Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1428]

My mum used to make sauerkraut at home in jars - hands only. But it's too much fuss as it's available pretty much everywhere here.

The thing about sauerkraut is that it's supposed to survive the wintertime - made in summer it was a source of vitamins for long winters. Now it's also known that it's a great source of probiotics. So theoretically, it doesn't need freezing but I guess it depends on the way it is made and stored.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

Actually I remember watching Sprawa dla reportera once and one of the problems they discussed was of a young Gypsy woman's and one of the guests was Bogdan Trojanek -that blonde Gypsy. And I'm pretty sure at some point he told her 'cyganisz'.

Life / Do you know these characters from Polish movies? [223]

@pawian
You don't know if it's crazy or not if you haven't seen it. :) I haven't seen the latest part but the first two are great.

Ok, another riddle. What's his most famous line in this old tv series I might have seen an episode or two, really.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1428]

@johnny reb
Just as much cholesterol as in an egg added to make them. Do flour, starch or potatoes have so much cholesterol?

@pawian
Believe me, they don't need to be rubbery. It's the way you make them.

BTW, I prefer when they're smaller. I actually prefer pyzy.
As for the difference between them and pyzy, roughly speaking, they're made with cooked potatoes while pyzy are mostly made with raw potatoes -I'm not sure as I have never made the latter but I think I remember grandma and mum add some cooked potatoes to pyzy as well.

Genealogy / How can I find my family in Poland? (Hochajzel) Malinowska. [15]

Nowak is the most popular surname in Poland. Malinowski/a is less popular but still there are roughly 50 thousand users. We don't know if that was her maiden or married name, we don't know what religion she was.

Try Facebook and pages like spotted. Write a post there. It'll reach more people.

Genealogy / Motyl - Tracing My Polish Roots for the 1st time [28]

@Ntc
You need to start with getting your grandma's birth certificate and her parents' marriage certificate. They're less than a hundred years old so they should be at the civil register office but Lwów is no longer Polish. I have no ancestors there (not to my knowledge) so no experience either. According to uncle google, the civil registers from former eastern territories are held in Warsaw śródmieście

I just can't find their email address. Perhaps someone else will help.
There's also geneteka search engine but it usually gives info on older records.
Is there a chance these weren't their real names? Why wasn't your 15 year old grandma taken to Syberia with her parents? Have you contacted the red cross or the Arolsen archives about her stay in Germany?

It might be a diffiicult search but good luck.

History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

[moved from]

@Rich Mazur
Since as a result of the war, Poland was overtaken by stalinists and a great number of UB and SB members were of Jewish origin, it's ridiculous to say that Poland is indebted to Germany for killing Jews. Not only were millions (both ethnic Poles and Polish Jews) killed but the political powers of Europe were changed for decades.

History / Do Polish people in general dislike Russia or Germany more? [369]

Poland is not indebted to Germany for killing roughly 20% of our population, destroying cities, towns and villages or enslaving millions.

Reading about it on the anniversary of the German attack on Poland. ...

Language / Harmless old-fashioned Polish swear words/phrases [159]

I don't think 'psiakrew bydło' has ever been a collocation. I have never heard it, except from Lyzko.
IMO, it might have been 'Psiakrew, bydło!' used on a single occasion like in 'co za bydło! ' etc.
Where did you get it, Lyzko?

Genealogy / Birth in Lviv in 1926: Polish or Ukrainian nationality? [29]

And before Lemberg it was Lwów and before that ..

As for being born in Austria, it's because it must have been before 1918 so under the Austrian partition (Habsburgs or whatever), then it was Polish until the difficult times of WW2.

Life / Do you know these characters from Polish movies? [223]

Giuseppe w Warszawie - another film with Cybulski, not pictured here, though.

He's Italian. She 'finds' him in Warsaw and takes her to her and her brother's flat. If I really well, to avoid suspicion from Germans.
