Language / Cultural disparities shown through Polish and English languages [195]

Try pushing boundaries of Polish grammar on Twitter

examples?

the huge number of English terms and phrases without unique counterparts

(Almost?) all European languages have outsourced most of their word creation abilities to English. This is not a very good situation but it's hardly unique to Polish, I find modern Italian newspapers (for instance) almost unreadable because all of the poorly integrated English vocabulary (mostly used in ways they're not in English).

pay money to lowlife like that 'Roosh'

latest is he's gone all religious and has renounced the whole "pick up artist" scene, this was apparently partly a secondary result of massive emotional trauma at the death of a family member but he'd been growing disenchanted for a long time long term promiscuity is not a path to happiness for anyone, male or female...

rightards have always been so happy to kill their political opponents

the groups he wants to kill.... don't really exist.....

Why is it so? Are they like rabid dogs?

the desire to inflict violence on others comes first, then the political justification.... this is true no matter what political or religious justification they end up using as a smokescreen....

Nowhere else in politics do young people have the chance to make such a fast and spectacular career.

Kind of like the PRL.... get in the party and make connections to get ahead....

I spend most of my working life around educated young people (early to mid 20s) and they are mostly (by large margins) indifferent to or actively hostile to most party positions of PiS.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

textbooks for pre-school kids adapt to new circumstances

This has to be satire.... so much bad information....

"Kalim" doesn't much look like he's from Congo and Abdul is not usually a first name...

How are 'wojna' and 'walka' supposed to be different?

And how many orthodox Jews would marry (presumably non-orthodox Polish women?) Orthodox Jews are notoriously clannish (outdone in the industrial world maybe only by Jains...)

This excerpt is really dumb and I feel sorry for any kid who's misled by it...

Polish young people are alienated from the political process in Poland and they are fully conscious of the fact that no party cares about them.

Old people will vote in masse.

If no state of emergency is declared (and even if one is I don't trust PiS to respect the constitution - why would they start now?) it will be a massive PiS victory.

If a state of emergency is declared and PiS decides to follow the constitution then things are open because by the time the elections take place there will have been a chance to debate the systematic neglect of healthcare which PiS did nothing to change for 5 years....

they are not legally obliged to do so

It's my understanding that if they declare stan nadzwyczajny (a broader category that includes 'stan wyjątkowy') then the election has to be postponed as the constitution says:

"W czasie stanu nadzwyczajnego oraz w ciągu 90 dni po jego zakończeniu .... nie mogą być przeprowadzane ... wybory Prezydenta Rzeczypospolitej"

Of course PiS thinks of the constitution as toilet paper so it will be interesting to see if they purposefully avoid declaring a state of emergency for the sake of the elections (as happened in Iran) or try to justify not postponing the elections in clear violation of the constitution....

Food / Which foods are generally disliked/unpopular in Poland? Which non-Polish foods are slowly gaining popularity? [180]

Do you like venison?

I've had it a time or two in the US (cousins in the country who hunted).... it pretty much tasted like lean beef.... buffalo also tasted like beef....

I miss nutria... there used to be a store that sold nutria thighs just around the corner but the building was torn down to build apartments... there are a couple of places in town that have it but they're not close.

Nutria tastes a bit like very light, lean beef (imagine beef as a light meat...) very tender.

Language / Sentence usage/placements of unstressed vs stressed pronouns Się/Siebie, Mi/Mię, Cię/Ci, Go/Jego, Mu/Jemu, [19]

also try not to place "Się" in last-word position in sentences..

In modern Polish that particular rule is frequently violated and I often hear unaccented się at the end of sentences.

My own idea is that there in the modern language there are at least two (maybe three) different się's that differ in distribution and potential for emphasis.

It's important to remember that often się has no inherent meaning but is used to make transitive verb roots intransitive

zmienić - to change (something) transitive verb with an object

zmienić się - to change (no object) "Zmieniłeś się" (you've changed)

men from abroad want to tell us Poles

Plastic Poles don't care about Poland at all except as a fantasy object - they hate it when reality doesn't match the fantasy... the usual response is to double down on empty slogans...

I do not understand the Polish attitude to lamb and mutton

Maybe they don't like the aftertaste... I disliked lamb as a child for that reason, it wasn't an everyday or even every week kind of food so there was no way to acclimate to it. I like it occasionally now, but... meh... too expensive here to make it a staple...

A colleague (muslim but not very observant) said the same thing about pork - they avoid it less for religious reasons and more for the aftertaste that they never became accustomed to... (and which I never noticed since I've eaten it since childhood).

Is there difference in meaning between "Widzę jego" ("I see him") and "Jego widzę"?

In rough terms....

Widzę jego. "I see _him_"

Jego widzę "I _see_ him"

Polish word order is traditionally described as being more about theme and rheme than subject verb object

theme = older, known information

rheme = newer information

This is similar to topic and comment

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topic_and_comment

Modern usage is trending toward a stricter subject - verb - object order (subject to other constraints) especially in speech.

Language / Stenka and stęka - on alleged non-existence of nasal vowels in spoke Polish [17]

'prosze', 'kawE'

word final -ę is pronounced just like -e by most speakers most of the time

eople who pronounce them the same are simply careless about diction

That's almost everybody... it's impossible for a very large majority of native speakers to be 'careless' about diction.
