News / 11th November Independence Day in Poland [73]

Poland by the Sarmatism would have monument to Gavrilo

Poland does not erect monuments to filfthy assassins... like the filthy assassin Princip (spit on his name). Only a country of violent, primitive brutes would idolize such a filthy assassin.

Life / Polish Ice Hockey [17]

despite being a big hockey fan, I've never actually seen a game in Poland

A couple of things... Poland's never been that big on winter sports (definitely more of a summer olympic type of place) and Polish fans are usually more into sports when there are successful Polish competitors (like sky jumping - Adam Małysz more or less made that popular even though it's a winter sport).

Also.... hockey is more expensive to train (ice rinks and ice time aren't cheap) so it's at a disadvantage with other sports...

Back in the PRL Poland was sort of the weak man out in athletics compared to other Warsaw Pact countries... I often wonder how much the church (as an outlet for societal unhappiness) contributed to that. Certainly party bosses were a tad more.... constrained in what they could spend money on (while East Germans or Romanians who weren't happy about vast sums poured into sports, or anything else, had no real outlet).

News / Poles say a big YES to our European Union [996]

Whatever Polish people think or don't think about the EU (or the Polo-Hungarian alliance) the EU has it's own problems...

Massive amounts of Italian debt are going to mature at the end of the year and Italy has no slightest hope of repaying it (even before the economic devastation created by misguided reactions to covid).

Either the rules change or the whole euro idea collapses....

Life / Are the Polish Police Gutless? [21]

- Police with no numbers, plain clothes police using batons

Jarek's recreating the PRL again.... that's all he's ever been about.

same as PiS want to do to ZOMO members

PiS has no intention whatsoever of doing anything like that.... it's a vote getter for those (mostly outside of Poland) who still bear a grudge...

Babcia always made the biggest ham she could find for Christmas Eve dinner

So... was she a heathen? Polish Christmas Eve dinner is supposed to be lenten, which means no meat, no eggs (beyond what's need to fry fish) and no dairy (relaxed in recent years with dishes like herring in cream becoming popular).

you are is an opinioned moro

Flattery will get you nowhere!

I let you talk BS for few weeks

And don't think I don't appreciate it!

cam to your senses and see yourself for what you really are

A reasonable guy who prefers moderate policies rather than radical weirdo policies.... Did you see Borgen? The middle is where you get things done, the fringe is for futile games of purity.

Kind of 'they brought it on themselves etc.

To be fair, some abortion rights supporters can be pretty cringe.... what kind of sick person hops in time to music to get an abortion?

twitter.com/PrisonPlanet/status/1328872375404949504

I'm firmly pro-choice (which includes the idea that some women will make bad choices) but I'm also in the "safe, legal and as rare as possible" camp...

Will Poland become second Ireland?????

Probably... RC (and misguided supporters) never learn. Most Polish people aren't interested in enshrining catholic dogma into civil law... The best thing any Polish government can do for the church is to limit its activities...

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

The Irish monks invented whiskey,.... from 'usice' , 'uisce beatha' - the water of life as the monks named it.

which is where the name for Aquavit (sometimes rendered Okowita in Polish) comes from.

I happened to see a bit of documentary about the rise and fall and slow rebuilding of Irish whiskey... short story: the Irish invented it but the Scots were able to scale up production in a way that Ireland (with small batch fermentation) couldn't and so Irish whiskey went from world leader to niche product very quickly..

Personally I'm not crazy about most whisky (Scotch usually reminds me of what I imagine battery acid tastes like). I do like American bourbon (made from corn mash) though.

When you exclude the truth out of principle.... all you're left with is false narratives that you cling to harder and harder....

The same is true of the d*ck-in-a-dress* trans crazies who have managed to turn feminism in some countries inside out (so it turns into women taking care of biological mens' emotional needs and sexual desire**) yeah a TERG (trans-excluding reasonable guy). Hopefully needless to say I have nothing against more.... normal trans people who just want to live their lives as well as they can but I detest the psyho-freaks like Jonathan (Jessica) Yaniv who need psychiatric care and not a platform.

*is the term "c()ck in a frock" taken to describe these goons? If not I'd like to copyright it....

**aka the cotton ceiling

So the anti-abortion nuts have to imagine a world where slutty women slut it up and dance into and out of the abortion clinic...

the universal global rule of women - they will abolish all wars and conflicts

You've obviously never spent time around women in a work environment... (or paid much attention to real female national leaders).

Women are human beings with the range of virtues and flaws as men (the distribution differs a bit but the same material is there).

Life / To Poles: some food for thought [31]

emigration, wars, risings, expulsions, deportations.

Humanity has developed defenses against those events (which have happened everywhere). Genetic variation (meaning talent appears unpredictably in the population and not concentrated in a few lineages) and reversion to the mean (extraordinary people usually have ..... ordinary children).

Loss of physical intellectual infrastructure (libraries, universities etc) is much more damaging to societies than loss of outstanding individual people.

The problem with abortion is that almost no one is consistent.

At one end, completely free completely unrestricted no-questions asked and no stigma abortion rights - hardly anyone wants that...

At the other, 100% no abortion even if the fetus isn't viable and/or the woman's life is in danger if she carries it to term - almost no one wants that*....

Almost all people are in the middle somehwere (closer to one end or another but not at the weirdo fringe extremes).

*to be completely consistent you have to support the process that denied an abortion to Savita Halappanavar and support her death (not be happy about it but think it was the right outcome). You also have to want to imprison women who get abortions.

Probably up to 12 weeks for anyone, up to 19 week for disabilities.

Close to my position, early on few if any restrictions with restrictions kicking in around the time of natural viability... but at any time for the health of the mother (and in tough cases of severe disability the mother should be the one to make the decision whether to abort or carry to term).

Life / So if Poland is apparently "97% Polish" according to official statistics, what is the other 3%? [68]

Bulgarian shows some common features with all Slavic languages

IIRC a linguist in the 1960s did a village to village survey from Serbia to Bulgaria and couldn't find a clear border where one turned into the other... that might be different now in an age of mass media...

It's my understanding that Bulgarian disappeared from the written record as a living evolving language (preserved as a fossilized Old Church Slavic) for several hundred years and by the time it re-appeared it had acquired its current form which is heavily Balkan (with a bit of Turkish with evidentiality, which is not as clearly marked in any other European language that I know of).

What country did you come from, did you have the same problems?

I'm as American as sweet potato casserole (aka food of the gods)... so no.

I do live in a major city so that might have something to do with the difference in service....

all I have done is describe the Polish shopping experience

Of 25-30 years ago.... things have gotten so much better on that front in recent years... I can't remember the last overtly rude store employee I dealt with (and you used to be able to pick up new nasty store employees stories on a weekly or daily basis)

Maybe things are still not that nice among the jumacze close to Deutschland.....

I am claiming that being for abortion in any form and being a Christian cannot be reconciled

Okay, I'll bite... what authority do you have to speak for every Christian denomination? How did you become an authority for determining who is and isn't a Christian?
