History / Why do Polish people hate to be called Eastern European? [120]

However it lacks the famous Western European invention -

It also lacks ideas like "rule of law" and "property rights" which tend to mean that wealth is concentrated at the top while much of the population still don't have flush toilets...

Life / Are Poles mentally more Eastern European or Western European? [170]

I would say rather that Poland is at the crossroads between Western, Central and Eastern Europe

western - cultural aspirations, prussian heritage in western poland, bordering Germany

central - (traditionally austria, hungary, czech and slovakia) but parts of southern Poland were in the Austro-Hungarian empire which shows in places like Kraków

eastern - (orthodox lands to to the east) mainly reflected in things like fatalism and materialism (

For complex cultural, geographic and historical reasons individual places and persons in Poland are liable to display western, central and eastern characteristics all at the same time.

History / Why do Polish people hate to be called Eastern European? [120]

Geographically it's one land mass and Europe is a sub-continent (like the Indian sub-continent), it's just that people think of Europe as a continent because of its disproportionate cultural and intellectual and technical influence.

In terms of intellectual and technical achievements Europe has produced more than the rest of Eurasia combined...

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

how this EU wants to control everything......it is anti freedom

It's a better sign that the Franco-German alliance has the interests and desires of EU citizens.... somewhere (as they saying goes).

Article 13 has already generated a huge amount of citizen pushback and the largest petition in EU history... and the bloodsuckers at the top refuse to let it die and insist on reviving it in an even more monstrous form.

It's this type of arrogance at the top that turns people against the EU (despite its many good features).

Bad news..... The hell-born Franco-German alliance has brought back article 13

boingboing.net/2019/02/05/death-sentence-for-the-web.html?_ga=2.59448941.1733604656.1549400138-1766019156.1549400136

This is bad beyond words...

ou should apologize for it.

News / Pawel Adamowicz, Gdansk mayor, dies after stabbing [354]

And the campaign which began online with the modest goal of collecting 1000 zl "Ostatnia puszka Pawła Adamowicza" (the last collection box of Paweł Adamowicz) now has collected over 15 million zloties.

Very good news for sick children as once more WOSP does more good than all of its critics put together!

Great news that should be celebrated!

Funny stuff so he wasnt so crazy after all

So this is who you are now? An admirer of a mentally ill common criminal who's probably the most hated person in the country? I know you have a death wish, but I didn't realize it was that bad.....

What is that online campaign about?

It was an online collection for WOSP originally between a circle of acquaintances that spread - now the total is almost 5 million

tvn24.pl/wiadomosci-z-kraju,3/ostatnia-puszka-prezydenta-adamowicza-zbiorka-na-facebooku,902389.html

Only after Poland lost it to Prussia during partition

The thing is I really don't care about anything that happened for 1800 (or better 1900) in terms of relevance for modern political issues. So... in recent history let's say.

Why is one man more important than the millions of Poles

Who is saying anything of the kind you silly, silly plastic...

The german past of Danzig is very much alive and kicking..

PiS and its supporters only care about the German past as a way of riling up supporters and keeping them angry and nervous - normal people don't care (beyond historical interest). As I said, they only bring up Germany in the Adamowicz case to play to their low-information base.

Wanna re-fight the war

No. I'm completely over WWII, let the dead past remain the dead past.

or concentrate on the topic

The topic is the mayor of Gdańsk, killed by a psychotic criminal and
-how his self-styled political enemies cannot let go of the hate -
-Polish reactions to the heinous crime (one online campaign hoping to raise 1000 has now raised four million which is very, very good except for a few numbskulls who can't let go of their hate

Overall though most Polish people have reacted in a very civic-minded way, concentrating on the good and working to shore up private citizen initiatives. The main enemies of this are pro-Russian who dislike the idea of civic mindedness.

The German past of Gdańsk is very much irrelevant - if his post-mortem enemies didn't have Germany to drag up they'd find something else, that's how they think

Genealogy / Perception of hair color in Poland [14]

Women look fine when they color their hair

You were obviously not in Poland in the early 90s when many young women completely devastated their hair with multiple dye jobs (so you have a pleasant looking young woman in her early 20s or so with frazzled out lifeless old-lady hair..... brrrrrr

Latest news on the killing of Adamowicz (since the mods closed that thread.....)

The organizer of security is now being held by police under charges of... wprowadzenie policji w błąd (misleading the police).

He apparently was not entirely honest when he said Stefan W had a press pass (many noticed there was no such 'plakietka' in the film footage from the incident).

Genealogy / Perception of hair color in Poland [14]

It has nothing to do with Polish DNA and everything to do with the fact that different languages (and cultural groups) categorize the 'same' or 'different' colors differently.

Most Poles are not really blondes, brunettes (by my US typology) are far more common. There are some traditional negative connotations for redheads (rudy/ruda) and also some toward blondes (more modern). Sometimes people with dark brown hair might have the nickname czarny/czarna (black).

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

What would make them want to leave?

Nothing in the immediate future.... but the bloom is off the rose for a bunch of reasons (Merkel didn't help, Brussels and Brexit isn't helping and real emotional enthusiasm for the EU, which existed for a time... is kind of not a thing now (again from the people I talk to which tend toward the highly educated).

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

Fun fact - About 33,33% of Poles would support Polexit

over 65 percent of all respondents in Poland oppose the idea of their country leaving the EU

My take. There are about four different camps regarding the EU (ime) with wild guesses about approximate percentages.

A Pro EU (have genuine enthusiasm and positive feelings about its current form) maybe 20 %

B For the EU (for now, but purely instrumentally and can imagine a time in the future when they wouldn't mind leaving) 35%

C Dead set against joining and dead set against remaining. about 20%

D Have little idea what the EU is and/or what Poland gets out of it and don't care.about 15 %

The critical group here is B, you won't change the minds of most people in A or C and D may or may not vote... The question is which way the B group will go in the future and what A and C can do to influence them...

słonina is rarely eaten in Poland (it's more of a Russian thing).

IME słonina is used more as a spice (sliced into cubes and added to some dishes) and not eaten on its own.

some crazy dude, badly mistreated by previous liberal government.he got crazy as a result

huh? So it was a politically motivated crime?

we all know about the level of corruption in the judiciary...

No we don't, please explain oh person who does not live here and consumes a restricted diet of propaganda

The are still largely indoctrinated in the old ways of the Soviet Union

Not especially, that's not even part of PiS propaganda as far as I know... (that was the excuse they used to gut the military, not the judiciary)

It's less than one year!

Do you have any idea how many times they pulled that "new evidence to be revealed soon" trick? I lost count but every couple of weeks at one point.

How much evidence was ever actually revealed? Zero, nic, nada, niente, nenio, rien....

If they had evidence they would reveal it instead of this 'soon to be revealed' nonsense....

Off the top of my head, no, but it's nothing unusual in local politics.

Two things
I think the idea of political parties still hasn't shed the communist taint which is why political parties tend to be so... transient and why so many mayors distance themselves from any national party.

Also language might play a role, the president of the country can't belong to a political party (weird idea) and since mayors are also called presidents (prezydent miasta) there might be some unconscious resistance to the idea of mayors being closely associated with parties.

it wasn't a political assassination.

Except that the mentally unstable con specifically mentioned Adamowicz's affiliation with a political party (one demonized by the government) as his motivation...

it emerged

more feeble excuses for blaming anyone but the murderer...
