Life / Why Polish people should be proud of being Polish? [370]

What about not being proud as such, and just being neutral about it?

Humbly recognising that there are both good and bad things about Poland (like everywhere) is much more likely to garner praise from outside of Poland - I'm being serious by the way. Patriotism and "bigging up" is never attractive and is more likely to draw criticism even if it's unwarranted. Just a suggestion...

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

mostly people say I look Irish..

Meh. I'm very sceptical about this kind of thing. You are a bit anyway aren't you? Irish I mean.

I wonder, do people say this after the fact "well, to be honest, I was actually thinking that you might be Irish etc etc"

I've been told this - when they know that is.

Before that I've been told German (mostly) French (sometimes) Russian (occasionally)...

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

What a rotten thing to say

Ah come on - in a thread as shallow as this where pics of strangers are posted purely to judge?

If I disagree with the "beauty" proposal it's a fairly succinct way of stating why.

Not that I was asked of course.

By the way, you're kind of sexy yourself Amathyst ; )

Travel / What can Poland do to attract more tourists? Llamas farm? [71]

What can Poland do?

1)Smile more, stare less.

2)Understand the concept of customer service.

3)Better restaurants.

Those things alone will make a huge difference. Probably sounds shallow but the average tourist wants the above no matter where they are. To attract tourists they need first and foremost to be ready for them, to understand the concept properly, to accept them (albeit grudgingly, as long as it is not displayed) as income and potentially, a big chunk of it.

Believe me, everything else will fall into place once the above is addressed because Poland has plenty to offer otherwise.

Don't mean to be churlish or whatever but IMO those are not "beautiful" women PennBoy.

They are glamourous, well presented etc but strip away the make up and the styling and you basically have ordinary-ish, but above average women.

The one on the left is too sexless to be properly attractive. The one on the right is kind of striking in a way but to me, looks more like a Latin American prostitute than anything else.

Beauty

Attractiveness

Sexiness

...they are all different as far as I'm concerned and you can have one or more without the others : )

Love / English Men vs Polish Men [207]

That really depends on the person

I'm sure it does but I have to be honest - I have yet to meet a Polish guy who gets involved with household stuff in anything more than a very peripheral way. And I'm not talking "disadvantaged" here, I'm talking educated professionals.

Life / Poles speaking English - examples [245]

Er guys I think you're getting this wrong.

I'm not speaking for Fuzzy but surely he meant "excluding Sikorski, before you mention him as everyone knows and agrees his English is very good, it's a given"

That's how I read it.

Life / What is Poland's fastest growing ethnic group? [57]

LOL - I can just see a documentary, people being interviewd, faces in darkness and voices obscured:

"Yeah well we do face a lot of discrimination. I'm thinking of emigrating to be honest. The states seems to be much more tolerant. There is too much discrimination here - people do not respect our lifestyle cultural choices."

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

The exact definition of etiquette is the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group. Manners are either a person's outward bearing or way of behaving toward others,

Assuming your "exact definition" is 100% correct and beyond debate then I don't see how what you say really contradicts what I posted.

Note "customary" !

Life / The nature of Polish jokes? [125]

Ah it's fine Seanus. It's too difficult without examples, you're right.

If I think of any I'll post them.

Still, I think the forum and life will still go on without this pet connundrum of mine being solved!

Life / The nature of Polish jokes? [125]

ANNNYYYHOOO...

Really, what I was originally getting at was the structure/type of joke in Poland.

Sense of humour is a different thing - I happen to think that certainly among the Poles I've met anyway, our sense of humour is similar. Similar in terms of situations or things that we find funny, the surrealism that exists in everyday life, the ironies, human quirks and personality types - all that stuff. I can say things or make observations that I don't need to explain the humour of, and vice versa.

It's just when it comes to actual jokes, that tumbleweeds start to roll by. It's wierd.

Like I said, it's almost as if sometimes the purpose of jokes in Poland is to be clever or in some way satirical and actually being funny is secondary. It's the other way round for me.

Maybe it's just me or maybe things are lost in translation a little - but I don't think so most of the time.

Life / The nature of Polish jokes? [125]

I simply cannot believe the arrogance and blinkered insanity of this polmed person

Polmed:

You are racist

Polmed:

tittle hater

This was before I "called" her anything, and after an anti-semitic outburst.

What's more she wilfully chose to completely misconstrue comments I had made - and tried to represent the opposite.

She is one of these strange people who think that they can say whatever they like and are immune from any criticism. She also seems to think that she is automatically deserving of respect somehow.

Only Polmed herself Seanus - her "opinons" and hypocrisy.

Not to mention her selective interpretations of other threads.

Pretty difficult to take you seriously Polmed.

That wasn't a joke either by the way.

This by the way is the same lady who

has someone tried and convicted as being a rapist already (it's "obvious" you know)

thinks Germans are dehumanised fascist robots

thinks anyone who disagrees that Poland is the best country in the universe must therefore hate Poland

etc etc

Life / Rate Poland (Life Quality / Culture and People / Food): 1-10! [232]

no problems and they don't even speak english. in and out. fingerprinting takes a few seconds on an electronic device.

I don't doubt that it's a speedy and relatively hassle free process - it is not the point though. It's invasive and I refuse to be treated like a criminal.

you're blowing it totally out of proportion which is why I am sure you have other reasons for not wanting to come

I. DON'T.

What's wrong with you? I have nothing against the US & I don't know why you are assuming I have ?!

I have enjoyed my trips there and there are still places I would have liked to have seen & experienced. I won't lose sleep over it though as there are plenty of other interesting destinations on the planet too.

hardly a reason to boycott a country

Well for me and many others - it is. Maybe you should in fact "get over" this simple fact : )

trust me, you along with the others you speak of boycott trips to the USA for other reasons.

Eh no we don't Fuzzy.

Who is paranoid now? I happened to like going to the states but I won't be subjected to fingerprinting, retina scans etc.

Simple as.

probably all this security issues at US airports don't help tourism

From my own experience, I'm sure there is an impact. Since the post 9/11 security measures I haven't returned to the states and will not do so. Many people I know have taken the same position.

I saw that in Poland too.

Well I've seen it in Ireland too as it happens! It was just a singular, random example. The countryside in Provence is full of lavender. The sheer regional variety in French landcape is amazing - it really is like lots of little countries within one sometimes.

Paris seems to be dull and overhyped.

Overhyped, probably - but only because of the enormous name & reputation it has to live up to. Doomed to falling short in some ways really.

But dull, no way - and grey buildings??

I don't know where you get that from. To be honest, and no offence, but when anyone says grey buildings, after Russia, Poland would be the first place that most people would think of!

I have been to France a number of times (including Paris) and really it is delusion and fantasy to think that Poland can compare or even come close. Poland is not without charm and beauty but I think you would be very lucky to find any non-Poles who think it is a more beautiful country than France. It's even a bit sad and laughable to hear the suggestion really.

Maybe it's because saying I was in Norway doesn't sound as good as saying I spend my holydays in France?

More likely because Norway is more expensive.

One problem in Poland is a total lack of coordinated effort to advertise the place.

Seems to be very true.

Amazing that more effort isn't put into this - potentially large income for relatively little investment.
