidize for top 1 or 2% academically top students

That happens in the west; post graduate students (the top students) get grants or are sponsored by business. Is there not something similar in Poland?

Education is not the same as TV where the more you pay the more you get. Sure there is the basic package but we all want more:)

Free movement of people is an important tenet of democracy. As Wroclaw said you would have to make them pay first; an exit tax wont work, is immoral and I suspect illegal.

Edit

They do it to Doctors in PL, they have to work x amount of hours at state hospitals.

I think something similar happens in Britain (Its free on the job training for the private sector). Doctors can also work in private practice throughout their careers, a kind of double jobbing forbidden to other occupations.
