Life / Jewish culture in today`s Poland [158]

volunteers helped restore 100 Jewish cemeteries

Exactly. There are still hundreds waiting for restoration.

- with very few Jews to care for it

Go to Germans and Polish communists and complain there are so few Jews in Poland today.

jews ever doing the same voluntary care of Christian cemeteries in Poland?

It isn`t necessary coz there are millions of Christians in Poland who can take care of their own cemeteries.

A better example would be to ask how Jews in Israel take care of Polish cemeteries there. What do you know about it???

Feedback / I love this forum - It's so Polish: tolerant, inconsistent, amusing [337]

problematic poster yourself

Of course I am. Am I pawian for nought??? :):):)

The difference is that I have been pawian from the very beginning to roughly deal with such problematic posters like you. While you adopted the nick Milosław which connotes love meanings in Polish but you proved one for the biggest abusers and aggressors in the forum. That is why, seeing that discrepancy, none of forum females would like to meet you in real life coz they fear you will abuse and insult them like you do others in the forum every day. . You are wasting time on them. Ha!!!!

(I changed pictures

Cooking pics? Good! :):):)

Yes..... and no.

Without the name of the film and basic knowledge of the plot it is impossible to guess that double context.

If not for my moratorium on using names in the forum,

I stopped calling people names to celebrate Easter in a better atmosphere. However, I am still sticking to the resolution. So, so far I haven`t used my typical m........, a.........., Russian a..... l....., dog insults, grandpa insults and other on you.

Amasing!!!!
PS. Of course, it doesn`t mean I have dropped my mocking irony which I use on certain problematic posters here. They constantly need education and I am ready to offer it to them coz I never give up even on hopeless cases. :):):)

you have made bigos!

Exactly!!! That is the old proverb of Polish bees! When a bee makes a mess instead of honey in the production halls of the hive, her critical mates mention bigos! :):):)

there are also dozens of festivals of Jewish culture in Poland.

Where living people enjoy Jewish culture.

Also, there are hundreds of Jewish cemeteries where dead people and their graves give a proof of the Jewish culture in past Poland.
The condition of the cemetaries varies - from ruined forlorn or even bulldozed to well-kept places.

I wouldn't have got that from Pawian's pic though.

Our activists over here would be trying to destroy them.

I had happened a few days before - eco maniacs poured red paint over the monument. That is why eco reasonables used water to make up for their mad colleagues` stupidity.

You are annoying.

His annoying is a piece of cake compared to my annoying. I am a master at it. :):):)

Anyone who wants to know facts should read my post.

There are no facts in your posts, only private opinions which are mostly not true :):):)

E.g,

All there is are some museums paid for by the Polish taxpayers

No, there are also dozens of festivals of Jewish culture in Poland. The most known is the one in Krakow`s Jewish district - Kazimierz but others are also important.

Food / Bigos Recipe [183]

I want to say bigos

Maf, say it! Don`t be shy!!!

I never cook bigos with a recipe. After so many years I learnt how to do it with my eye judgment only. ):::):). Besides, you can`t spoil the dish unless you add too much pepper.

I use both fresh cabbage and sauerkraut in equal proportions. Then I add pre-fried sausage and pork. And mushrooms. The best are noble ones but champignons will do as well. Spices are juniper, pepper both ground and whole, allspice, marjoram, bay leaves.

Aaaa!! One more thing! Tomato sauce! You need to add it for bigos to gain nice light brown colour. Forget ketchup this time!!!! Bigos as a cult dish requires original ingredients.

I made it yesterday and the consumption day is today! Even my second middle son was tempted. I made enough to go for a few days.

First photo clockwise: fried sausage/bacon/mushrooms, fresh cabbage, pre-fried pork, sauerkraut. Tomato piree in the middle.
Last photo - my first serving. I had two.

The police tend to be out and about every in Warsaw watching youngsters.

Now, instead of youngsters splashing each other and random adults, it is activists who splash monuments.

Yes, bigos!

but 'instead of makowiec'

Bigos, just like poppy seed cake, takes some time to prepare. I refuse to make both at a time and I chose bigos.

Hint: it isn`t tatar raw steak!

Another hint. it is one of the main dishes of traditional Great Polish Cuisine. But foreigners are not so enthusiastic.
Hint 3: It can be kept long and eaten day by day without the loss of taste, quite the contrary.

I walked downtown for about an hour and didn't see anybody (even kids) shooting water pistols

Yes, urban kids prefer to stay at home with their smartphones. In the countryside it isn`t better. Sad.

I've seen plenty of buckets of water chucked over the years

That seems to be the song of the past now. Partly due to cities closing down street water pumps. When I was a child, there were two public water pumps on the way to school. We drank from them on hot days.

What is the relationship between the man and the boy?

I remember this old film, older than me in fact. I watched it in 1979 and never again coz it is a sad depressing movie about an unhappy child. I hate such films.

Life / Polish film and serial riddles [137]

Jan Himilsbach plays the old porter in the film ' Pies'.

Wow! I didn`t know that film. Thank you for making me aware.

Let`s not prolong this riddle. There is another film, a drama, in which Himilsbach appears with a dog: We have to kill that love from 1974.

The best thing about the film is the narrative frame, the plot with Himilsbach and the dog. (...) Here, Himilsbach is the caretaker of a building materials warehouse. He made friends with a homeless dog, and since the dog barked in the evenings at the guys to whom his master illegally sold cement, the owner decided to get rid of it. Himilsbach's plot in the film is silent and looks like a parable or a fairy tale. At the same time, it has a lot of life.

The dog loves the owner who took him in and tamed him, the owner loves the dog for his affection, but he knows he has to get rid of him. The dog doesn't want to leave, and the owner, seeing no other option, decides to kill the animal with an explosive. But it runs after the owner and both die.

I watched the film once only and considered it very depressing coz most characters are cynical and corrupt.

Life / Jewish culture in today`s Poland [158]

How do you tell assimilated from unassimilated Jew?

Unassimilated Jews didn`t speak Polish and kept their traditions, especially religious ones. They didn`t have to change coz they lived and worked in Jewish districts with other Jews all their lives.

Assimilated Jews spoke Polish and dropped their Jewish religion. But rarely adopted catholicism - they remained non-believers.
Before the war, 80% Jewish children went to Polish state schools where they learned the language. It means 20% didn`t.

You would like it.

Yes, I know. But currently my schedule doesn`t allow for it.

Life / Jewish culture in today`s Poland [158]

Assimilated to what?

To Polish language and culture. Certain poets of Jewish origin assimilated so much their their poems or books written in Polish are taught at Polish schools.

There is no Jewish culture in Poland

The soul of the Jewish culture which Germans tried to destroy and communists tried to suppress is still present in Poland. Among others, thanks to such places like Polin Museum which keeps up the memory of Jewish citizens of Poland.
