Travel / Looking for a new long-term stay in Poland [18]

Maybe between Toruń and wloclawek ? Loads of forest, two interesting towns and a reasonable connection to Warsaw.

Or the area about 100km North of Warsaw - starting at Ciechanow and up to dzialdowo and Ilawa. Very forested, new highway and fast train to Warsaw and Gdańsk

Maybe in the West of Poland in Gorzow, Zielona Gora area ?

Lots of forests, will be gyms and modern shops and within reach of Berlin or Poznan. Plus cheap to live.

It's not just Karens who want your dog on a leash - its also to protect wildlife

News / Coronavirus in Poland - part 2 [599]

They did in Poland and it was circa 1000 people under 50 with no pre- existing conditions.

Tbf since vaccination it is less than 100 I think.

You forgot to mention seat belts, always the ne plus ultra argument for the nanny statists

For a healthy person under 40 the risks of a car accident were far higher than the risks from covid.

In Poland people were fired e.g in pharmacies for not being vaccinated. You can Google that. Isolated cases maybe but still raise significant ethical issues, especially for under 40s with tiny risks

Might be sensible, but don't pretend it never happened

Food / Poland-Tea or coffee land? [131]

The one I visited was an old costa and they just painted the interior black. Extremely un inviting.

There is a gap in the market for someone that can do coffee fast and cheap

I always assumed they were Polish - but now see they are in Kazakhstan, Armenia and probably some other parts of the former UNNR.

I tried them because I think the awful Sbux and Costa need competition, but Cofix were just as bad. In fact the cake I bought there is one of the worst things I ever ate.

Was bad luck to enter in 2020 - with lockdown and then war.

There have been millions of cases of covid in Poland despite vaccination. I also had twice since my third vaccine.

Work / What Jobs Pay At Least 25,000/per month in Poland [5]

What you are quoting - 72k Euro per year isn't just high for Poland, but for Europe in general. The average salary in both Paris and London is circa 55k euro.

American salaries have pulled away considerably from European salaries in the last 10 years. Lots of reasons for that but you would be lucky to get a 25k zloty salary in Warsaw working for someone else. As GK says above you are best off in an in demand tradesmen's job, though of course that is hard work

Life / West-East life in Poland? [45]

Can't agree with you - arriving at Lichtenberg late at night with baggage is tiresome on public transport and expensive in a cab. A guaranteed bad start to the trip.

If the train got me to the town Centre, on time then I would use it. But it's got a case of long covid.

The train has been very dodgy for a few years since about 2019 - often late, sometimes stopping far from central Berlin. Seems to be getting better now though.

Yes - the full stretch from Konin to Slubice is now about 130 zloty. They put the price up every 3 months

Needs a monopoly investigation but Uokik spend all their time arguing with Biedronka and Lidl

I'm not a DT - very rare for me to hold a stock less than 2 years. Taxes and fees are high in Poland on stock trading.

Thanks JR - I am reviewing my stocks next at quarter end. Will take a look. Problem is my wife gave me only one rule for investing our money - she has to have heard of the company, and 50 percent of our stocks must be things we use (apple, visa, orlen, nestle etc).

She does agree to a handful of midcaps though!

Work / 9000 gross salary in Warsaw? [18]

Good luck with the job - I think you will do fine on that money and get back on your feet. Might be possible to push that rent down a bit by negotiating - there are quite a lot of empty apartments and wannabe landlords in Warsaw right now.

Correct but a healthy supply of private capital through the stock market is certainly positive for the country.

All parties have used boards of state owned companies to support their Partitocrazia - problem is that under PiS it went crazy, lots of appointees had literally zero business or management experience and were not just party loyalists but rather fanatics.

PO has swept them away efficiently but the new appointments are not always great, and of course the first job they have it to clear up 8 years of mess.

But yes logically there should be some opportunities for growth in the Polish stock market as I feel quite optimistic about the economy in general.

Yes - one way of looking at it. I basically stopped investing on the Polish market in 2015 when they started using all the profits as a piggy bank for PiS voters !

Well in that time the Polish stock market has moved 15 percent - blame it on Covid, PiS, Putin or whatever it's not been an easy time in this region. So that gain isn't great but no catastrophe.

If you have some spare cash you could always stick it on the US stock market or on a mix of German/french
