History / What do Poles owe to Jews? [593]

> El negrito Bambo vive en Africa

"Murzynek Bambo"! ;D

I am not going to answer this highly provocative question.

Why "provocative"?? :)

Goodnight! :):):)

Goodnight, sleep tight :)))

History / What do Poles owe to Jews? [593]

Oh, one film by Agnieszka Holland I suppose I could also recommend - but this time for foreigners interested in Polish history (I haven't seen in "In Darkness" yet) - is "To Kill a Priest" with globally known (lol) actors: Christopher Lambert, Ed Harris, Tim Roth, Timothy Spall, Pete Postlethwaite, Joss Ackland and David Suchet. The story is based on the murder of priest Jerzy Popiełuszko by agents of the Polish communist internal intelligence agency:

youtu.be/E9rm6D3lB5Q

Yes, their poems have been translated in to several languages.

Which languages?

Come on, girls, don`t tell me you don`t realise such basic things. :):):)

OK, OK :)

All right then, what about Bronisław Geremek?

Locally, because they are only known in Poland.

Yes! Very good. She is known globally.

Why do they have to be known globally?
Come on, are Tuwim, Leśmian and Brzechwa known globally? ;)) And yet you've included them in the thread.

But the thread is what do Poles owe to Jews not what do world owe to Polish Jews.

Indeed :)

we certainly can`t classify them as worthy of being put in this thread

Is Agnieszka Holland worthy enough? ;)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnieszka_Holland

"Agnieszka Holland was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1948. She is the daughter of two prominent journalists, Irena (née Rybczyńska) and Henryk Holland,[1] a Catholic mother and a Jewish father. Holland herself was raised without religion. Her father's parents were killed in the ghetto; her mother participated in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising and was a member of the Polish Underground."

Some of her films:

In Darkness (2011) (Academy Award nominee for the best foreign language film)
Washington Square (1997)
Total Eclipse (1995)
The Secret Garden (1993) (Nominated for BAFTA Film Award)
Europa, Europa (1990, Academy Award nominee for the best screenplay)
To Kill a Priest (1988)
Angry Harvest (Bittere Ernte, 1985, Germany, Academy Award nominee for the best foreign language film)

"The Secret Garden" - I loved that film! :)

youtu.be/KJCvbFLtRB0

The whole world is a garden :)

"Europa, Europa"

OK, the title of the new thread should be: Contemporary, locally known Poles with Jewish roots.

What do you mean by "locally"?

I think that came to Poland from Turkey.

I thought about this too.

Btw, yehudi, is challah eaten only on Sabbath and holidays or also as daily bread?

cebularz - [tse-boo-lahsh] m. tart or pie topped with onion;

Funny, I've never heard of cebularz although my voivodeship is next to lubelskie!
The only thing that comes to my mind as looking similar to cebularz is "bułka z pieczarkami" sold in "Pod Telegrafem": podtelegrafem.pl/pl/wyroby/garmazeria/przekaski/

It's a bread roll with champignons, onion and cheese.
But I doubt it's anything regional.

Halva is popular all over Eastern Europe

Yes, I know they have it in Russia!
Btw, is it known in the West?

Peace? We don`t need any peace bringing. We are peaceful people. :"):):):)

If you say so :))))

I bought a big lump of chałwa last week and today I am looking at it and it has become so tiny!! :):):)

My mum has a similar problem, so she buys it rarely :)) I, on the other hand, will eat a few bites and it's enough for me ;) It has an intense, peculiar bitter-sweet taste :)

I've just learnt that Morozowski is Jewish!

And Marcin Meller, Bronisław Wildstein. Also Kazimiera Szczuka has Jewish roots. (I didn't know about Meller and Szczuka, I just googled them a minute ago ;)).

Would you also describe them as Poles?

lol
No, jon357, we would describe them as Martians ;D

Would you ask the same question about Piotr Gąsowski, Michał Figurski (Russian roots), Grzegorz Miecugow (Armenian-Georgian roots) or Robert Makłowicz (Armenian-Ukrainian-Hungarian-Austrian roots lol)?

A dish we owe to Jews is "karp po żydowsku" (gefilte fish):

Pawian, yehudi, I shall bring peace between you two and mention something we rather for sure owe to Jews ;) - it's "chałka" (known in English as "challah"):

You can buy it in probably every bakery or store and I personally love it - it's soft, fluffy and sweet :D Mmmm...

Btw, what about halva ("chałwa" in Polish)? How did it end up in Poland? My mum loves it!

News / Incredible news from Poland - The president shaved his moustache! [88]

But in 21 century it is time to mature. Don`t you agree? :):):)

Just like Wałęsa said: "Jestem za, a nawet przeciw" :))
And on a more serious note:

I think some compromise should be achieved to retain Kraków's atmosphere...

Let`s see how it develops.

Yes, we'll see... I don't mind changes, I just think they should be well thought out.
For example, I don't really like the Disney-like colour of the renovated railway station in Wrocław:

It hurts my eyes ;/

Polish President shaved his moustache!

I saw the president today on TV giving some interview and I can't get used to it! I just can't lol He looked better with mustache in my opinion...

Love / Do you think these renowned Poles are hot? [150]

He's inteligent,funny and charming.

That's true, he's generally liked, I think. Also, he's the second most trusted politician in Poland, after the president (!) according to CBOS poll:

So I'd say it could be 50/50 - 50% his personality and 50% "the power, money and opportunities" as far as this woman is concerned.

Actually, I see that the reactions in comments are mixed...

And I must admit I understand why... It may sound surprising but I somehow prefer the picture on the left:

Of course, the buildings should be renovated, but the place on the left looks climatic, and the one on the right looks just like any European city... It reminds me of Vienna. My impression of that city could fit in three words - clean, whitish and... boring... It's a nice city, beautiful architecture but I preffered Paris, despite it was... I don't know... more "dirty" I guess lol But interesting and alive at the same time...

Of course it depends on personal tastes but I think some compromise should be achieved to retain Kraków's atmosphere...

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [676]

we as poles are eastern european. You guys are idiots, people arent just looking at the actual geographical location of the country, its the culture language and bloodline. Poles, Russians, Serbs etc. are a slavic people, its easier to just call us all eastern european.

It's easier, of course, but not correct :)
Berni23, why don't you use your username, huh? :)

We dont call Serbs south europeans do we?

No, neither do we call them Eastern Europeans :) We just call them Serbs and the region where they live we call the Balkans (not Eastern Europe).

So chill the **** out heros, being called eastern european isnt bad, its what we are.

It's not bad, but it isn't correct either :) So you chill and stop "przeżywać" so much that Poles are Central European o_O :)

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [676]

yes, I'm Polish

And where do you live?

and i don't really mind being called east european.

So? That's your business. Do you mind Poles considering themselves Central European?

if someone says Poland is an eastern european country they most probably mean 1 of the geopolitical divisons of Europe.

That geopolitical divison of Europe is overdue.

The point is that very many Polish people find it derogatory to be called eastern european...

Many people find it ignorant when someone doesn't know geography.

inferiority complex as i said.

Berni23?? :)))

You mean the facebook generation worrying about privacy? ;)

Dunno, I'd ask for permition - that's the right thing to do, facebook or no facebook. Especially if I was going to show them on a forum like this one (and I wouldn't do that, to be honest).

Now, something for the boys:

Joanna Much

Joanna Mucha:

mucha in Poland

Hot or not?

Something in him repulses me.

Yeah, me too. But he reminds me of Piękny Marian instead (I didn't like that guy) lol

How about 20 years ago?

LOL What is that?? ;D
I can't clearly see his face in that picture ;)
Besides, I don't think it's about age.

Well, he's not my type either, but objectively speaking that's considered hot, I think :)
And he probably looked better when he was younger ;)

And come on, Rutkowski, really? xD:

rutkowski

Nowak may look a bit like a Southern type gigolo, but Rutkowski? ;)

You certainly need to get more education on the matter! :):):):)

Pawian, I know which men I consider hot and which I don't - I don't need an article to tell me this ;)
Are we really going to discuss such things in this thread? ;) Of course, some women are turned on by power alone. But Donald isn't hot, Putin isn't hot and Hitler definitely wasn't hot either.

Slawomir Nowak

nowak1

nowak2

Now, that's hot lol
I honestly didn't know what's hidden under that suit... ;]
But I don't like his face although it's handsome.

Never knew him before. I must admit his an eye cookie on this cover

I spotted him during Euro 2012 :] What a shame that Russian team had to go home so early... *sighs* lol

The sweetest one is English. Cute doll face, just perfect :)

Yes, she's pretty, but there's something gentle and nice in the eyes of the Polish "average". I also like French one and Italian, for the same reason, probably ;)

Genealogy / Polish looks? [1410]

Who do you find the most attractive out of men?

I generally like men with dark hair and dark eyes :) But I can fall for a blue eyed blond man too lol There was a time when I had a crush on Brad Pitt, for example ;D Johnny Depp doesn't do anything for me despite the fact that in theory his "my type".

But Eric Bana does after "Troy", mainly because of the character he played :) So it depends on the role, as far as I've noticed.

It's the same in real life - it depends on the individual character, really, not nationality...
And I like when a man looks like a man - has some muscles, but this also doesn't depend on nationality, I suppose...

I, myself, have strangely discovered that I like the average Pole the most - he was a perfect mix of masculinity and softness.

I immediately thought of Aleksandr Kerzhakov, when I read this! ;D

Look at those eyes, OMG...

the average Polish woman looked very plain comparing to other averages ;)

But sweet! ;)

Genealogy / Polish looks? [1410]

I think this might be helpful: It's the average male and female face of many countries from around the world. I am not sure if age has been taken into account. See if you can spot any differences between the average Polish and others: )

Of course I can spot differences - all of those are different faces :))
But you're right - there is something Polish about them (especially about the woman). Also Russian woman is spot on, I think. Russian man - I don't know... Not necessarily... Maybe Ukrainian? The average English man does look English! (or British) And the Irish woman! I'm not sure what's Irish about the man, though, but it's not like I've seen many Irish people, I guess :)

On the other hand, I'm going in my head through all the Polish faces of people I've known and know and I can't really recall anyone who would look similar to that "average Polish woman"... Except for this actress (but I don't know her personally, of course :)):

I was writing before about sitting with my female friends at a restaurant and how our hair and eye colour differed. But it wasn't only that - we also had completely different facial features. One of us could be considered Italian, for example, the second one Irish maybe, third one, let's say, Dutch, and me... I don't know... Jewish, maybe? lol I doubt you'd guess we're Polish. There are so many different facial features - it's pretty amazing! Also among Polish men. I think the same applies to other nationalities.

we got em here too lol

We still have them in Poland too - I guess not all of them have been exported abroad xD

I also can't believe you actually are having a conversation about how Polish women walk and how is that different from others.

They're men... lol At least it's less ridiculous than discussing how pointy Polish heads are ;D

I'm also Polish, so yes, I can confirm the tail part, but my family didn't eat lots of cabbage and gherkins, therefore my skin is not properly green :( But you know, be cool and don't give out the secrets, k?

Haha... xD Sometimes I even like this forum! lol

Language / Fun with Polish ambiguous language [59]

@ Pawian..........no I'm quite sure he said ćmok (i've never heard of ćwok before) :)

Because that's one of the meanings :):
sjp.pl/%E6mok
pl.wiktionary.org/wiki/%C4%87mok
Here its says: "(1.1) *gw. lwow. cham"
*gwara lwowska

But I know this from the dictionary, I've never heard it used like that. Must be regional, as Poles in general usually say "ćwok":

sjp.pl/%E6wok
