Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

and what is your point. It is a word to describe a person from India--but it is a religious reference and not all Indians are Hindus. I am sure if you called an Indian muslim a hinduski--they would probably find it offensive.

Poles need to accept that their language is not exactly culture friendly when describing those from a foreign region.

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

pip: ok, but not all blacks come from north Africa.
OK not all Indians are from India.

so what is your point. It refers to a culture not the colour of skin and in Polish it is Hinduski--which is also inaccurate because of the billion people in India, not all of them are Hindu.

Study / Studying in Poland without speaking Polish? [15]

he will be able to get around quite well. And living here for a short time will let him pick up useful words. There are loads of people from the Netherlands here.

News / Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash [859]

I have just discovered that we have friends who lost their father in Smolensk. It is actually my daughter's close friends grandfather. We have done a few things together socially but since our kids have switched schools we really only see each other in the summer.

We had no idea.
He is now in the media asking people to stop publishing the photos. He had to identify his fathers body- he doesn't need to see it again and again.

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

Haven't you just contradicted yourself there a little bit?

no I haven't because not all blacks come from the same location. I have a Jamaican friend in Canada- when the whole "african american' thing came about we were chatting. I asked her point blank- do you want to be called african american or african canadian--she said no. She is Jamaican. Black will do.

Language / Busha and JaJa [140]

surely any Pole who immigrated would know that jaja is not a term of endearment??

I just asked my husband about the Busia thing. He has never heard it in Canada, or at least the city we are from and he was pretty active in the Polish community there.

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

it is offensive. and it is always said in an offensive manner by uneducated idiots. it is a name- used to describe a black person much like any offensive east indian, asian or other gypsy words. It is a word used to describe the colour of skin.

There is nothing wrong with saying "black".

so what if the word comes from spain. it is still offensive. and it is always said when describing a black person in a negative light. Much like Polak is used when describing stupid Polish people who live abroad.

and it is stuff like this that will always keep Poland as Europe B. Thinking this word is ok is wrong.

Language / Busha and JaJa [140]

actually, a lot of Poles came during the mass exodus and settled in the prairies. There was nothing in the prairies at that time so they assimilated rather well- started farming etc, the land was cheap at this time--as there was nothing there. There are festivals that celebrate the Polish, German and Ukrainian settlers of this period-as they all managed to get along in Canada.

what is interesting is that this "busia" hasn't made its way into Canada.

Language / Busha and JaJa [140]

so then shall we put this to sleep then. Not a Polish word. It is an Americanized word of Polish origin- it has been modified much like the Polish language of those living abroad.

So are we done?

Fact is Busha is only used in the U.S. And nobody corrects the mistake because it is the Americanization of the language. And as long as it stays in the U.S.--who cares?

Work / How much to pay a housekeeper in Warsaw? [23]

I am not embarrassed. Mine is Ukrainian and she is paying her way through school. I want to help her. We pay her well but she also does the work- I am not giving her money- she is working for it. There is the lesson. And when you are poorly education you don't have a lot of options- there is nothing wrong with having a cleaning lady.

3 dollars an hour??? that is disgusting and you should be embarrassed.

Work / How much to pay a housekeeper in Warsaw? [23]

I pay mine 150 from 8 til 2. --three hours less. 200 pln is pretty great for 8 hours of work. I would up it to 200 pln- that is a good amount for one day.

Language / Burak or redneck? [36]

different cultures--it is not an interchangeable word. Same with "white trash" equivalent "patologia" (hope i spelled that correctly). Not the same thing based on geography and culture.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

Oh, I see.

oh please. I am not a capitalist pig- no matter how some idiots try and portray me as such. There is nothing wrong with working hard and being successful.

But it seemed as though the point was missed. My husband deals with foreign companies every day.--they are still investing in everything. buying buildings- warsaw trade tower is up for sale- currently owned by a pension fund- they will sell it to something similar and make money from it. that is what happens in big business.

he leases space- he leases to primarily foreign companies that are still investing here. To foreigners- Poland is still the best option because of the skilled workers and cheap labour.

Apartments, even though they have slowed in construction, are still being built and sold- anybody that says otherwise is smoking crack.

go for a walk in downtown Warsaw--the core is still underdeveloped. I have posted and so have others, posted documents to support this- for a city the size of warsaw it has a massively underdeveloped office market- therefore, developers are still developing.

Skanska is widely successful- their current developments are all being built "green"--which attracts a certain client.

so if all these foreign companies are still investing in Poland then they hire locally. Even with a starting salary of 3,800pln per month it is still a good income from somebody just out of school.

So has the economy slowed--probably- but people are still being hired and people are still buying.

and perhaps those that thing I am a Capitalist pig should probably get their hands out of their pants and off their keyboards and strive for better. There is nothing wrong with being successful. And in case you didn't notice---Poles WANT to be successful and be proud. stop dragging the country down with neo communist bullshiit.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

pip: It hasn't affected us at all. In fact my business is doing exceptionally well and my husband is having his best year yet.

That`s good. Hopefully, it will always be like that.

sorry- I should clarify, I sound quite obnoxious. My husband works in commercial real estate--foreign investors are still investing and taking space here in droves.

Personally, I think the wages need to be higher- but having said that- I put my money where my mouth is. I have a student that works for me and I pay him 3 pln more than the average wage per hour part time. I think it is 7 pln per hour and I pay 10.

The need to fix the tax system here. Mostly property taxes and school taxes and things like that. I don't think income tax is too outrageous--but our property taxes are so low it is stupid. I will happily pay more property taxes if our roads and infrastructure are repaired.

If there is a slowdown- I don't see it.

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [656]

darling, when was the last time you were in Poland? Poles, particularly those that are poor that can only afford crap food and those that are wealthy that eat too much food- fat fat fat..

Poles have become fat at an alarming rate.

And it is a big vodka, potato, coke gut.

Life / Buying groceries in poland. Poles don't buy name-brand foods? [35]

"heinz" ketchup
Hostess chips---(maybe that one is just in Canada)
Folgers
Maxwell house.

dude- do yourself a favour and buy food that doesn't have a name brand. For example: a tomato, a chicken breast, celery, potatoes, carrots, apples, oranges.....you will do your body a favour instead of eating overly processed, chemically altered, food additive shiit that comes in a box.

Work / Working in Poland without speaking Polish [75]

of course it can be done- you just need to know how to look. I would suggest searching for Italian companies that have locations in Poland and apply from Italy with the hopes of moving to Poland.

Food / What's more popular in Poland beer or vodka? [55]

exactly. non pasteurized is the way to go. micro breweries are popping up everywhere- and it is a good thing too because all the massive beer corporations, ex: Carlesberg have taken over Polish beer.

I have a good Canadian joke for you:

How is drinking an American beer similar to sitting in a canoe?

It is too fecking close to water.

here is the thing. I live in Poland- I am not drinking a mass produced Mexican beer that has the taste of water. If I was in Mexico- hell yes I would drink this beer, but not the ones created for export. Polish micro breweries have wonderful beer and so do Czech and Slovakia. While I live here I will drink the beer that is produced here.

Beer with lime. Disgusting. Unless you are drinking a cold cerveza at a beach bar with a slice of lime in it, nothing will taste similar.

Travel / What is the ugliest city or town in Poland? [89]

radom is a hole
czestochowa is worse.
Malbork is not as bad.
I think perhaps Grudziac and Brodnica deserve honorable mentions- they do have some nice features, however.
Rypien - ick
Reda.....such potential but really a hole.

there are loads of holes in Canada. Just newer.
