History / What proportion of the Polish population collaborated with the Nazis? [125]

3.1415927%, I think.

Isn't that pi to 7 decimal places percent?

I don't think many true poles would have volunteered for the Nazis. They had fought for Poland for the last 140 years during Prussian, Russian and Austrian partition.

Having seen Camp 1 in Oświciem and all the Nazi documents on wiping out the Polish nation, I don't think true poles would help with this.

But!!!

Unless you were alive during the war living in Poland you can't judge anybody for colaborating, you don't know the individual circumstances.

UK, Ireland / Why are Polish people, especially women, so disrespectful toward the English? [437]

Because the as you call "scum" are citizens and it's not easy for them to compete with immigrants undercutting wages. It's simple it's not rocket science.

You got the whole situation upside down.

The jobs were vacant because the British would not do the jobs, because as you said its better to sit on the dole and be given money than have to work for it.

The Immigrants took the jobs for the money offered to them, the same as what the British were offered but decided to sit at home taking the dole instead.

But now, there is a financial crisis, benefits will be cut and there are now jobs for you now becasue they are filled by immigrants who would rather work for the same money as the dole.

No Sympathy for anyone who thinks its better to get money for free rather than working.

UK, Ireland / Warning to British people visiting Poland!! Don't get drunk and smash the place up! [447]

English on Stag do's abroad are not good examples of the vast majority of English people abroad. They are there to get very drunk because its cheap.

The locals in Krakow should just charge extra for beer when its a group of Drunk English men, ban them from every decent club and the Police should arrest them for being drunk on the street.

This will stop them coming to Krakow and they will go to a different country. Why do you think they moved to Krakow from Prague?

I don't want to be banned from places in Poland because I'm English. I can hold my drink and be polite even when drunk. I'm a Happy drunk.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [417]

I was just saying being a good soldier is a Polish trait.

They are not better than other countries soldiers but they are just as good.

The British Army has the best soldiers in the world but without political backing they are useless. You can still have great soldiers but be a rubbish Army.

History / Yalta Conference and Poland [78]

The Red Army was on a role and at the height of their powers, I don't think the west had a chance and it was good the Red Army stopped on the Elbe river.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [417]

The Polish were known through history as good soldiers. The British Hussar (Queens royal Hussars, Kings Royal Hussars) descend from the Polish Cavalry and there are many links with the Polish Eagle. In Medievil times the Polish had a great Army.

In WW2 the Polish held out for 36 days under an attack from the Nazi's and the soviets.

The French (aided by the BEF) lasted 47 days under an attack from the Nazi's.

Recently the Polish were in Iraq and now are in Afganistan and doing a good job.

I think you can use being a good soldier as a Polish trait if being a good soldier is a British trait.

History / Yalta Conference and Poland [78]

How about General Patton's plan, which was to keeping pushing with the Allied armies and drive the Reds out of Europe altogether?

And how were the Allies supposed to do this? The Italian Campaign and D Day were just bit parts in WW2. The West just kept the Nazi's busy while Stalin smashed them. There was no way we would have beaten the Red Army.

Even in the 80's NATO would have been smashed.

Hindsight is great.

The Brits and Americans should have trusted Stalin and made a pact before Stalin made the pact with Hitler. In Hindsight, when we hesitated we sealed Poland's fate. It was not foreseen at the time.

By Yalta the Red Army was too powerful and able to dictate what would happen. The UK were Americas Lap Dogs by 1945 and nothing has changed since.

4.They feed you well.
Again the old generation will but the current one doesn't know how to cook generally

5.Polish women are generous.
Again no more or less than anywhere else

6.They don't spend money crazy.
Nonsense. If they have money to spend they will buy clothes and shoes from Zara or whatever boutique is "cool" at the time

I must be very lucky then. My gf feeds me well, she is the most generous person I have ever met and she wont spend money on clothes even when she has money. She will only buy something if she needs it, won't even let me buy her clothes.

Life / 3 reasons why winter is the best time of the year in Poland [58]

Warsaw and public transport was not mentioned, a slight reference to the metro was.

Poles in public places was stated.

My friends are in Lodz, I have one friend in Warsaw who covers her mouth on the metro if she sneezes.

And for some reason Poles do not cover themselves when sneezing and coughing in public.

Rubbish, all my Polish friends cover their mouths when the sneeze.

Being cold is better than being hot but I don't think Poland temperatures are "Comfortable" in the winter.

Travel / Driving from Gdansk to Katowice [13]

I drove Lodz to Katowice on the A1 yesterday. Through Lodz is quite busy during rush hours but from Lodz to Katowice it was 2 lanes each way for the whole trip. Not Motorway but it was better than most of the single lane roads.

Between Gdansk and Lodz I cant say. I think it snowed a lot in Lodz yesterday after we left. I got to Zakopane from Lodz in 5 hours even in freezing temperatures.

God, how sad it is to hear that....I really, really like British literature, culture, music, architecture.

Just because the post is written in good English it does not mean they are English or British.
You need to read the whole post first before replying.

Just because you're coming to visit from America,

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

1) Poles are FAKE to foreigners. They are only nice and hospitable because they want to profit from you, they are not genuinely kind. And plus, they treat foreigners better than their own because if you're from another country, then you must be "better." Foreigner to them equals dollars or euros.

Not my experience.

3) Thievery and the rudeness! Go to the supermarket and you'll find old women pushing their carts behind you for no reason.

I have never had a polish person be rude to me and I have been visiting often for 4 years.

What I hate about Poland is -

1) How hard the language is to speak.

2) How hard it is to understand polish people when they speak.

3) How far away Poland is from where I work.

I like it when Brits are criticizing Poles

It was an American who posted

UK, Ireland / Warning to British people visiting Poland!! Don't get drunk and smash the place up! [447]

When I was in Krakow the guy who owned the hostel told us that he hates having English people there

I have heard these stories and it always seems to be Krakow. Krakow is seen as a stag party city thats cheaper than Prague. I am glad that these English people are not wanted and are banned.

Lets hope they stop going to Krakow and don't just move to the rest of Poland for stag parties.

I have only been drunk once in Poland, and that was at a friends BBQ in his garden. Homemade Vodka was lethal :)

Don't be a lout in Poland and you will have a great holiday in Poland.

Where on earth are you living that has such a lousy system? It's not the Poland I know - apart from Lodz!

I have no problem with Public transport in Lodz, they have refurbished most of the tram lines now.

I'd rather travel on Lodz public transport than any UK public transport.

Pizza should have TOMATO SAUCE, not ketchup. mozzarella cheese, not the rubbery crap trying to imitate mozzarella cheese. and please, please, hold the corn.

Have you been to Italy? Italian food in any country is not as good as in Italy itself.

I've been to a few foreign restaurants in Lodz, Lublin and Warsaw and most were great tasting food. The Spanish restaurant in Lodz was poor but that is the only one.

Coke tastes different in Poland and Germany to the UK. Chocolate in UK tastes different to Poland and Germany. Its down to local tastes.

Have you been to the UK? The weather there is 12 months of gray, cold, wind and wet.

Life / Wszystkich Świętych (All Saints Day) // Dzien Zaduszny (All Souls day) [93]

I was in a Polish village near Lodz with my girlfriend on All saints day. I went to the Mass with my gf and her mum, we stood by her Grandpa's grave. It looked very nice at night too.

The way Polish cemeteries are looked after makes me ashamed of the cemeteries in the UK. Most people do not put fresh flowers on the graves in the UK.

Next time I am in the UK I will visit my relatives graves and tidy them up and put fresh flowers down.

This is a very good tradition in my opinion.

Love / Age difference, my Polish girl is 23 and I am 39 [42]

Im 35 in February and my Polish gf is 22 in 3 weeks. She likes me because I act like I'm her age most of the time but I act my own age when I need to be sensible.

I know what I want from life now, its to spend all my time with her.

Its not because im a rich foreigner either, her Mum gets angry if I try to spend my money. She goes out shopping and stocks the fridge before I arrive!!

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

Ive been to 35 countries in the world, most of Europe. The friendliest and most helpful people I have met are Polish. I fell in love with Poland and my Polish gf. The food, the people, the music, the countryside, the mountains, the forests, the weather.

I work in Germany but 3 weekends a month I drive a 1600km round trip to £ódź to stay with moja dziewczyna :)
