Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

if a country is 100% white, there would be no violent crime?? Now that's nonsense.

A quick look at Appalachia or the Ozarks should dispell that very silly idea, not to mention that in the heydey of the mafias the three big groups were all white (italian, irish and jewish)

a sizeable proportion of American Evangelical and Fundamentalist Christians

define 'sizeable' and they don't actually maintain much in the way of violent social practices toward women (unless you think having to wear a lot of flower print dresses, keep your hair starched to a milimeter of its life and always smiling is violence...)

our own natives would fill any gaps left for violence

In the British Isles yeah, Americans have silly fantasies about it being extremely orderly and genteel when in actuality it's always been one of the most violent places in Europe...

Have you ever see a table knife

Yes, and since dysfunctional English youth are not carving each other up with them they are pretttty irrelevant to the discussion at hand which is the British nanny state treating the symptoms (dysfunctional youth stabbing each other) and not the disease (neoliberalism induced dispossession and alienation).

apart from a few religious nutters.

..and the sex grooming gangs....

it was done 400 years ago to stop people stabbing each other.

So.... the modern UK is 400 years behind the times? Hooo.... that explainst a _lot_!

About fifteen years ago, that was looked at but not literally removing them, rather redesigning them

Wouldn't it be better to address the underlying crazy rather than make piecemeal attacks against the symptoms?

there would still be no reason to carry a knife

A friend or relative calls up and wants to borrow a knife, they live about 500 meters away, too short to drive, but can you legally carry it?

What about scissors, won't outlawing knives just mean that the victims of US societal dysfunction will start using scissors?

The deep pathology in the UK needs to be addressed and enacting one irrational restriction after another is not going to do that...

History / What should Russia and Poland do to become if not friends, then at least not enemies? [945]

The correct saying is 'and if only me auntie had boll*cks, she'd be me uncle'.

The standard Polish version is (correct me if I'm wrong, someone) Gdyby ciocia miała wąsy byłaby wujaszkiem...(if my aunt had whiskers she'd be my uncle)

I've also heard (quote approximate) "Gdyby ciocia miała koła byłaby bimbą" (if my aunt had wheels she'd be a streetcar)

back on topic please

Not sure I agree that they don't have any life chances - they get

Those chances don't live forever... it takes years of solid effort to develop the social and educational capital necessary to find and keep a job and stay out of trouble with the law etc, it's not something that they can decide to do quickly once they're past the age of 10 or so, it's a little like languages and the critical acquisition period...

My guess is that the youth busy stabbing each other to death come from cultures where education is not much valued and that idolize petty thugs over small businessemen

live in one of the richest cities in the world

which is no fun if you're not among the richest part of the population...

it's low unemployment at the moment and has been for quite a long time

but they have to compete with short term migrants from places like Poland who are willing to work for less (since they don't live there and will accept living conditions that natives rarely find attractive) the modern pattern of large west european metropolises is very stratified with low income natives at the bottom

arm gang members with guns so they shoot each other instead of knives

To be perfectly frank, if their aim is good enough I don't care about gang members shooting each other, I only care when they hit civilians instead (unfortunately as most of them are blithering idiots wtih no areas of life competence that happens a lot).

My main remains, it's not the existence of weapons or efficacy of laws, it's the public.

Too large a percentage of the public in London has no realistic hope for any kind of decent life (party government policy, party their parents' and their choices).

Fix that and you'll fix the knife crime problem. Don't fix it and you won't....

It's not that hard...

News / Roma community feels discriminated in Poland [43]

Maybe perhaps their origin is Birobidjan

They come from the Indian subcontinent (the language is related to languages of northern India). One theory is that they were camp followers who followed an army outside the continent were sold into slavery en masse and once they escaped kept going west rather than back east.

they would have taken over banking, media

A completely roma/gypsy society is more or less impossible because there are too many jobs they won't/can't do (for reasons of ritual purity and the like) so they need a host culture to survive and flounder on their own, the worst roma/gyspy poverty is where they are most on their own.

still feel discriminated

the correct term is 'discriminated against' (or 'suffer discrimination'), sorry to be pedantic but it's one of my pet peeves...

Anyhoo, there is zero incentive for anyone to write that Roma/Gypsies don't feel discriminated against and maintaining a seperate existence is one of the main goals of Roma/Gypsy peoples so it's kind of a non-story, especially since the Roma/Gypsy population in Poland is so small compared to other countries in the area.

And as long as Roma/Gypsies eschew education nothing good will change for them.

Knife crime spans all ethnic groups as do the victims.

Well unless we see information on the perpetrators it's hard to say that for sure.

And even if the perpetrators span all ethnic groups chances are that it's not normal proportional representation but a couple of groups are wildly over-represented.

What's important are the percentages which is just the information that the governmnet wants to conceal..

one of the more recent attacks the attacker shouted 'death to Muslims'

Well maybe that will inspire the unimpressive london mayor to do something beyond uttering fatuous blather.

why do you even start with me?

Because I wasn't sure you were that deluded. Now that I am, there's no possible dialogue between us.

Go to church and pray to the god that kills between 10 and 20 per cent of all babies before they're even born... next to which abortion statistics are pretty mild.

Then what the hell is wrong with people in London that so many want to carve each other up like Thanksgiving turkeys?

It's not about the weapons, but about the societal rot... addressing that is much more effective than restictive laws...

Most knives are already banned in the U.K. with stiff penalties, including prison, for carrying an offensive weapon.

So if you buy a knife in a store.... how do you get it home?

Do you disagree with me on the issue of unborn children?

define children.... my own opinion is that the natural point of law should be based around the idea of natural viability (ability of the fetus to survive outside the womb).

For the sake of argument, abortion in the first four months should be freely available
In the fifth and sixth months (around viability time) there should be restrictions related to the health of the mother
7-9 months even more restrictions

I'm willing to discuss questions of timing and circumstance, I'm not willing to discuss with people who see no moral difference between a two week old fetus and a newborn baby...

the Afro-Caribbean community would be the one most associated with guns and crime out of the three

Is African-Carribean immigration to the UK continuing? If so, why? Comaprative rates of violent offenses seem like a very good factor to take into consideration when thinking of immigration policy...

. I don't know the exact stats for gun crime committed by black people in the UK or America

The per capita homocide rate among African Americans goes between 3 and 5 times the white rate depending on when you measure (there were peaks around 1980 and the early 90s) .

most Polish women who marry a black guy won't be choosing a gun toting gang member. If he's American, the Walmart manager is nearer the mark.

Yes, historically most Polish-black relationships (not that many end up in marriage since black men independent of national origin tend to avoid marriage or raising children) are wtih those that came to Poland to study...

It is though a known fact that Poland was a country with strong anti-Jewish leanings

Even if people were to accept that (for the sake of argument) having strong anti-Jewish leanings is not a crime and in no way shape or form supports your implied claim that Poles share collective guilt with nazi germany in carrying out the holocaust.

don't condescend to me.

killing babies is bad, really bad

So remind us what punishments you want to inflict on women who have abortions?

An American conservative recently suggested treating it as murder worthy of capital punishment (he suggested hanging women who have abortions).

Are you in agreement? Think that's a little too harsh?

Czechs or Slovaks. Why are they hardly ever mentioned here?

there used to be a regular poster who was (IIRC) half-Polish half-Czech (lived in the countries not the US or UK) but I think she disappeared a long time ago...

She seemed offended when I (humorously, I thought) referred to the Czech republic as Pepikstan.... (some people... nooooooo sense of humor.....)

your claim that Poland and the Church approved of killing Jews?

You clearly think you can reason with him on this issue. Disengage, he will never see Poland as anything but as a co-architect (or at least sub-contractor) of the holocaust. He's prepared to be magnanimous once Poland admits this but he'll never think anything else and no evidence can/will convince him.

Disengage, it's not worth it, he's approaching crow levels of insanity....

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

do they let these people in in the first place

it's impossible (for the time being) to stop gangs from coming to Poland, after brexit? but cultural and language barriers are enough of a deterrent

there are a bunch of different questions that people on both sides try to slough off with cheap empty slogans

security vs freedom (all else being equal people with legal guns are more likely to use them than people without)

the big problem in the us isn't guns per se, but widespread mental illness caused by 37 years of neoliberal policies that ultimately atomize individuals into mutually antagonistic competitors in the race to consume (crazy people with guns are more dangerous than non-crazy people with guns)

different rates of various types of crime by racial, ethnic or religious groups is another inconvenient fact that people try to wish away or ignore away....

should Poland take this into account when structuring its migrant policies

Every country should take this into account.

or is it too politically incorrect to even discuss this type of trend these days.

the entire point of political correctness is to make people stupid and keep them that way, if you don't keep track of racial, ethnic and religious background of social indicators like crime, economic and academic achievement then you're making policy in a state of ignorance.

pretty it up however you want, but it's ignorance. I don't like ignorance.

Dare I address the elephant in the room, but gun crime in London is confined to one or two ethnic groups

Caribbean? or South of the Sahara? Everybody is supposed to be very, very polite and not notice differing crime rates across different groups.
