Law / Moving back to Poland - Healthcare [112]

4th option - the English-speaking Channel islands

Not sure if you can just move there.... there are a lot of restrictions on residency....

For a party normally so disciplined

How's Jarek doing? I have the idea maybe they're not afraid of him anymore... which means the practical end as they're all far too venal and grasping to function without him keeping them a little in check.....

PiS walked straight into the trap

It makes them look like wimps... PiS voters don't mind the usual bezinteresowne chamstwo the party is renowned for (it probably helps them) but they can't stand weakness...

It would be a shame if more public gatherings by Duda are accompanied by loud protestors... I don't think Adrian's skin is nearly tough enough.

Though at this point I think I prefer the PSL candidate PiS has taken the countryside so maybe PSL can move into the yawning space for a sane Christian Democrat party (that PiS was advertising itself as back in 2015).

aka the ends justify the means.... aka prl, gratulacje towarzyszu witamy w partii!

are being remembered by their names and their current positions.

What about pan prezes? His supposed biography makes no sense whatsoever unless you posit that his familiy had a working relationship with relatively high ranking members of the communist party... (at which point it makes a lot of sense).

What about Piotrowicz? How have his 'crimes and treasons' been punished? Or do you believe his fairytale about secretly helping dissidents (roundly rejected by those who were there at the time)?

News / Modern F-35 bought by Poland. Good decision? [288]

That said, US has not won a war since the 1950th

It was successful against the mighty nation of Grenada in 1983.... and arguably against Panama in around 1990 but apart from that, just one big floparooni..

There isn't any special "German gene" or anything

Like I said it's party demographic (population size) and partly cultural factors (work ethic and technological savvy).

If you read your history books

If you read your books you'd know that it was the USSR that defeated Nazi Germany (all the other allies are maybe around 10%) the US major effort in WWII was in the Pacific.

America has the most powerful military on the planet

It hasn't won a war in how many decades? It can't even keep sand pits like Iraq or Afghanistan under control.... not so impressive.

Germany is the hegemon of Europe

The German problem! Germany is doomed to dominate any European structure it's a part of (through a combination of population size, work ethic and technological know how) and the rest of Europe is going to resent that.

The EU has not found a way around that beyond trying to pretend it's not a problem.

Germany is an extremely praiseworthy country in many ways but... it's not a team player and the EU ends up being something like the Luxembourg national soccer team but with Messi.... he can't raise the rest of the team and ends up looking like a hot dog (and the other players don't like being outshone either).

PO played dirty and then PiS instead of just correcting it played even dirtier.

"When you go low, I go high" has never been said by any member of PiS (or by any of their voters). So of course they couldn't wait a few days and swear in the judges that had lawfully been appointed and chosen two of their own - it had to be war against their enemies (which includes about half of Polish citizens) all the time.

It's bezinteresowne chamstwo all the way down.

Salvini didn't break, but there's no denying that it hurt him

Which just guarantees that the next one will be more radical.... pushing more or less moderate populists out of the public space just creates less moderate ones.

But yeah, Adrian does not impress me with his sang-froid.... constant needling will drive him away from public events...

And "President of some of the Poles" doesn't have that same ring.... but he was elected when PiS was pretending to have reformed itself into a more or less normal Christian Democrat party... now the luster is off and it's neo-PRL patronage and party connections all the way and he's tied himself to that.

He hasn't broken character yet... but how much of this kind of thing can he take?

Food / Which foods are generally disliked/unpopular in Poland? Which non-Polish foods are slowly gaining popularity? [180]

- I heard golumbki (aka gołąbki) are essentially greek dolmas -

originally turkish... or even further east...

in Bulgaria i've mainly had vegetarian versions which are a little blander...

in romania they make it with pickled cabbage (the pickle whole cabbage leaves or even whole cabbages) to mimic the tart taste of grape leaves... in Hungary they bake it with sauerkraut for the same reason... (and they're much bigger than gołąbki...)

by the time you get all the way up to poland the tartness has disappeared

Similarly I think traditional village kotlet mielony (which are small) are probably a northern version of Turkish kofta.

Travel / Why do you visit Poland? [223]

Are there any historical sites or museums I should visit near Płock?

Go to Płock! One of my favorite places in Poland! Great views of the Wisła (Vistula) lots of interesting old PRL architecture (last time I was there) and...

I'm not religious but Płock is the site of a couple of the more uplifting and bizarre manifestations of Polish catholicism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries....

One branch of my favorite heretical strain of Roman Catholicism is in Płock! The Marjawici (Mariavites).

Now there are two branches, the one close to the river has an interesting church built in a very non-Polish style, there's little difference between them and mainstream RC nowadays but still interesting especially if

The more interesting (and radical) branch is neaby in the countryside in Felicjanów. They had female priests, married priests, didn't take collections (the church should support itself and not leech off the population). They were all ex-communicated (possibly after a RC mole wrote a series of sensationalized articles on them).

Płock is also where Jesus appeared to St. Faustyna

News / Why is Poland so hostile against Germany? Do they realize how their reparations rubbish damages relations? [510]

The € is an elitist project from elitists for elitists.

Very true, it's a pseudo currency that helps the financial sector (which would gladly enslave you and me) It doesn't matter what it was designed as that's what it has become and half of Europe will be mired in poverty until it's fixed or eliminated.

We Germans are trapped in a system that exploits us and to exploit others.

Yes, the first step is to help Greece and/or Italy out of the Euro and to stop treating southern Europe as a cheap laborer farm.

And... maybe not cackling about Greek pensioners starving to death as an expression of how Great Germany is...

I'd say it's combination of self-loathing and a lack of intellectual curiousity..... close?

little to no interest. Its our poor, little backwarded, sometimes annoying neighbor

Germany is a nouveau rich country, only interested in the outward trappings of posterity... which is why it's not producing any worthwhile art now.

Bye centuries of intellectual and artistis achievement, es gibt Geld zu verdienen!

Life / Why oh Why do Poles drive so incredibly poorly [109]

f life in general in Polish cities is more frantic and people are pushier and more aggressive

In cross cultural terms, Ireland is pretty low on the "Uncertainty avoidance" scale and Poland is very high*.

This manifests itself (among other ways) in greater stress in everyday life in Poland (actually not bad for mental health some level of stress keeps the mind sharp) and occasionally aggressive behavior. It also generally correlates with worse driving... as drivers feel greater subjective levels of stress.

lower uncertainty avoidance cultures tend to be kind of boring and lethargic and the people in them constantly use caffeine carriers (like tea or coffee) to try to goose their nervous systems into action, the lower level of stress also correlates with people spending more time in their own heads and higher levels of mental illness.
