History / Why did Hitler call Poles Half Jews? [98]

Native American admixture among so-termed "regular" Caucasian US citizens is quite common!

Nothing to do with Europe.

Judy Dench has a Celtic cast to her face, is not the same thing as suggesting a hint of Asiatic influence, is it?

No, it isn't, but she has no hint of "Asiatic influence " in her face at all!!

Are you OK Lyzko?

She is Yorkshire born, but looking at her face I saw something Celtic..... maybe her cheeks......
I googled her and her mum was Irish.......

True, but they don't play as hard.
Never underestimate the physicality of what we call football and you call soccer.
It used to be even tougher in my days when we played with a leather ball...... that smarts! :-)

Does olive skin come from Asia really?

Not at all.It is a European trait.Asians are brown.

As much as you despise us

Anthead does not despise us.He is of Polish descent.

You can see the Mongol genes in Hungarians, but not in Poles.

Yet that insanity resonated with masses of disenfranchised Germans

True.

making the Germans even more suspicious of Communism!

And which they were proven right to be.

Yes, so I don't know why Hitler would have said what the OP suggested.
But you never know, he was bonkers after all......

Hitler described poles as 'half-jews'

I have never heard that and a quick Google didn't bring anything up either.
Certainly, Poland was perhaps one of the earliest multi cultural societies in the world and welcomed oppressed Jews from all over Europe.
But except in the higher levels of society, Poles and Jews did not mix that much.

So I went hunting on one of these chat sites

You are a nutter.
You married your wife and vowed to stick by her and support her.
So stick to your vows, you wimp!

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

I think I am, perhaps people don't choose to understand me.
As for Doug, he is perfectly capable of defending himself.
I don't for one minute believe that a left leaning person like Doug would want to make people homeless.
And neither would a right leaning guy like me.

Don`t be silly again, we only reject the revolutionary way of dealing with it proposed by Dougpol and supported by you.

Off you go again!
You just can't help it, can you?
I don't think I or Doug were proposing anything "revolutionary", just that the problem needed to be addressed.
I think you may have a problem comprehending the tone of British speech.
Which, in your defence, can sometimes be a little "bombastic".

Genealogy / Which Polish first names are considered unpopular / obsolete in Poland? [124]

One of my cousins is a Danuta, and yeah, she is over 50.
But Denise in English is out of fashion too.
However, as Kaprys said in an earlier post, some of these old names are coming back.
It is a constant roundabout, but some names never get back onto it.

There are some whole towns made iup of decrepit kamienicy

It is funny, this thread started out with people defending, or in denial of the fact that Poland has many homes that are frankly, not fit for purpose.

And it has gradually switched to an acceptance of a problem.
Sure, it won't be cured overnight but Poles need to admit that there is a problem.
Without that admittance, nothing will ever be done to cure the problem.

I personally find British architecture completely impractical

Only the new builds.
They are terrible.
Houses built in the twenties and thirties are perfect.
Who needs a cellar when you have a fridge?

Some people will always prefer to live in apartment blocksm though

I am sure you are right, but I can't for the life of me understand why.

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

I am not suggesting that Poland is backward.
I am well aware of how many people in Western Europe live in flats.
My point is that it is not good, not healthy and not desirable.
Poland is a huge country for only 38 million people.
Time to get building houses.

Of course the construction was shabby and done on the cheap

Which just continues the low expectations.
To achieve anything in life, you need to set your goals high.
Build the houses first, then demolish the concrete jungles.
The money is there if you want it.

The fact is that the majority of Polish people in cities around Poland live in those blocks

That is true.
And I think it is a terrible shame.
People need houses, with gardens front and rear, driveways and a garage.
Poland has plenty of space for the size of the population.
Time to get building, get people off these nasty estates and give them a feelgood factor.

, it should be mentioned that many of those old housing estates have been modernised with EU funds.

And they are still horrible places to live.
We have similar estates in The UK, but I think that the Polish ones are still a touch worse.

that guy who visited you with two pounds in 1960 didn`t live in the slums

But he did.
He lived in those godawful Communist slums, many of which, to Poland's shame, exist to this day.
You know the ones, where the caretaker controls the heating....
